  • Thia Megia's version of this song is much better....

  • manohmanohman. all this comparison. bottom line: those who LOVE MR will say she is IT. those who LOVE DR will say she is IT. and nothing any of us can say will change their minds. but i will say ONE thing, and not just because i LOVE me some DR&S! as GREAT as MR is, i have never heard her tackle a SUPREME song. DIANA has done ARETHA, 4 TOPS, TEMPTS, BILL WITHERS, ROGERS & HART......

  • Diana just really needs to stop. She is not a soul singer

  • I love Diana, but Martha's version is the best!

  • Starting at 2:09, what Martha does on her version of this song is far better than Diana!

  • @Cclinks87 Exactly. Always been my fav' part of the song....esp' when she goes ''Ohhh yeah" None of these covers seem to do it justice!

  • Martha & the Vandella's rocked the hell outta this song. Diana aint touchin Martha at all! Martha sang this song!!!

  • Oh please to all the haters. Diana Ross had fame after the Supremes because she was DIANA ROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MARTHAS THE BEST SHE SOUNDS MORE ORIGINAL

  • Loveee Motown music.

  • Nice arrangement but Diana just doesn't have the pipes for this one.

  • Oh my god the supremes are so shitty compared to Martha and The Vandellas

  • thumbs up if its a HEATWAVE outside today!!! 105 Degrees!

  • LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!

  • AHHH MY FAVOURITE SONG <3

  • I grew up on this song and until today I wasn't even aware the Supremes had remade it. For those who don't know, this was a 1963 hit by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas.

  • Thumbs up if your here cuz of chiddy bang and mac miller

  • Kudos to Diana for trying

  • I like this version but the martha puts me in tears of joy when she sings this

  • no like:(

  • LOVE this song!

  • Nah, this song belongs to Martha and the Vandellas. Yeah, Martha would have whipped Dianna on this one! I hate to say it, but the Vandellas would whip Flo and Mary in the background too! Diana didn't have that true grit in her voice like Martha did, but she tried, lol! SMH! The Supremes owned their songs and Martha and the Vandellas owned their songs in my book

  • 8 people have chills

  • Diana Ross needed to STOP with this one. WRONG SONG DIANA !

  • This is a very good cover

  • NOBODY sings baby i need...like the tops. my girl like the tempts...and THIS song like MR&V. but the supremes, led by ross, could DO other artists' songs like nobody else. i have yet to hear the aforementioned DO a SUPREMES' song with PASSION.

  • it's a good version, but nobody outdoes Martha on this one!

  • @oceanbound222 your very funny I guess ur trying to piss off the Mary Wilson Florence Ballard and The Vandellas queens all in one breath lol

  • @oceanbound222

Good thing nobody want to read your "book"!

  • Thumbs up if you came from Sister Act

  • @Vipar557 i did eheh

  • this is the version thia used in american idol

  • Flo and Mary look alike??? Are you crazy??? Two beauties in two different ways. Flo was a buxom, sultry type..... Mary the cute, shy girl next door.

As far as Diana (Diane), she cannot match Martha Reeves for depth of voice. Just compare the "Yeah, Yeah"s at the end of the song. Martha reaches down into her gut, Diana, although a great singer, can't compete.

  • Is it me or do Flo and Mary kind of look alike?

  • The backup vocal on this one are stronger, but Diana doesn't compare to Martha.

  • love is like a good ass whupping-!

  • Martha will always win this round, Diana. How could you have thought you would sing a better version??????? You'll never sing a better version of this. You should have said to Berry Gordy: "Only Martha can sing this song. Don't be ridiculous".

  • @astralagosto I agree .. Marthea wins hands down. Joan Osborne comes in second.

  • @Verfemdung I didn't know Joan Osbourne did a version of this. I'll look it up right now. Thanks.

  • @astralagosto

Yeah Joan Osborne really did a great job on her cover of this song. Check it out. Make sure you select the version from the documentary "Standing in the Shadows of Motown".

This version here is Ok with Diana Ross, but the original & J. Osborne's take are really something special.

  • @pgbruiser Hi pgbruiser, Thank you for letting me know about the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown. I agree that the original and Joan Osbourne's take are something special.

  • @astralagosto Actually Your being Ridiculous. Motown artist sang others Songs ALL THE TIME at MOTOWN. And Motown Released the best versions. She Coverd Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrells Aint No Mountain High Enough..and took it to No.1 on the Pop charts...Marvin and Tammis version not only did it Not Make No.1 on Pop( only got to 19) but it didnt make No.1 on R&B either..further More. Diana and the Supremes had 12 No.1s singing ther own songs. Martha an Vandellas Never had a No.1 or either chart.

