Boerboel is by far the best. I like German Shepherds, but the Boerboel was bred for only one purpose, protection of its home. Check them, they're beautiful animals, just very expensive.

Oh, plus 1sowlid, Australian Cattle dogs were meant to take the kick in the head by a bull! They could weigh up to a ton; a German Shepherd dog would absolutely need a vet after getting a kick from a cow. German shepherds are strong and big, yes, but ACDs have a much stronger BUILD. My cousin has one and it's almost impossible to hurt that dog. Once he got bucked in the chest by my cousin's ram, and he got rammed in the chest by his ram!

Actually, larger dog breeds may NOT hurt children. I am a children (XD) and I have an English Mastiff. Of course, he's uber submissive, sweet, and lovable and I'm bigger than him, but to smaller kids he has never knocked one over. He can get excited and jump, but he's very gentle with kids. Also, silverponylover999, very true! I have a doxie mix and he's bitten me (in play, however) a lot more than Chief (well he's never bitten me before but still)

Some people might want a bigger, stronger dog like a livestock guardian breed and some might want something faster like the Rhodesian Ridgeback, or they might want a more silent guard like a Maremma or Boerboel.
btw, all cattle dogs combine all those thing you said anyway.

@1sowild You've never met a true working ACD. They are much tougher than your regular pit bull or GSD. They are solid like wood yet fucking fast and strong. I know this because I've met a lot. Especially my uncles old retired ACD.
It was old and retired yet could still run for miles. Not to mention i ran over its head a few times with a quad. Run over your GSD's head with a quad and he'll need the vet. GSD's may be heavier but that isn't everything, look at labs, they are heavy yet very weak.

I live in a rural area and in front of my house is a truck stop and behind my house is a reservoir so wild animals are abundant i have 3 cats and my family needs a dog we are very active like to hike, fish, camp. We are looking for a dog that is big strong and is protective because of the animals and drunk and unstable people that like to wander near our home from the truck stop i worry for my little sister and father. Any suggestions for a good dog in this enviroment?
@1NecroSpawn rotties are good but the downside is that they bark at the slightest of things like someone pissing from 4 blocks away, they would hear that and not shutup and since u live near wildlife that would be enhanced by a lot. i wouldnt recommend getting a fully grown dog of any breed, they wouldnt be used to wild animals being so close and thus bark non stop. get a puppy and raise it to be used to its surroundings so u wont have that problem. i would recommend any of the shepherd breeds.

@silverponylover999 This is so very true! I have two labs, both around the 90 pound range, and two house rabbits. The rabbits boss the dogs around and never have the labs tried to hurt them. As a previous pet store employee, and an avid animal lover and long time owner, I can say it's the smaller dogs that are more likely to bite, and be unstable. Blame the owners, not the breed! And it sounds like your little Rottie had a good life! They're awesome dogs.
Or get a securty system which is probably more effective. The dog can be triked with meat. If you get an alarm with cell backup, unless they get a jammer and cut the lines, police will be there. And if you dog hurts him, he might sue you
@bestSVMS Depends on the dog. Mine are not food motivated (but you can distract the police in my area with some bbq). The person would not be able to sue me over my dogs bite as he would not be breathing. The beauty of the Kangal, Caucasian Ovcharka, and my mixed guardians is that they don't leave a threat breathing. You have to train the dog with rewards other than food. Use toys & affection.
Okay, um... No. In general, good breeders wouldn't really want to sell their dogs off to be a guard dog. Why? Because good breeders know that guard dogs usually end up being outside most of the time defending a tree instead of being inside with the family. Also, puppies should leave the litter at EIGHT to twelve weeks old, NOT seven.
Also, if you're so desperate for a guard dog... Buy a security system. It's cheaper and you don't have to walk, feed, or train it. Don't buy a dog as a commodity.
@Rayzser I get what you are saying but there are several Livestock Guarding breeds that actually prefer to be outdoors. Good livestock guardian breeders will sell adult (trained LGD's) often. These dogs have been with livestock since puppyhood & prefer the company of the herd. If you are looking for a pet & not a guardian, then I get it.
Well that's a totally different lifestyle compared to putting your dog in the backyard as an ornament to 'guard' a tree stump. Animals that live on farms were, as you said, bred into the life, but one should never ignore the fact dogs still require social stimulation.

Oh, plus 1sowlid, Australian Cattle dogs were meant to take the kick in the head by a bull! They could weigh up to a ton; a German Shepherd dog would absolutely need a vet after getting a kick from a cow. German shepherds are strong and big, yes, but ACDs have a much stronger BUILD. My cousin has one and it's almost impossible to hurt that dog. Once he got bucked in the chest by my cousin's ram, and he got rammed in the chest by his ram!

I know that they used to do that, and they still do. But if you ever get an Australian Cattle Dog, punch and kick it in the head. Notice how it couldn't do anything. A German Shepherd would probably yelp and lunge. I've met a German Shepherd before, and she's a police dog. When she started to chew on my rubber shoe I slapped her on the head, and she yelped. When Rocky was chewing on the same shoe, I slapped him on the head and he just looked at me.

Trust me, i have had REAL German shepherd who did attack work with little to no training, and when they attacked, the best thing to do was surrender, because fighting back only made them even angrier and fought harder.

