I absolutely adore Patty Griffin and this is one of my favorite songs (especially to play while driving down the open road!) You did a fantastic job of putting images to it!
Great video, I watch and listen to this weekly. Please know that your work on this has an effect on people's lives, and there is nothing more valuable than that. A sincere thank you.
Forget what thebig whigs may think, Patty Griffin is the real deal. I don't understand why she isn't huge....maybe perhaps because her music is too real; too heartfelt: too personal... Regardless I'll dance to anything she sings....as she is like an old friend, sending advice through music, through lyrics, filled with love, hope and desire...useless or otherwise.
@amc25yrfn thats exactly it !!! she is a gift for those of us who need to hear her work, but cant be bothered with mass commercialization nonsense............i dont necessarily agree with her opinions but thats ok here in America.....Peace....
I have heard several critical reviews of this song trying to explan what it means: that it is a song about leaving home, knowing that you don't fit in and never will: that it is a suicide song: that it is a song about letting go of the things you thought you should want in exchange for freedom from depression that following what your heart knows it must be wil bring: my own take, is that it is a poetic masterpiece to extract beauty and consolation from depression and pain. You be the judge.
neither, she's giving up on hope in a "better future", and beginning to see life as it is, and life life as it comes, she is giving up on the external, and looking the reflexions of into her own mind. or some other hippie nonsense, anyhow, saying goodbye to things that hold you down can be freeing, despite the deep sense of loss that is explained in this song. I'm a little inebriated, so take what i say for what it is... jesus peace.