  • @blkshepherd You're the one being ridiculous. Diana sang Ain't no Mountain High Enough very well. But other Motown songs, no she didn't. She only sang the Supreme songs very well. That is it and the Ain't No Mountain High Enough song. Her voice is all right, not the beautiful voice of Martha Reeves. Martha could outsing Diana anytime. Martha and the Vandella's HAD a No.1 hit with Heat Wave on either chart. Diana only had success after the Supremes because she was Berry Gordy's lover.

  • @astralagosto i agree ..diana was a good singer ,,but martha had real soul

    no contest

  • @erlock21 Hi erlock21, Martha had real soul. Diana never had soul. She was only promoted because Berry liked her the best out of all the Supremes. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't speak to Mary (I don't remember her name), the last Supreme that is still alive after Diana. Berry gave her and Florence Ballard the shaft to promote Diana.

  • @astralagosto Really? You think so? Silly me. I thought it was because of her singing.

  • I beg to differ...I listened to her version. No comparison for me. I love Diana"s voice. Martha owns nowhere to run, ;but, not this one. This is about my favorite song ever.

  • Oh diana...not with that thin ass voice

  • @Sojayisahater Her voice is not what I would call thin here - not for pop music. Now Janet Jackson and Madonna - THAT'S THIN.

  • Martha owns this by far!

  • this song rocks

  • Martha 1 Diana 0.0

  • yay love it ^_^

  • The Who's version of this fuckin' rocks

  • Diana and Martha are both awesome, but Martha wins this round !!

  • I Diana did a excellent cover!

  • this is martha reeves and paul wellers tune......... the best then the cover ...cant beat either

  • mary and flo sound better on this backing than the vandellas but martha and diane need to trade...lol..martha get your song back...hahahahaha...wait now that i hear it it doesnt even sound like mary and flo are even on this track...hahahahahahaha..i trip myself out

  • mary and flo sound better on this backing than the vandellas but martha and diane need to trade...lol..martha get your song back...hahahahaha

  • mary and flo sound better on this backing than the vandells but martha and diane need to trade...lol..martha get your song back...hahahahaha

  • Florence Ballard once said in an interview "I thought I was better suited to [sing] some of the tunes". This song PERFECTLY justifies her sentiment.

  • @FaReaList Yeah, unfortunately Berry Gordy never really saw the Supremes as a real group, but just a vehicle for Ross's stardom. There's a clear shift from more group oriented songs to Ross solo numbers where the other Supremes could be (and eventually were) replaced by studio back up singers

Early Supreme records were greater than the sum of their parts, but gradually become less so - hardly any interesting recordings after Flo left - until Diana left too and they became a real group again.

  • Much as I loved the original Supremes, it's Martha, hands down!

  • Diana enunciates the lyrics more clearly than Martha. Same beat sung in a different style. Intersting to hear Mowtown artist sing each others songs. Hopefully it did not cause much rivalry.

  • This doesn't work for me. Overall it's too close to the original which means Diana's voice just doesn't quite cut it. I think Flo could have done great things with it. If Diana just had to sing it, the arrangement should have been changed more.

Also the sound balance is way off, towards the end you can hardly hear Mary and Flo behind Diana's (not very good here) riffing. The 'god ahead girl' backing is an important part of the song and you can hardly hear it here.

  • excellent !

  • theives.........I liked Diana until I heard this lol.

  • Martha's rendition was GREAT!! NO DOUBT! But Diana's talent is good enough to make this tune her own new creation.

  • It doesn't sound as good as the last time i heard it...;(

  • I like this one better than Martha Reeves' original.

  • I like Martha Reeves' version better. This one sounds too controlled (not really the right adjective but the Martha Reeves song has more oomph).

  • @theShowStopper321 Martha's version had more soul. I like Diana, but she did not have power in her voice like Martha. Her voice was perfect for pop.

  • O no it isn't it was the martha version and it is better

  • Was this the version that was in the movie backdraft ?

  • I love this lighter version, Mary and Flo's backing was a lot better than the Vandellas. I'm a HUGE Diana fan but Martha TORE this song up and was the better singer. Diana was the star though... if you can't figure out why just watch any live performances of Diana and Martha... you'll see why!

  • Very, very good, wonderful.

  • motown was messy

  • I really came here expecting to bash the poster for miscrediting the artist of the song, but - Look! It really IS The Supremes!

  • This version sounds more polished an smooth. I think I prefere the Vandella's version best because it sounds more raw and emotional. Does that make sense to you all out there?

  • @blktenor yes the Vandella's version is more rich.