Actually, larger dog breeds may NOT hurt children. I am a children (XD) and I have an English Mastiff. Of course, he's uber submissive, sweet, and lovable and I'm bigger than him, but to smaller kids he has never knocked one over. He can get excited and jump, but he's very gentle with kids. Also, silverponylover999, very true! I have a doxie mix and he's bitten me (in play, however) a lot more than Chief (well he's never bitten me before but still)

@1sowild Not really. It depends on what you want. Some people might not want a guard dog that barks constantly. Here you are, again. Saying GSD's are the best. Not really, it depends on where you live, what you want etc.
Some people might want a bigger, stronger dog like a livestock guardian breed and some might want something faster like the Rhodesian Ridgeback, or they might want a more silent guard like a Maremma or Boerboel.
btw, all cattle dogs combine all those thing you said anyway.

@bluegama500 I agree to a point, maybe some people have different needs for different situations, but overall, the German shepherd is the best COMBINE ALL guard dog. BTW, not all cattle dogs can do what the GSD can do,, they are good, no doubt, but the GSD is in a class of its own.

@1sowild Yes the GSD is definitely one of the best dogs for guarding and police dog work. But i think ACD's can do a lot better when it comes to police dog work. Mostly because they are stronger, faster and have a lot more stamina, so basically physically superior.

@1sowild You've never met a true working ACD. They are much tougher than your regular pit bull or GSD. They are solid like wood yet fucking fast and strong. I know this because I've met a lot. Especially my uncles old retired ACD.
It was old and retired yet could still run for miles. Not to mention i ran over its head a few times with a quad. Run over your GSD's head with a quad and he'll need the vet. GSD's may be heavier but that isn't everything, look at labs, they are heavy yet very weak.

@m1shadow unfortunately though it is hard to find a working, healthy german shepherd with no health defects in its bloodlines because of the over breeding this breed has faced. thats why these days the most superior guard and protection dog is the dutch or the malinois which is basically the same thing only a little smaller. people will say its the doberman but really they are awkward and nothing compared to a well rounded shepherd. the best watchdog however would have to be a bullmastiff.

i heard that WATCH dogs are typical small dogs because they bark A LOT at anything unusual, so they warn you of "danger" but do nothing about it or try to, but they're tiny so... :/
GUARD/PROTECTION dogs are big, loyal (very important), strong, agile, quick to react, smart and brave.
people jump to the conclusion for the German Shep. (i used to have one, but she died as a puppy) but that breed is not the only one, some are just unpopular but just as great, like the akita inu, they're great !

@lovlyanime the reason why i said watchdog and not guard dog because guarding to some people may also refer to protection and i didnt want to confuse people. of which the bull mastiff would not do well in PP because its far too heavy and quite frankly it would be considered over kill and thats why police dont use them as it would be police brutallity. the reason why the gsp has been so favored is due to it being exceptionally well rounded, not typically excelling in anything in particular.

I live in a rural area and in front of my house is a truck stop and behind my house is a reservoir so wild animals are abundant i have 3 cats and my family needs a dog we are very active like to hike, fish, camp. We are looking for a dog that is big strong and is protective because of the animals and drunk and unstable people that like to wander near our home from the truck stop i worry for my little sister and father. Any suggestions for a good dog in this enviroment?

@1NecroSpawn rotties are good but the downside is that they bark at the slightest of things like someone pissing from 4 blocks away, they would hear that and not shutup and since u live near wildlife that would be enhanced by a lot. i wouldnt recommend getting a fully grown dog of any breed, they wouldnt be used to wild animals being so close and thus bark non stop. get a puppy and raise it to be used to its surroundings so u wont have that problem. i would recommend any of the shepherd breeds.

The german shepherd is especially good with the kids and also very protective. My mother-in-law has a small breed dog ( jack russel) and it's not really good with the kids, it nips.

@silverponylover999 This is so very true! I have two labs, both around the 90 pound range, and two house rabbits. The rabbits boss the dogs around and never have the labs tried to hurt them. As a previous pet store employee, and an avid animal lover and long time owner, I can say it's the smaller dogs that are more likely to bite, and be unstable. Blame the owners, not the breed! And it sounds like your little Rottie had a good life! They're awesome dogs.

Or get a securty system which is probably more effective. The dog can be triked with meat. If you get an alarm with cell backup, unless they get a jammer and cut the lines, police will be there. And if you dog hurts him, he might sue you

@bestSVMS Depends on the dog. Mine are not food motivated (but you can distract the police in my area with some bbq). The person would not be able to sue me over my dogs bite as he would not be breathing. The beauty of the Kangal, Caucasian Ovcharka, and my mixed guardians is that they don't leave a threat breathing. You have to train the dog with rewards other than food. Use toys & affection.

Okay, um... No. In general, good breeders wouldn't really want to sell their dogs off to be a guard dog. Why? Because good breeders know that guard dogs usually end up being outside most of the time defending a tree instead of being inside with the family. Also, puppies should leave the litter at EIGHT to twelve weeks old, NOT seven.
Also, if you're so desperate for a guard dog... Buy a security system. It's cheaper and you don't have to walk, feed, or train it. Don't buy a dog as a commodity.

@Rayzser I get what you are saying but there are several Livestock Guarding breeds that actually prefer to be outdoors. Good livestock guardian breeders will sell adult (trained LGD's) often. These dogs have been with livestock since puppyhood & prefer the company of the herd. If you are looking for a pet & not a guardian, then I get it.

Well that's a totally different lifestyle compared to putting your dog in the backyard as an ornament to 'guard' a tree stump. Animals that live on farms were, as you said, bred into the life, but one should never ignore the fact dogs still require social stimulation.
