well first of all GDR and DDR are the same thing only in two different languages. West Germany could accordingly either be called FRG (Federal Republic of Germany) or BRD (Bundesrepublik Deutschland). And as a matter of fact the anthem was not sung anymore from some point on in the early 70s. The very reason being exactly it explicitly mentioning German's unity which was not a part of GDR policies anymore.

Great rendition of the former DDR anthem. That said I never understood why the lyrics say "Deutschland, einig Vaterland" when in fact the GDR and DDR were two separate countries divided by a rather lethal and menacing wall.