  • Nothing beats the original but I give The Supremes their props; they sang the hell out of this song.

  • diana sound good on this song

  • I prefer Martha & Vandellas to sing the song as it was too,,,,however it is a rare find here. Cool! Plus we all know that singers such as Dusty Springfield and others all covered each other's hits...Even The Blossoms even sang Dancing in the Street. lol..cool

  • It's different, some sweet than Martha and The Vandelettes but My favourite group is The Supremes, So I love the 2

  • Now, if you really want to talk about damaging this song, the one and only criminal is Linda Rondstat. Listen to it once to see I'm right, then avoid it for the rest of your life!

  • @dvlaries linda ronstaat did a good job covering this song. in fact she did better than diana ross.

  • Both versions are good, although yes, Martha's is of course definitive. Marha lets go with passionate, feverish abandon and with a knowing, experienced maturity that Ross was not allowed on record yet, not in the mid-60s. So Ross did her version with kittenish flirtation -something she knew very much how to do- and that interpretation is welcome too. Correctly, only Martha's was put on the market as a single.

  • The Supremes recorded this several times actually and I thought all the versions were great. Motown often recorded songs several times aiming to get everything the best it could be. That says a lot! The Supremes version of "In My Lonely Room" used the Vandellas music track then newly recorded another layer of strings and horns.

  • martha really sang the pants off this song. diana doesn't compare

  • Martha & the Vandellas will always own Diana & The Supremes they to me and im sure to many more fans Martha & her girls were sexy and awesome and the ultimate girl band of the 60s!

  • martha rocked this better, but u tried diah

  • diana sound real good on this song

  • Sock it to me, Diana !!!!!!!

  • This sounds far tamer and duller than the Martha Reeves and the Vandellas original

  • TRASH? what song are you listening to? TRUE, martha OWNS it, but the SUPREMES had a way of singing other people's songs and sometimes OWNING them. love MR&V, but i never heard her sing BABY LOVE. in fact how many people can sing a SUPREME song and make it their OWN. THE SUPREMES RULE STILL!!!

  • Flo could have done way better on this...I bet Martha feel over laughing when she heard this

  • i love Diane, but this is trash... Martha must have scrunched her face up and vomitted when she heard this ...

  • thanks so much for postinhg this I love it.

  • i really think it's flo and the andantes doing the backgrounds. mary is the one who is missing. it sounds like it's flo doing the low and high parts with the andantes doing their own thing, you can tell when flo would sing the low parts she had a very distinctive voice (ex: Falling In Love with Love, Somewhere, etc.)

  • THE SUPREMES had 'BALLS' covering not only this MR&V song, but LOVE MAKES ME DO FOOLISH THINGS. they successfully tackled stevie, 4tops, sly & the family stone. and in her career DR even took on bill withers, streisand. and as much as i LOVE the aforementioned ARTISTS, did they ever attempt to sing BABY LOVE, WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO,BACK IN MY ARMS AGAIN? THE SUPREMES EARNED their TITLE!!!

  • yeaaa thy should have let flo sing lead diana doset sound that good with this one Martha did it better with this one

  • They should've let Flo sing this song

  • Diana need not try, Martha sang her under a bus on this one.

  • @HaliB75 HAHA!! Totally agree!

She can't hold a candle to Martha.

  • Holand-Dozier-Holland should of used Florence for this song since it is more of a soulful type of ballad

  • Martha owns this song, but Di gives it hell herself.I could see Flo or Mary belting this also.Mary covered Come And Get These Memories pretty well.

  • I HATE this arrangement! It's a watered-down version of the original, but, Diana /was/is more than capable of handling the original tempo & intensity. I'd even add strings. Other than that, I'd lower the key, at least, one full tone, for both ladies, each of whom brought something special to this classic song.

  • of course its a matter of opinion as to who sounds better martha or diana. but sorry folks Marthas voice is shot all to hell now, and diana still got a pretty decent sound and at least 78% of her voice. martha sounds really really horriable. all that yodeling.

  • best song ever. Diana Ross rules.

  • ehem, this version is 1% of the original, its terrible.

  • The Supremes cant touch this one. But the Vandellas couldnt touch Love is Like an itching In my Heart either. Martha owns this but Diana Owns Love is like an Itching. both buy HDH

  • your right diana doesnt have that high pitch soul voice more like a pop sound what would you think if martha and the vandelas sung mr.postman or the supremes.lol

  • Diana Ross has her own very distictive sound NOONE can compare .Diana Ross voice is uniquely pitched and YES, she can sing with her own brand of sweet sweet sou she always delivers! That being said this is a populated Martha Reeves vocal and Ms Reeves rules this number!

