  • Susan Boyle did NOT bring me here, I Patti Lapone, and then Lea Salonga did. They are all so much better then her.

  • Still Patty L .......song

  • `very nasal. not too pleasant! Give me Subo any day. Or Lea Salonga!

  • Too affectation, commercial ...

  • whiney

  • not much appeal to me

  • gottahavethesparkly and Ithek

    must be very famous singers

    who know everything about

    Singing technique?

No this is perfect and beautiful

  • I personally don't think Susan Boyle is that amazing but if she brings people to the beautiful musical Les Mis that's great... there are other stunning songs so check them out too!!!

  • What other songs?

  • My faves are "On My Own" "Little fall of rain" "Do you hear the people sing?" and "Castle on a cloud" If you put them into Youtube they'll come up!!

  • Cheers, I shall watch them now.

  • Susan Boyle brought me here from Turkey.

  • Susan had considerable disadvantages when she sang on BGT. No. 1: she was nervous and singers know that nervousness reeks havoc on the vocal cords. No. 2: the audience applause drowned out her lower register and made it appear weaker than it really is; notice ruthie loses volume also but no applauding over it. Susan's CD will be awesome because these 2 factors will be removed.

  • We must remember that 47 y.o. Susan's voice is untrained. She hasn't had the advantage of a younger woman's vocal range and perhaps lessons (I don't know this for a fact...assuming). I think she did quite well considering the atmosphere..

  • Ruthie Henshall was in fact 40 when recording this, so not that much younger than Susan Boyle. Regarding lessons, Ruthie says she has only had literally a handful of private singing lessons in her life, although obviously with the ammount of experience she has, she will have received coaching during rehearsals. Even so though, a phenomenal natural talent, and a true triple threat - she is a fabuous actress, and find some old videos of her dancing!

  • No one has EVER sang this song better than her!!!!!! She sounds amazing still!

  • Who was included into the Dream Cast for the 10th aniversary? Ruthie Henshall as Fantine... :-)

  • *** Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here! ***

  • Susan Boyle brought me here from Japan.

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here Lovely singer, wonderful version.

  • *** Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here! *** I totally agree with you, IrishSpring444.

  • *** Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here! ***

  • *** Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here! ***

Imagine Susan Boyle's God given voice, with the training that Ruthie Hensall's received ... and there you'd find perfection ...

  • *** Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here! ***

  • *** Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here! *** from Seoul, Korea. Amazing song...

  • Susan Boyle brought me here from Manila, Philippines. A pretty good version, also.

  • Best version I've heard! I love Julia Murney's version too!

  • *** Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here! ***

  • she isnt bad... very trapped nasally though

  • Now THIS IS the best version of this song it I've heard!!!

Beautiful, beautiful voice...even if she does sing through her teeth...lol

  • best

  • Copy and paste if Susan Boyle brought you here

  • Who cares if she sings through her teeth, she still sounds fab!!! Ruthie is awesome =D

  • I think she has a really good voice, but her rendition doesn't move me like some others. Her performance just seems to be technical, not emotional.

  • I agree. Glad someone else noticed that too.

  • this is really good! my only quarell is that she sings with her teeth clenched together...

  • There's something about her voice I don't like

  • adore her xx

  • Not bad... Very good voice, although somewhat strained at times.

  • Such a tragic story, but I love it to itty bitty bits!

  • what an expressive eyes she has, very nice singing

  • Excellent.

  • you can't fault her for singing through her teeth sometimes.

    LISTEN TO THAT VOICE!

  • ok love Ruthie but whats with the wierd 80s drum beat in 2006

  • She is a great singer but I like Lea Salonga's version better. Lea gave more emotions and power to the song.

  • her version is my favorite of all...

  • oh wow, I agree. MUCH richer and fuller. she's awesome :)

  • Her voice does seem to have got more complex. Pity this is a recording of the tube instead of off the airwaves.

  • hm i think lea is great as fantine

but i like fantine better with ruthie henshall's voice

it's got a sort of age to it "knowing the hardships" maybe?

    like fantine

  • Best Fantine EVER!

