Greg Moore you were taken from us too soon. And there will be few who ever have the amount of talent you had at that young of an age. This was real racing, man i miss Michigan open wheel racing!!!!!!
Holy crap, look at that - a NATURAL victory celebration!! So much better than the "Wait until we say 'NOW' shit they do nowdays in most American series (not that I watch any).
Thanks champcar4ever for posting. I recorded the end of the race to a video casette, oh I was soo happy then, because my favourite driver won the race, but it was sad too as I heard the news that three spectators died..RIP
July 26, 1998. Should be the date - I was there for the crash, probably about 15-20 feet away. I was about 11 - it's kinda tramatizing, I've always wanted to seee the video though... I'll watch it after I leave this :/
Was this the last year they had two races at Michigan? I know that in 2000 and 2001 they only had one race. I don't remember if there was a 99 U.S. 500 though...
There was only 1 race in Michigan each year after 1996. There was a 1999 US 500. The last year Michigan was run twice before 1996 was 1986 and the second race was 250 miles.
The hansford device was created after Zanardi won the 1997 U.S. 500 by 31 seconds, which meant he was very close to lapping the second-place car, which had Mark Blundell at the wheel. very exciting racing, they should do the same in IRL
What a masterful final lap by the ULTRA-talented Greg Moore! Superb how he dove low going into 1 and also he broke the tow from his car to Vasser on the backstretch with quick swerves, along with seemingly superior straight-line speed.
He truly was destined to become one of the all-time greats with his prodigious talents.
i have the whole race but more to the point to any one who watched the whole race do you remember alex zanardi giving paul tracy the thumbs up at 245 mph just an obsarvation
Best Racing there ever has been , i remember i didnt even care about Indy at this time, i was younger, but every year i watched Michigan, still do when the IRL goes there, its the same, but its Michigan, i wish the cars could still draft and sling shot like they do in this race, the cars sound awesome too!
Great video! Great driving by Greg Moore! I'm so sorry about what happened to Greg a year later. He was a good guy and great driver with a promising career waiting ahead of him. I'm also sorry about what happened to Alex Zanardi in 2001. It's just so unfair that things like that happen to the best, young and most beloved people.
Amazing race!! I love CART at the big ovals....I miss em. Interesting comparison that occurred to me about Adrian, Greg, the US500 and the 1999 Fontana race............
At Michigan: Greg won, Adrian crashed, and there was death---
At Fontana: Adrian won, Greg crashed, and there was death---
I remeber watching this race, long time ago. They all blamed Adrian about it, but yknow its not his fault, its a tire for chrissake! It was all bad luck =( poor ppl there.
Two reasons. First, the tragic accident at this race (1998 Michigan) served to drive crowds away, despite the exciting racing at the time. Second of all, Roger Penske sold his stake in the Michigan and California Speedways in 2000, then departed to the IRL in 2001, effectively ending CART's relationship with the tracks.
CART tried them out at the short ovals in 2000-01. The problem was that those tracks, unlike at superspeedways where slipstreaming is at a premium for overtaking, passing depends more on a strategic maneuvering through traffic. As a result, passing was almost impossible at tracks like Milwaukee, Nazareth, and Gateway.
Well, unfortunately there are no superspeedways on the schedule now. After Gil de Ferran turned a lap at almost 242 mph at California, a new Hanford device was developed in 2002. The result was that speeds decreased 15 mph, and there were 73 lead changes in 440 miles (shortened due to darkness, I think).
A Hanford device is the rear wing on the back of the car. It was developed after Mauricio Gugelmin qualfied at almost 241 mph at California Speedway in 1997. It was supposed to slow the cars and make the racing a little better. It did both, slightly. However, they had already made the speed back up in a couple years.
Indy back at michigan plz

The actual reason for the Handford Device was to slow down the cars after Mauricio Gugelmin qualified at 240mph at Fontana in 1997.

Champ car should take over Michigan; IRL dropped it!
They should take California and Pheonix, too.
They need to include the ovals.
And probably grab Road Atlanta.
Good video!

They should, but they don't know what the heck they are doing. Tony knows what he is doing but I do wish he would keep Michigan in 08...

is it just me or is there no saftey fence at all down the backstrech and turn 3?

No, they did not have a catch fence all the way around the track until about 2000.
