Truck dose-pipe experiment

I have heard fuck loads of turbo diesel patrols dose. A mate of mines diesel flutters with 16psi. And mines trying to @ 14psi. Type of turbo and intercooler will determine dose or not dose

Lol the dose is the compressor surging when air is forced back through the turbo after is it blocked off by the throttle body ( which diesels don't have.)

WTF I would think anyone that knows at least a little something about diesels would know that it's not gonna make the fluttering sound...there's no throttle blade for the air to back up against and get forced back into the turbo. Sheesh.

MOST diesels don't have throttles.

as for bigmilan; there's an intake tract. but no throttle.

the 'throttle' on a diesel engine (or the thing that controls engine RPM) is the rate as to which the fuel is delivered. more fuel = higher RPM. this is usually governed by a mechanical fuel pump or electronic computer unit.

the thing that is responsible for drawing air into a diesel engine is the high compression ratio; which acts as a vacuum.

I have an '09 Audi TT TDi which is a 2Litre 4cylinder with a front mount cooler installed and a 3 inch dose pipe. It works bloody perfect. Turbo diesel can produce compressor surge.

A diesel can NOT dose, as it has no throttle!

Stepping off the pedal only reduces fuel to the injectors. You need to close the throttle opening at high boost to get compressor surge (Dose).

It would be easier just to sit FATTY in the passenger seat and he could make that noise over a PA since he loves that noise so much.

ur an idiot i have been around deseils for years and they do have a throttle every piston motor has a throttle even deisel and not every deisel has injection as i have been involved with carbie'd deisel forby's with holley's

a card has the throttle built into it it has the little butterfly inside it like throttle body but a carb also lets fuel and shit in.....

It has an open intake with no throttle. Air flows unrestricted into the cylinders.

when you hit the accelerator(pay attention to the spelling buggar4466) on a diesel, you increase the amount of diesel being injected, this in turn increases the force of the explosion. the injector pump does the speed control, the air intake simply provides the air that the valves allow in

Hes not an idiot. Diesel engines DO NOT have a throttle, they work by compression ignition. If its carburated, its not a "Diesel" its an "Otto" even if it DOES burn diesel fuel.

Wrong. Throttle is exactly that...it throttles the air into the engine. On a deisel its called an excelorator. Throttle is striclty slang. when somenoe throttles you they cut off your air.

the reason vl's and other cars dose is becasue your putting the turbo in a condition where it surges.

this happens when the flow through the turbo is to low for the speed of the turbo.

so when changing gears on a vl, you close the throttle, the air stops flowing, turbo keeps spinning, then built up air flows back through the turbo, which cause turbulance, the dosing noise, and the cycle repeats untill the turbo speed has dropped below the surge point.

close but no. its because VLs dont come with a factory bov, so when you let go of the accelerator and the throttle closes the air has nowhere to go but back through the pipes and out of the turbo intake.

a dose pipe is just a pipe that amplifies the sound.

all vl's do it even wihtout a dose pipe, you just cant hear it. :)

Wrong (ish).

When on boost air is getting sucked into the intake manifold through the turbo. When the accelerator is let off, the throttle is closed, yet the turbo is still spooling so its still sucking in air. This air gets sucked in, hits the closed throttle and then basically bounces back into the turbo which is spinning, and "cuts" up the air. Since there is no intake filter the sound of the "cut" pressure gives the "tu tu tu", and it goes quiter as the rebounded air slows down the turbine.

Im sure other turboed cars and trucks will make a similar sound to this if you take of the induction piping. I did it to my mums 4wd on my Ls (it was an auto), and drove around shopping centres going vuuu PTSHH every time i back off. It's just a bit dangerous considering all the shit that can get blown into it, then straight through into the engine.

Ok so... you know its diesel, which doesn't usually use a throttle body, which will not let you be able to trap the excess boost pressure between the closed throttle and turbo compressor wheel to give you a proper dose. Also basic diesels don't use an AFM or advanced ECU, but a type of direct injection. Best chance to get a dose is a big cooler, big spool up.. try holding the brake, and make the turbo work. Then you may be able to get some thing going.

yea makes sense with the lack of throtle body. well i gave it some descent load going up the hill and a bit further up the street out of view, but it was still just a loud whistle followed by a big PSHHHHT. lol.

but my bigger truck would definitely be a lot more dose-able. lol it's full on high tech. lols. IVECO. maybe one day. you can already kinda hear it dose. it's WAAAY louder and longer spool and longer "dose" than the UD in this video.
