  • Message Maj. Bung dropped onto the deck of the Midway as they lacked radio comms:

Can you move the Helicopter to the other side, I can land on your runway, I can fly 1 hour more, we have enough time to mouve. Please rescue me.

Major Bung, wife and 5 child

  • This is amazing and heart touching. Can someone with knowledge please reply or message me and let me know how he is doing and where they are now type of thing?

  • Is that an American Air Force star on that plane?

  • @andrelebaron : No, it's not

  • dude this is one guy with BIG BALLS

  • I actually know Bung personally and out of respect to his privacy, all I will say about how or where he is today, he is doing well and lives in Florida. He is an amazing individual who is so unassuming and humble. If you met him, you would never know that he did such an incredible thing.

  • @thefabulousnavyboi : thx for the info

  • @thefabulousnavyboi

I can tell he is humble just by this short video; he is happy to be on the ship but the cheer he gave demonstrates that his accomplishment was just routine when it was everything but routine. The guy risked everything miraculously finding the Midway out at sea after evading enemy gun fire. Amazing story, especially hearing it from an old Navy pilot when I was touring the USS Midway in San Diego. It is a must see for its unique Navy staff members that all have served.

  • I watch it many times. Excellent

  • THANKS MAJOR LY BUNG.

  • I attended the 35th Fall of Saigon Anniversary Celebration on the USS Midway last Friday. The event featured a reenactment of a Bird Dog flying 4 circles high above the ship in remembrance to when Major Ly Bung and his family did in April 1975. Many in the crowd of about 4000 waved their US and Vietnamese flags each time the plane neared. Major Ly Bung spoke to the audience and retold what happened 35 years ago. His wife and five children were in attendance.

  • Wow! What a moving story and video clip! Glad someone took this video!

  • One of the greatest US and allied forces evacuation efforts in US history. I was there and watched the Bird Dog land on the Midway -- thanks in great measure to (Then) Captain Chambers and his Air Boss. There's nothing pretty about war. We rescued about 6,000 civilians and expats before it was impossible to rescue any others. In short, we did the best we could under the circumstances. This will be remembered as a high point in our history for our valiant efforts.

  • @hamdxr Good for you guys for rescuing the refugees and the Bung Ly family. I work down the street from the USS Midway, and may try to go to the 35th anniversary of the "Operation Frequent Wind" tomorrow. Major Bung Ly will be there. Will you be there?

  • one of the lowest points in US history is when we left allies and families behind in Vietnam.

  • Why is the communist channel showing this footage? you can see the logo on the right side on top.

Anyway, I wonder where is Major Ly Bung now

  • His name is Major Ly Bung... He flew over the carrier few times before dropping a note that said "Can you move these helicopter to the other side, I can fly one hour more, we have enough time to move. Please rescue me. Maj Ly-Bung, Wife and five child." He landed succesfully and became the firts VNAF aircraft carrier qualified pilot....

  • One of the worst things the US ever did was run away from SE Asia, abandoning our allies. You can thank the liberal "peaceniks" for it; they cared nothing about the misery and death we left behind. Some of them sympathized with the Communists, and felt our Asian allies were quislings who deserved to suffer. I was just 12 when I saw the collapse on TV; even then I felt a child's fury and shame, knowing that my country was acting disgracefully. I have despised the American left since that day.

  • @jp6869 That were because of the hippies. They were the one that against the war and raised the protesting wave in the US.

  • fall of saigon

  • You have no idea how horrible the country has been since The Fall of Saigon, the Communist has done nothing but bring suffer to the people in their own country. They look out for no one but themselves. They fill their pockets with millions of dollars and send their kids to oversea, leaving the country going to ruing and selling them to the Chinese Communists.

  • @beautycharmaine Sounds exactly like the South was before the US withdrawal, just change "Communists" to "Americans."

  • The 1st O1E carrier landing

  • who is this? is he a important historical figure?

  • This is Major Ly Bung... He flew over the carrier for a few times and threw down a note that said "Can you move these helicopter to the other side, I can fly one hour more, we have enough time to move. Please rescue me. Maj Ly-Bung, Wife and five child." He landed succesfully and became the firts VNAF aircraft carrier qualified pilot.... My kind of HERO. *kudos* to Ly Bung. Make me proud.