  • You might want to listen to Lea Salonga's rendition of the same song in the channel of badabing24601. Type badabing24601 on the youtube search bar. Ooops, or just click Lea's face on your right!

  • I wonder if she ever considered opening her mouth when she sings. Every video of hers that I have seen she doesn't really open her mouth. She would be much better if she did.

  • You don't have to open your mouth wide to sing well btw!

  • You get a richer more full sound when you do open your mouth more. And I mean that you should open your mouth tall not wide. I mean come on she is singing through her teeth especially on that last note. It would be so much better if she actually opened it.

  • Thats ridiculous, watch some opera singers sing out of the side of their mouths, and Ruthie obviously hasn't got a large mouth. It looks fully open to me and produces a lovely sound, I have seen her live many times!

  • Your're right there are many opera singers that sing out of the sides of their mouth, but that doesn't mean they are good. And if you look at a lot of this video she is singing through her teeth. especially when she is finishing a phrase. Look at :47, and then and 1:00 through 1:06. I'm not saying she is bad or anything but I think it would help her if she she opened her mouth. There are a lot of times during this vdieo where her teeth are together.

  • lthek -- sound is not produced in the mouth. The richness and resonance is produced in the sinus cavity and the back of the throat. Still, thre are pleaces where she could open her sound more.

  • I know what you're saying, but usually when you open your mouth like with the eee's and stuff, you're supposed to do it in sort of a smile. And that would've taken away from the character, even if it would've added to the actual voice. Besides, she's the famous one here not you. ;]

  • Yep, because the famous people are all smarter than all of us. Paris Hilton.

    Riiiight.

Fame has nothing to do with actual talent or skill, man. An episode of American Idol ought to tell you that.

And actually, it depends on your style. Musical theatre often will, because the sound is sharper, but in operatic style, you don't do that because it closes off your sound and detracts from your vocal tone and power.

  • And this is theatrical style. Its a broadway showtune. Are you just stating facts to make yourself look smart or what? I don't get your point.

Paris Hilton hasn't made a profession out of performing. Its not her life works. She isn't a thesbian. Most people on broadway are prolly ten times as talented as you are. It takes a lot of talent to get on broadway. Broadway isn't television or radio. Its a completely different scene.

  • And I never said she was smarter, just that she's the one making the money. So you can critisize her all you want, but she must've done something right. ;]

  • yes but we are talking about musical theatre here hun and if you haven't got talent, you wouldn't have the rep on broadway that ruthie has. When you're famous for your amazing voice and have millions of viewers then talk to me about fame and talent.

  • So what?

  • Actually, if you watch her singing on the 10th Anniversary concert DVD, she opens her mouth quite a bit, but the sound coming out doesn't change much

  • It's this sort of 'emoting' and stylised singing that gives musicals a bad name. not for me.

  • wow. The absolute power. She brings so much into the song. The expression that she puts in makes me cry. Goose bumps seriously. Absolutly amazing.

  • her voice has developed so much over the years! she sounds really really good. i love ruthie! :)

  • I don't like the added orchestration that makes it like...pop-ish. but ruthie's still incredible and the best fantine.

  • she's without a doubt THE fantine. she even look exactly like victor hugo described her in the book when she has the blond wig on. she's incredible.

  • She's not only the best (by far) Fantine ever, but also one of the most beautiful female voices I've ever heard.

  • have you heard saralouise1989 sing this? - for a young girl her voice is red hot! chek it out.

  • I don't like the odd, almost slow dance-y feel the drums give the song. but she is amazing, as always.

is this from the sound of musicals?

  • Oh Ruthie is the best BEST Fantine ever

  • My all time favorite Fantine.. although I haven't seen Lea Salonga's version.

  • Her version is still better than Lea's

  • have you heard lea's version yet? where?

  • She is ABSOLUTLY AMAZING! My all-time favourite Fantine. Gorgeous to. Her voice is so rich! she amazes me! UNBEATABLE! She conquers everything. Her hubby Tim Hower is great as well. Great musical couple. She's the only Fantine (in my mind) who plays her perfectly, unlike most who play her WAY to angry!

  • simply amazing.

