I saw Lou from the second row as he performed this, and was profoundly moved. It's written to Laurie Anderson.. you could feel his love for her, it filled the room. Peter Gabriel's cover is a hackneyed exploitation of the power of this song. Gabriel needs to stick with quirky pop, and if he's outta material, fade into oblivion. But don't do that. Don't think you have some kind of perspective to add here. Lou wrote a poem to his love. No true artist would repackage that kind of inspiration.
@baTonkaTruck .... quirky pop??? since when Peter Gabriel does pop???.... Ignorance once again........ exploitation?? it was done by common agreement..... Ignorance once again.... Most musician respect Peter Gabriel for pushing bounderies.... so stop, the only reason of this comment is probably 'cos you think Peter Gabriel did a much improved version of it. "No true artist" blah blah blah?... There's few people you can call "true artist"... Peter Gabriel without a doubt, is one of them !
@baTonkaTruck ....ok seriously Gabriel is proving that these lyrics and songs are incredible. Don't bash the fact that an incredible artist has covered this song. The fact that he did it is an honor to Reed on what he did. No need to compare the two versions.....btw gabriel is not about pop but your post is somewhat ignorant....
A fair rebuttal. I have a personal opinion about covers. You don't have to share it. I personally believe that Lou's song doesn't need Gabriel to "prove" that it's incredible. I've had a song covered by another artist, and it was definitely an honor, so you're right about that. As per your comment about pop, clearly we have a semantic disagreement, but it's largely irrelevant. I respect your opinion, though I can assure you I am anything but ignorant of music history and art.
I saw Lou perform this beautiful song at the 9:30 club in Washington DC in 2008. After the show, I searched through his discography and couldn't find the song on any album. On his website, there wasn't any mention of Lou releasing a new album of original material. However, I found out that Peter Gabriel covers this song on his upcoming album 'Scratch My Back'. How about that.
greatr video guy.saw him yesterday in brussels and met him after show....great moment two signatures on lps transformer and of course berlin.respect to this fantastic performer...higher than a legend.
Saw him this night too- i even payed to rent those mini binoculars to see him closer!
this song was amazing, suprised you got it so well, i tried to capture some videos but the sound was to loud and bust my sound microphone or something :( got some good pics though!
I loved the way he swapped guitars after practically every song!
@passthrufire: I will be also in munich, coming from hamburg, to see him twice. But I don´t have tix, until now 3:20 a.m. If you like you can leave a message on my mobile: ++49 (0) 172-422 8 777 Wham Bamm, thank you man!
I was there! Amazing night! Thanks so much for uploading these videos, I was so absorbed in the magic that I can't recall any specific moments, I just know it was amazing!
This song was the perfect way to close it, everyone just stood and watched in silence and awe.

Lou Reed is still a legend, one of the best nights of my life.
I'm so pleased you enjoyed the videos. I think it's a good way to remember bits of the show too and I often see things (esp. with the zoom) that I've totally missed at the gig. I agree, it WAS a great night.
And he still can't get a good guitar tone after some 40+ years...Good band, though, and it is a nice song.

Lou Reed's vocals make John Cale seem like Pavarotti.
