I remember watching this and was smoking lots of Opium myself back then. I watched this ending over and over again, and am convinced DeNiro really did smoke Opium. You can see his eye iris go from dilated to pinned and glassy-eyed. They didn't edit the ending clip after he takes the hit. It's a long shot that doesn't cut away. Being filmed in 84, they didn't CGI. So I think it was real. He got high. Look at his eyes closely. you can't "act" that.
Another tragedy of this movie is the story of James Hayden, who played "Patsy" Goldberg. He died of a drug overdose 2 months before the movie was released. He was also a good friend of Al Pacino, who tried to get him the role of "Manny" in Scarface. He did "Once Upon A Time in America" instead. He died b4 the premiere. Remember the scene when he shoots the guy in the eye on a diamond buy? He said "kid's stuff" then shot him?
Mickey Rourke dedicated 'Pope of Greenwich Village' role to Hayden.
I've seen this monumental work several times. In the theater, the butchered release for tv, had it on VHS, now DVD.. time for the Blue Ray. It's every bit as compelling a story as the Godfather Trilogies. The cast is outstanding. The story weaves in and out of fantasy and reality. After the endless ringing call and the trip to the opium den, do we really know if what we see is reality? By Noodles being consistent an opium user, do the events actually take place as presented? Questions...
@HuckToohey In my opinion, that is possible, but I don't think so, because the fact that Noodles went to opium den is not the point of the movie and is not so important. In this movie, so amazing movie, the point is that this is his way of thinking and his way of living through out all his life. The last scene, his smile, expresses it, I think. It is not the negative meaning, not at all,but it is the positive meaning, absolutely.
I watched this movie the first time in the late 80s. Though I was only about 13-14 then, I loved it. But it has been years since viewing it. Only recently did I pick it up again and viewed it again. Boy what a different story it is as a full grown adult. And I never really understood his smile at the very end, but now I know that he realised that his friends weren't dead after all.
This masterpiece was shredded, spliced, diced and cut so many different ways, as to make it unrecognizable in a theatrical setting. Buy the dvd and watch all 225 glorious minutes.......AND NO BATHROOM BREAKS ALLOWED!

@ChainsawingRico , opium. There were Opium Dens in New York City all during Prohibition in the 1920's & for decades before too. I don't think it became illegal until the late 30's(?), as heroin & opium were used often in those days. Either through opium dens, or the doctors themselves. Even cough syrup was pure elixir back then.
@Evolinag , I thought this movie was the best I'd ever seen at 15 when it came out. Luckily, I didn't see it in theatre's as the original release had almost half of it cut out. The studios thought a 3 hr 40m film would bomb, so they cut it down to 2 hrs 15m. Huge mistake.
Rent both versions & u can see why Hollywood puts out so much garbage. They let a small handful of jewish exec's make all these edit decisions. Hence the rise in indy films the past 20 yrs.

So the whole thing is unfolding with inevitability and he cannot save his friends but he made his decision and he can get away now - he always knew it would end in blood when he came out of jail but he was poweless to stop it all. "It is just the way he chooses to see things" and in reality it is Max that must "Live" with the guilt...
@xaxie1 I haven't watched the movie in a while, but to me the significance has always been that atm he appears to be the only one that survived (all the others perished) and even though they know he must be alive, he hasn't got to the station to see the money is gone, and he is free from that life of crime. However, to me and probably many its that deeper meaning "dream state"; all being a dream (in regards to playing it at the end of the movie) where possibly he imagined what all happened after