  • this woman is brilliant. nuff said

  • i love ruthie shes amazing anyone could learna thing or two from her!

  • i agree with 2006thomas. the best fantine ever.

  • I've herd this song 100s of times and she still sends shivers down my spine!

  • I love Ruthie Henshall ive seen her in 3 musicals and she just rocks whatever she does! I agree her voice sounds wellbetter here than on the 10th Anniversary recording!

  • Ruthie is AMAZING!

  • i was so lucky to get to see ruthie as roxie in chicago, unfortunately i didn't realize how fortunate i was. but i do remember thinking she is amazing, and this vid just proves it. i wanna get the 10th anniversary dvd just for her!

  • in my opinion she still sounds as mesmerising as she did 11 years ago.

  • the added beat and horn solos make this sound like a sexy song sung in a jazz club...aside from that - i agree, she does sound better than the anniversary concert.

  • wow she still looks really young....

and omg she's not a blondie!!

and omg her performance is even better than 10 years ago... i haven't heard another fantine that gave this song so much emotion as she does...

  • Ruthie owns this song. The best Fantine ever.I have a hard time picking between this and the 10th anniversary version. I hope they release this on DVD soon. Ruthie is amazing!

  • Absolutely fantastic - the only Fantine in my eyes. Ruthie Henshall is simply unbeatable x

  • Yes absolutely unbelievable. I saw her do this live. Amazing.

  • what a great, emotional performance!!!! so much better than the youtube of "IDAD" by the original Fantine

  • ...why've they added an odd beat in the background? That takes away from the song :/ But yes, Ruthie is f**king amazing.

  • awewsome performance! she truly is fantine...pure and simple..thanks for the posting

  • Dang this song gives me shivers

  • its a wig on the 10 annuversary concert!lol! knockerz89

  • lol oh i no! id have to be blind not to see that was a wig, but she does look better as a brunette or maybe i should her natural hair is better than that ghastly wig

  • Ruthie is truly my fave Fantine ever... always sends shivers up my spine!

  • OMG most beautiful voice ever!

  • Ruthie Rocks! The Best Fantine EVER! She's amazing, u can just see the emotion in her eyes spes when she sings 'but he was gone when autumn came' and at the very end :'( So Sad! I agree she sounds much richer here than at the 10th anniversary concert but she totally rocked then too and she looks so much better brunette lol.

  • i love this song i just wish you had the whole song

  • i remember watching this on tv and when i heard her singin downstairs i ran down the stairs as fast as lightening and divebombed onto the sofa, i just love ruthie henshall!! AMAZING!

  • Wow... She looks better as a brunette, too. Beautiful. Simply breathtaking.

  • I love her voice. That nasal quality adds something.

  • her voice is spell bounding! the amount of emotion she puts into fantine is unbelieveable - she makes her so vulnerable that i think we sometimes sympathise with her TOO much! she is amazing!

  • I love her voice! She is so gorgeous, too!

  • GOD.. hse's just so amazing

  • i'm sorry but on almost every clip of a female broadway singer there's mention of that person playing elphaba. i'm sorry but i just don't think wicked is the best musical ever and, personally, i like the roles that ruthie has gotten better than elphaba(i'm a fan of lea salonga's other roles too). hehe...that's all.

  • It's really because Wicked is so new. Really there hasn't been a new musical that features not just one but two female leads. That's probably why you see it so much.

  • my favorite fantine of all time. i adore ruthie.

  • She's wonderful ... the best Fantine I've ever heard. Her voice is so full of emotion, it's amazing.

  • I completly agree she sounds so much richer she was recently in woman in white in the west end, I wish i had been able to see it

  • she's still the best fantine in all the world!

  • She would totally rock as Elphaba!!!

  • Hey Dude, Thanks. she is brilliant. I missed her in Les mis by one week! I ended up seeing Claire moore in 1992. Ruthie is in New York at the moment. Her husband is Tim Howar- Roger in Rent. I really hope she gets offered elphaba in Wicked!

  • Is she expected to get offered Elphaba?!?!

  • no but she would sound amazing and look great green!
