However, I just tried flip merchanting now with a few different items (pure essence, flax, maple logs etc) and they are buying and selling at exactly the same price and some arn't selling at all. Is this because its quite late at night (9:45) and noone buys then, or am I just doing it wrong? Can anyone help?

Well, those are quite famous on the list of most traded items ingame with very high volumes...

As there are so many, the prices never change too much, you'd be better off choosing items such as herbs... :)

Some armor and weapons are among the higher priced items like 3-10m range. If I want to buy an item overnight for a certain price, will I still be able to sell it the next day for profit at all? Honestly this has got to be one, if not the best merchenting guide out there for beginners. What I personally did was fish until I had enough money to get 69 summoning, then I hunted Grenwalls (because I had about 81 hunter at that time). As of now I'm 97 hunter and I've probably made over 90M with it, I just spent it on a whole bunch of useless shit. I have about 40M now and I'm merching to make more.

If you don't want toget those requirements, (as lame as this is going to sound) you can always kill dragons. Slaying long term is also great.

Honestly, this guide deserves all the praise! so detailed and straight forward. I've been playing Runescape for over 7 years but i have never merchanted or did any form of flipping. I made half a bill from just skilling and slaying.

Last time I merched, I did it on my pure with 1.5m, was looking at 5k blood runes for 140 gp profit each. I went to see what people were selling at and accidently sold all 5k of them instead of just 1. I still made 500k overnight on a lucky trade.