@robistodrobi The way I see it the ending is back in the past, right after Noodles forced Deborah. He realized what he had done and left his old life. He found himself, he found God. He cannot forgive himself, that's why he smokes opium, so he can remember the old days when they were children, when they were untouched. I have a very personal interpretation of the movie but in my opinion this scene and the previous scene where Max dies/gets killed are related because Noodles has always been
@robistodrobi living in the past. The scene where he walks away from senator Bailey's house he sees a car full of young people who are enjoying themselves. This is the moment where Noodles realizes his life has been pretty much over ever since he was imprisoned. They, the prohibition gangsters, are no longer relevant. They are dinosaurs. They have no place in the new America, because they are a disease, and as said earlier in the movie "Some deseases it's better to have when you're young."
Great movie. The music is just so haunting. Who was the actor who played the limo driver who was driving when Noodles raped Deborah? For some reason, I just could never forget his single act of refusing money from Noodles to take Deborah home.
@Depotmaster You didn't get the movie at all... "What have you been doing all these years?" - "I've been going to bed early." He did not become an addict.
@scouser96100 lol nah, ur not alone! This is a really emotional movie, especially with Morricone's musical score, it becomes haunting. After u devote 4 hours to a movie like this, u can't help but to shed a few tears for Noodles and Max and Deborah.
@239677nico why should you be insulted? i think it means it was all a noodles's dream, beacuse of the crap he's been smoking. so, thinking about it, he smiles
@239677nico Its not complex as it was all a dream. When noodles ruins max's plan and ends up with max getting "killed" he felt so guilty for his betrayal that the only way to escape his guilt was with opium.Max also loved Noodles,in the end when Max discovers how Noodles betrayed him in order to save him,Max is seized with guilt in the figurative death of noodles by opium,he kills himself.Their stories parallel eachother showing their true friendship and how they dealt with their friend's death.
@magnumsynderella whoa, I've seen this movie maybe 10,12 times & I honestly don't see how u came to that conclusion.I can agree with the Opium dream theory but how and when did Noodles die?And when did Max mourn Noodles and then kill himself?I don't remeber any of that.Max was a selfish prick who felt nothing 4 Noodles (my opinion) He disappears in a garbage truck at the end. I'm not trying to be a jerk or criticize u, I'm just wondering if u could explain to me your theory a little more please
@32mrmanic1 , are u saying u think DeNiro's ending opium scene meant the whole movie he dreamt? No way. Noodles carried guilt the rest of his life, until he's an old man he thinks all 3 are dead. When he smiles, it's cuz opium does that to you. It makes u forget ur troubles & focus only on good memories. U could be ready to kill ur wife, but take 3 hits of opium & you're no longer mad. The garbage truck was Max's co. Did he have an employee pick up his corpse after he shot himself?
@32mrmanic1 thanks, you are welcome. I nearly cried when i figured out why noodles went to the opium bar and wasted his entire life there. I wished i had a great friendship like max and noodles had that my friends would kill themselves if they ever wronged me.lol
@239677nico To me it means that everything was a complex Opium dream.Ya,it's kind of a strange, elaborate film trick (like Jacob's Ladder) but for me it works. Noodles betrayed his friends, thought that they had died as a result of his actions & the only way to deal with his guilt was by smoking Opium (which is just as potent as heroin,if not more- leading to vivid, lucid dreams). in his head, he dreamt everything up (I'm guessing) to make himself feel better. That's why Max doesn't die @ the end
@239677nico To me the end means following: a lot of tragedies may happen. But if you just can not cary that burden - take a break, relax and then the life will be going on. And Noodles smiles in a minute of break - in total dischord to the cruel reality he is living in.
FUCK ALL THE AWARDS SHOWS..THEY DONT KNOW SHIT FROM SHINOLA...THERES ALOT OF MOVIES THAT NEVER RECEIVED AWARDS THAT WERE GREAT...SO FUCKEM..AWARD SHOWS ARE ABOUT AS LAME AS AMERICAN IDOL
@alxmir23- I think they forgot to enter the picture before deadline other wise I think we all know who would have won hands down, they just don't make em like they used to now all you get is a bunch of remakes that don't come anywhere close to the originals
This is real acting, you don't need words, everything is clear, you can read from his moves and his face what he feels. Robert the best! Music is something that just can make you cry. And director Sergio Leone made a masterpiece.
@goldyn12345 , how could it win an Oscar? It wasn't about the Holocaust!
Plus, Hollywood purposefully ruined both this movie, & Michael Cimeno's 'Heaven's Gate' by chopping over 1 hr off the film. The critics destroyed both movies in the papers, & yet both were edited by force by Hollywood exec's. Both movies are considered 2 of the 'best movies ever made' now that the original "Directors Cut" was released.
Rent both versions of OUATIA & see the hatchet job for yourselves..
No matter what the jews try to do in holywood the best movie on all possible worlds has been made once and for all from an italian. Sergio Leone is the GOD of cinema and Enio Moricone is the GOD of music. This story proves that life is merciless. But heroes go forth and face it. Even when they stay alone they still go and love until the end.
@AkaMouTinn , I totally agree. Ever since the jews have clamped down racially on Hollywood, almost everything made is junk. It blows my mind that even crap movies spend $30-40 MILLION! This movie made by Italians was amazing. The cinematography by Tonino Delli Colli was epic. Too bad jewish exec's ruined it, many say on purpose, by editing it from 226 min down to 130 min. Over 1 hr 30 min cut! Can u imagine chopping that much? They did the same to Cimeno & ruined his 2. F'in jooz!
This is the one and only film, that i suggest everybody, who ask me after an important movie. And the dramatic of this scene is: The only one time, where his free smiling in all of the 4 hours .. and all time of his life ...and the reason is only: drugs let him forget all the reality. Dramatical and the most of sadness. (Sorry for my bad english)
Next time we send a space probe to e.t. life forms, this movie has to be on board!! ..with a few other ones!! A milestone in the history of movie making!! I love it! Thanks, Leone!!
i have no words to express about this movie.i was totally lost in another world.new York should have stop in this time period.thats why i still love Brooklyn.because comparing to time changes Brooklyn hasn't change that much.anyway we never gonna get a actor like Robert DE niro.
This reprisal of "Deborah's Theme", with the lone soprano voice, makes my spine tingle.
One of the most heartbreaking and perfect final scenes ever committed to film.
Over twenty five years since I first saw it, this film still haunts me. I would have to say it is my all-time favourite film and that it defines the word 'masterpiece'.
No words, only music and great performance of De Niro , acting without words isn't that easy. And in this long scene he expressed his feelings in best way. That is russian style of acting , like Stanislavsky or Michael Chekhov. You can see on his face everything. And his moves explain what bothers him. That is art. And this scene can help young actors to see what is secret of acting. (Secret of acting is truth! ) :) Just look at Roberts face... Great!
This masterpiece of art is so underated, maby if this was 10 yrs older or younger it would of got what it deserves like a few oscars. great acting and music to conclude.
amazing..... how deep is this..... just listening and watching..... how moving.... how spontaneous and how sad as Noodles ends up in he opium den..... what a man is Robert de Niro........mmm how i adore that man xxxx softy lizzie xxxx
How comes Fat Moe has so weak a communication with his sister, that he does not know something devastating happened between her and Noodles? Or, does not even know she has had an affair with Max? Hasn't ever met her child and noticed the recemblance? How did Max rise to political prominence, without ever heving his picture in any paper read by either Moe, Noodels or Eve? How could persons like Deborah and Max put up with each other for decades?
Sergio Leone himself admitted in one of the interviews before his death that this scene was some sort of hallucination which opium users are frequently accustomed to..He alluded that the movie could be interpreted as hallucination..For more information, read on Wikipedia..
This scene takes place immediately after max's "death" on the docks with the others. It jumps back in time at the end of the movie to show what he did after that. He had lost everything that meant anything to him, max, his friends, and especially deborah. He was a alone due to his own choices, Very sad.
I just watch this movie over and over again. And it is case with all Robert De Niro movies. Just can't get enough. It is bad that Sergio Leone didn't win oscar for this movie.
I remember watching this and was smoking lots of Opium myself back then. I watched this ending over and over again, and am convinced DeNiro really did smoke Opium. @scouser96100 lol nah, ur not alone! This is a really emotional movie, especially with Morricone's musical score, it becomes haunting. After u devote 4 hours to a movie like this, u can't help but to shed a few tears for Noodles and Max and Deborah.

