@capoeirnesto With a Theremin! Played on the album by Dr. Samuel Hoffman, I believe...and there's no special effect on his voice but that's where the "microphone-breaking voice" myth came from because it happened at that session. Or, DIDN'T happen, I should say!
In response to mollkatles re; the "dullness" of Beefheart and Zappa, please provide an example of an artist who is not "dull".
I would like to present a musical challange. Listen to Zappa- the "Roxy and Elsewhere", album, starting with "Village of the Sun". If anyone can provide and example of a more accomplished live band playing in a more technically proficient non dull manner, please do so. Also, Beefheart "My Head Is My Only House.. and "Too Much Time" . Classics that will outlive us.
Grooves and hooks are bourgeois.Van Vliet wasn't after American Bandstand danceability ratings.he was de constructing music .testing it structurally ,in a wind tunnel ,any F'n thing he felt needed to do
The Winterland show opening for the Mothers was a riot. I dont think all of those people in the first 20 rows really would have lynched you. No brains, No rope. No ears. Webcor, Webcor.
@freerangericky, I am a fan of artists who push their art to the limits, and I am watching this because I know little about beefheart, but I have to say, the music is dull, the same way zappa is dull. I understand they were attempting to get to places musically that had not been tread on before, but the end result is boring.
I don't think as the listener you have to understand the context, understand what they were railing against, music must stand on it's own before I will consider the rest
@mathewkader are you retarded? Seriously, you sound retarded? like you learned profanity yesterday and like any lack-wit 7 year old you're going to get as many cusswords into one sentence as you can. Be smarter stupid
When watching this, I feel that these folks were war heroes in their own respect - with all due respect for the D-day folks a.o., I don't mean to tread on toes, OK? But still, Ry Cooder makes me think of pure heroism - him, and anybody else daring to take part of the Beefheart (and sometimes Zappa) weirdness. Not that he's here, but where is Denny Whalley these days? Truly love your work, man!! You & Ry give slide a good name!! Nobody can make big eyed beans from Venus move like you do!!
I knew don then during the time he was making Safe as Milk and he didn't like drugs . I was about 12 years old and spent alot of time with his family , his mom and his granny . I remember that Don gave me a stack of these bumper stickers that came with the record that had a baby's face on them and said Safe as milk . I stuck them all over the school buss and all over the school. I remember him John French playing me songs from Safe as Milk that didn't have vocals yet .
There is a picture of John Lennon on a small couch with Yoko (circa 1969) and in the background is a small wooden cupboard with a Safe as Milk sticker on it.....
For those who don't know - the complete story of Don (captain beefheart) falling off the 10-foot stage. He later confessed, he had taken LSD, and looked and saw a girl in the front row - whose face now appeared like a huge fish - which caused him to retreat in horror and to fall. This might sound fantastical - but for any knowledgable fans who read this - they will recognise I am right.
The captain was very unique. He definately knew what he was referring to in his song "I feel like Ahcid".
These little anecdotes are a wonderful glimpse into Don's character. He shows all the signs of artistic genius-the difficult, irascible personality traits and manic energy producing works of pure uncompromising beauty and inventive power.
The drum patterns on one of the tracks on Weasels Ripped My Flesh is similar to "The Blimp(Moustrap Replica)" but that would mean Zappa borrowing Beefheart.
LOL.. Man I love that song. Ice Cream for Crow and Doc at the Radar Station are among the only LP's I bothered to turn into mp3 files. I'm really into making love to a vampire with a monkey on my knee.
his voice is harsh and intense, more so than most metal and hardcore vocalists. i love it. the way he brings up the last sylable of some words is so unique and hard to duplicate
Ry had it right..beefheart got too wierd. Time to go and Frank Zappa said the same thing also. I firmly believe that VanVient stole some of Zappas music. But its been said a thousand times about him ripping off Zappa. I just wish Don the best, chaseing those demons!! Frank has been dead since 91 and the last person to be able to bury Van Vlient....a dam plagerist. Stole off of Frank, and well documented that he did. RIP Frank..........
I really really love Safe as Milk. Why it isn't regarded as one of the finest albums of the era puzzles me. Zig Zag Wanderer, Electricty, Drop Out Boogie, Abba Zabba, Sure 'Nuff 'n Yes I Do.
