hey man, very talented. Just wondering to get that cool look of the more darker bit of road in the middle of the lanes howd you do it? just darker grey n simply painted it orrr?
@nickfrank1 I just used the tar color paint without mixing it with white. In order to do the road I add a lot of white to the black/tar color paint to give it the gray color I want. Then to do the patchwork i simply mix in very little white paint to the black paint. That is it.
Hey Al. What if you took and added some black acrylic paint right into that Woodland Scenics powder and just turned the pavement stuff the color you wanted as your road? Then you dont need to paint and if it chips, its all the same color in the first place and no white will show on the bottom.
Good thought BUT I have already tried it. It doesnt work. It changes it on a molecular eve so that it will not bond correctly. It simply needs to be painted. You can add a drop or two to give it a grayer look as opposed to the white look but if you add enough to make it the color you want it will not work. Good thought though
No chalks or powder for that. I use black acrylic paint and the 1 inch paint brush that I have in this video. I dip just the tip of the brush in a small bowl with the paint in it. I dry brush the brush on a paper towel until it is almost dry. Then I repeat that twice more if it is the first time to be used because I want the paint really blended in the brush. Ok so then I dry brush the road down the two sides until it is the darker color simulating oil and dirt like on real roads. The end
For your idea, how about finding a reference. Like for exact diagrams of roadway signs. Then take those, scale them down on a piece of paper, and then use a hobby knife to with the paper as a stencil to etch to design into some styrene. Then you just finish cutting and add a Popsicle handle. BTW, you did an outstanding job with Woodland Scenics's Smooth-It system. The Jack in the Box was assembled greatly too!
Great video Al, thanks a lot. BTW, on Movie Maker, I have worked with it a lot, and just did a couple vids goofing around from a still digital camera. The key with Movie Maker is to make sure the quality is the default, at least in the latest version. You can just goof around with the quality.
This video came out all fucked up dawg. I edited it and sharpened the image and it just got all fuzzy. It was unlike any of my other videos. Dont worry it was just a a one time F-UP
just an idea, if it's like a new resturant or building or something the parking lot could be darker than the road. But then you'd have to have a straight line at the beginning of the lot. Cool series Thanks for the help 5*****
Yes of course. That is always an option but for realistic looks on a layout you NEED to stick to the "normal" or the "average" of everything. A dark dark gray parking lot would stand out and that takes away from the realism I believe. However what you say is correct, you can model a new road anywhere. I have repairs to my road and used dark gray to model it was freshly paved. Looked real good and realistic because it was not a COMPLETELY dark gray road, just patches.
Thanks a lot dawg. I do like my layout too but the best? Hmmm, Yea I guess so!! LOL I do have skills but so does everyone else who invest time and IMAGINATION!
Haha bag it all up and try to sell it....Priceless. Good tutorial and a great layout to boot. Good work man keep it up. I enjoy watching your videos. Not like everyone else where its just music. You make it interesting and fun. Good work and great layout again hah.
The first 3-4 minutes are fuzzy as shit!! I clicked on the "SHARP" button for the first three videos because I THOUGHT it looked better but NOPE, Not again!

Thanks again for a great video, Al. Just a question. What do you use for the tire marks on the roads? Powdered chalks?
