I heard in the news that Network rail were looking at opening a new line along side the Midland Mainline to Sheffield. If common sense and economy prevailed this must mean re-opening the sadly missed GCR?? Loading gauge is great and much of the infra-structure is intact
I heard that, but it will mean concrete platform stops with no buildings, modern trains; and I'm guessing the preserved GCR will be kicked off, and the 'Gap' plan, extending to WIlford and further into Leicseter will be destroyed; if you think of it like this, it shouldn't happen.
railway vandalism still continues as oil runs out, climate change kicks in and the population rises. After the next ice age (due to climate change) this policy will be akind to destroying rain forest, polluting the sea, etc. And low carbon railways will live on!!
Thanks for the video. I've been down as well, once in the summer to take some pictures, and a few weeks ago, just after the steel spans were taken down. Its nice to see the is a video record of it still surviving. Do you know when the bowstring bridge is coming down?
I took lots of photos of it before demolition started, particularly underneath. It was in a desperate condition with major steelwork rusted through and cracks in brickwork you could stick your fist it. It would have fallen down of its own accord fairly soon !
Yep, but only just. It closed to traffic last Friday (Oct.19th.) and demolition of the main span should be finished in ten days, to allow the new temporary road and river bridge to open for traffic while the remainder is demolished and the new permanent bridge and level road is built.

Hi thanks for comment. I hope to go down again soon to take another video of progress so far.
There's a move afoot among local preservation groups to try and stop the destruction of the bowstring bridge. I hope they succeed.

Well we certainly know it is now because it's already gone!

I've walked over that many a time on my way to the football mostly. Sad to know it's gone now.

Hi, It's Upperton Road, Leicester. LE2 7xx, linking Narborough Road and the canal crossing at Western Boulevard. It's definitely worth a viewing.