  • this was an out take from the A GO GO lp from 1966 and was recorded in LA with LA musicians and Not THE fUNK BROTHERS.you can tell the difference.i think they do an ok but the production is watered down.needs a remix

  • this is just b.g. makin some dough.I'm sure no one involved took it seriously, maybe Supremes owed him an album or somethin'.

  • this song sucks like hell..worst copy of a song eva!!

  • I haven't even heard the first few bars of this but Diana Ross's voice does not have the guff to sing this song! They shouldn't have done such a disservice to this song. Leave it to Martha and the Vandellas

  • Martha & The Vandellas Sing This Much Better

  • yup

    sorry supremes but

mary and flo did a great backing I filtered it out and listened to it it wasn't so bad but you hear mostly the adantes which are on the right

the instrumental isn't nice as the original one and diane brang no power into it

if flo had sing it with the original instrumental and diane and mary in the back it would be amaaaazing

  • They should have used Martha's original backing track for this or not done it at all. Diana Ross would have handled it nicely. She knows how & when to add the grunt & sweat to a jam when she needs to.

The tempo's too slow, the beat's too quiet.

The Motown producers always put limits on her performances by giving her weak(er) arrangements, but, when they beefed up the arr., as w/ the Temptations duets sessions, she excelled, sounding even sexier than before!

  • I'm a big fan of the Supremes, a big fan of the Vandellas, and a big fan of this song. But the three should not have been mixed, haha.

  • i'm sure mrs ross never heard the song before it's been published or she would have never agreed to it... than again she published other songs that were JUST AS BAD! .. my, she must have been confident

  • Martha and the Vandellas own this song and always will

im surprised Mary and Flo could keep from laughing

  • maybe they did after they were at home like always.... xDDD

  • You're absolutely right. Martha Reeves and the Vandella will always own this song. However, I'm as big a fan of Diana Ross and the Supremes. They're fantastic.

  • I heard the Supremes' version 1st, and yes they should have left this to the Vandellas!

  • i love the supremes but this will always be martha and the vandellas song

  • this dont sound better than martha and vandellas

  • its still very nice

  • the only thing good about this song is the background vocals

  • damn right! .. i wonder how anyone could listen to diana ross' screeching when there's darlene love

  • I filtered the lead out so I only heard the backing and the backing is nice =) but much too quiet

  • lol ..funny =D you can do that? fab. i want that, too..

  • the backing only? xD ok

    do you have msn?

  • ................I think I prefer Martha. You can't "popsize" every R&B song, it just don't sound right all the time.

  • this is my mum and dads song wen i was young.

they not together any more this brings it all bak at this time of year wen i was little at xmas timem me any my bro... nicccce thorts.

1 prezzie at the bottom of our beds to keep us quiet till mum and dad got up lol.

wow how i wish it was still the same.

    happy christmas every 1.xx

  • OMG florence,Mary and H.D.H must have found it so hard not to laugh when diana ATTEMPTS the classic "YEAH YEAH" bit at 2:11 my god it sounds like a cat being put in a blender with a dog then switched on! AHAHA but still could have been worse. . . (NOT!!)

  • god diana sounds TERIBLE on this, hmm . . .

    FLORENCE GET IN HERE!

  • tempts5 FLORENCE BALLARD NEVER WENT OUT WITH BERRY GORDY READ MAXINES BOOK.

  • reminds me of the early 70s when I used to go to an RAF camp disco lol

  • Diana Ross is singing this song like only she can do.. there is none better.

  • Well we know why Flo did not get the lead because she turned down Barry she said in her own words that when they got to Motown that Barry was interesting in her that they went out on a couple dates than she stopped it believe that is when Diana made her move towards him and rest is history so Diana slept her way up to stardom Flo did not and look at what Barry did to her. Do not care about Smokey protecting his friend

  • while this was loading i was thinking to my self "this has to be sung by flo ,it must be. nobody would but diana on this song"but unfortunety i was wrong. Really wrong

  • Sounds like a try-out for the high school glee club. Sorry, Diana.

  • Absolutely!!

To sing this song it would take a person (female) with a strong voice. This Diana truly lacked. Florence Ballard should led this and networked with the Vandellas on this number for additional vocals (with Diana & Mary).

  • I totally agree. I don't even like the instrument arrangement even that is boring. If they had Flo on lead with an instrumental very similar to the original this would have been one of their best recordings rather than their worst

  • Absolutely, one thing Motown realized but in my opinion failed to capitalize on:

    1. Florence Ballard was a singer and a very talented one at that! Motown (Berry Gordy) was highly aware but his interest for Diana overshadowed this and her and Mary got relegated to performing background work only. This became more evident as the group became more popular.

