One of my favorite arguments against first cause reasoning is: "There was a quantum event that formed out of nothing, the first stuff." Well, quantum mechanics is something, and if something already exists, then you haven't addressed the first cause. It's my favorite argument because in it atheists are resorting to an irrational, anything's possible solution (a quantum event) to the question. Not only does the solution fail, it points out the desperation in a strong atheist thinker.
Why does existence itself require a cause? Nobody knows what causation is. Your watch was not made to exist by any cause. All it's materials existed long before anyone thought about making it. Causation only deals with already existing things, and without existance, it does not even make a lot of sence to talk about causation. Would it not be logical to conclude that existence was always there? It is silly to say existence needs a cause for itself since we don't even know what causation is.
@mortalisk Nobody knows what causation is? It's only the basis for all human knowledge. If it were not for law of cause and effect, then everything would happen randomly "without cause". This is merely to say that if causation is true then there is a first cause or 'original existence' to use your word. This First Cause or First Existence is what we call God.