    2. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas were singers first and entertainers second, this was the total reverse with the Supremes.

  • That's why I LOVE them live BUT I still think it was dumb to have Diana on this song, it wasn't like they were releasing it as a single. In my opinion it ruins The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland album, they should either have changed the arrangement so it would have the sound of the original and have Flo on lead or just leave it off the album altogether.

  • Lets be realistic on some issues:

    1. The song "Heatwave" was made a classic by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Motown was highly aware of this and should have respected as such. This classic should have left alone.

    2. If Motown was going to let the Supremes attempt to record this, Florence Ballard should have been given the lead. Her voice in quality was far more comparable in nature than that of Diana whose vocals are no where near that of Martha Reeves or Florence Ballard.

  • They really should have left it alone if they were going to have the instruments like that LOOL.

No wonder The Andantes are on the backing as well as Mary and Flo - they probably couldn't keep themselves composed as I know I wouldn't be able to stop laughing watching Diana record this.

  • As well as amongst other things that may have been floating through the minds. They probably would have found this to be somewhat entertaining to watch and be around!

  • I dont really care for this song either... More than likely Florence wasnt there when they recorded this being as though she missed many recording sessions..but anyway thi sisnt the right material for The Supremes or Diana

  • This is a cute version but nothing beats the Martha and the Vandellas version....Diana Ross' voice doesn't nearly match the power and emotion of Martha Reeves!

  • Well I think Florence(Blondie)Ballard was one hell of a singer. It was not her fault that she was given material that didn't suit her voice. But this version can't touch what Martha & the Vandellas did with it regardless of whoever would've sang lead. It's not all that bad to me, and I still do like their version of this.

  • Flo could have SAAAAAANG this song. Diana should never have been given this song, maybe HDH just wanted to have a laugh LOL. I could imagine Martha Reeves listening and thinking "what kinda shit is this!" ROFL. I don't even like the instrument arrangement, something more similar to the original would have been better

  • i can't tell you how true all of that is! flo should have song this but of course it was ALL DIANA.Martha sung these so much better. especialy when she goes "yah yahh yah yahh"

  • haha ha that's funny but sooo true martha would have definetly been like wtf is this and i agree flo should have sung this

  • continued! Like you Babe is great but the other material is bad, it probably wasn't her fault but I cannot believe that she would have wanted to have a record cut with that version of It's not Unusual for instance, some really bad choices of songs, that unfortunately were not probably even hers.

  • Rolsvt just stop!!!! maybe you might not like flo's voice and thats your opinion but I know I do and alot of other people do too so..Enough Said....

  • Florence Ballard should have led this song..

If you heard Flo in Ain't that good news. She would have rocked this song

  • I don't know why everyone thinks that Flo had such a great voice. If you have her The Supremem Florence Ballard album which is a mixture of her stuff after the Supremes and her leads whilst she was with them, most of the tracks are really bad.

  • please die a violent death with you and your whole shit eating turd family bitch

  • Well lets take at some of the material that was selected for her. She is not singing at nowhere near her raw natural capability. She needed the right producers and the right staff who could have sustained her. She would ultimately been as successful as Diana Ross but she would not have wanted to tour as often as Diana did during the early days.

  • First of all look at the arrangements and the quality of the work that was given to her. God knows if she would have hooked up with the right producers, she would have been equally successful to that of Diana. She did not have the right producers or personnel during that time that could have sustained her!!!!

  • Flo lacked something very crucial to solo success ... and something Diana had in spades ... it's called STAR QUALITY.

You either have or you don't.

  • They belleive it because Lady Di even said Florence had this amazing voice. Her material that would have suited her vocal power was too far away from what Berry Gordy wanted for his Supremes. All of Flo's peers even said Flo had the voice.Diana had and still has one of the most unusual voices to ever been recorded and was the new sound of the genration.Flo's was closer to what was already out there in soul.

  • I love the Supremes but this was a mistake I think, they are just not as soulful as Martha and the Vandellas. I wasn't really into the Vandellas before even though I have a few CDs of them but lately I have been listening to them and they are a lot grittier than the Supremes, Gordy was really trying to make the Supremes appeal to the mass market and they were not as soulful as the other girl groups like the Vandellas, Velvelettes and the Marvelettes, What do you think?

  • go fucking drive off a cliff with your whole prick family in it bitch

  • this is a bad version - mary flo and the band sounds bored like there not even trying

  • The Supremes sound cute but this is definitely a Martha and the Vandellas standard.