@chef4cook This is his finest performance. Ditto James Woods. Both great actors.

Great how there is no dialogue in this final scene, thus making it transcend language.

All right well could anybody explain to me what does this ending actually mean?
I liked the movie, but i just don't get the sense of this scene (please no insults)
239677nico 9 months ago
@239677nico why should you be insulted? i think it means it was all a noodles's dream, beacuse of the crap he's been smoking. so, thinking about it, he smiles
tommydp89 8 months ago
@239677nico The film begins in a opium smoking room. An so it ends.
All the events that happen throughout the movie could be the visions from an altered mind. Maybe it's all a dream...
blackbird4280 7 months ago
@239677nico Its not complex as it was all a dream. When noodles ruins max's plan and ends up with max getting "killed" he felt so guilty for his betrayal that the only way to escape his guilt was with opium.Max also loved Noodles,in the end when Max discovers how Noodles betrayed him in order to save him,Max is seized with guilt in the figurative death of noodles by opium,he kills himself.Their stories parallel eachother showing their true friendship and how they dealt with their friend's death.
magnumsynderella 7 months ago
@magnumsynderella whoa, I've seen this movie maybe 10,12 times & I honestly don't see how u came to that conclusion.I can agree with the Opium dream theory but how and when did Noodles die?And when did Max mourn Noodles and then kill himself?I don't remeber any of that.Max was a selfish prick who felt nothing 4 Noodles (my opinion) He disappears in a garbage truck at the end. I'm not trying to be a jerk or criticize u, I'm just wondering if u could explain to me your theory a little more please
32mrmanic1 7 months ago
@32mrmanic1 , are u saying u think DeNiro's ending opium scene meant the whole movie he dreamt? No way. Noodles carried guilt the rest of his life, until he's an old man he thinks all 3 are dead. When he smiles, it's cuz opium does that to you. It makes u forget ur troubles & focus only on good memories. U could be ready to kill ur wife, but take 3 hits of opium & you're no longer mad. The garbage truck was Max's co. Did he have an employee pick up his corpse after he shot himself?
GrassyKnollTrolls 1 week ago
@magnumsynderella wow, I didn't at first understand what u were saying but then I reread what u wrote and it does make sense. Nice.
32mrmanic1 7 months ago
@32mrmanic1 thanks, you are welcome. I nearly cried when i figured out why noodles went to the opium bar and wasted his entire life there. I wished i had a great friendship like max and noodles had that my friends would kill themselves if they ever wronged me.lol
magnumsynderella 7 months ago
@239677nico To me it means that everything was a complex Opium dream.Ya,it's kind of a strange, elaborate film trick (like Jacob's Ladder) but for me it works. Noodles betrayed his friends, thought that they had died as a result of his actions & the only way to deal with his guilt was by smoking Opium (which is just as potent as heroin,if not more- leading to vivid, lucid dreams). in his head, he dreamt everything up (I'm guessing) to make himself feel better. That's why Max doesn't die @ the end
32mrmanic1 7 months ago
@239677nico To me the end means following: a lot of tragedies may happen. But if you just can not cary that burden - take a break, relax and then the life will be going on. And Noodles smiles in a minute of break - in total dischord to the cruel reality he is living in.

This is real acting, you don't need words, everything is clear, you can read from his moves and his face what he feels. Robert the best! Music is something that just can make you cry. And director Sergio Leone made a masterpiece.

this should of got an oscar
goldyn12345 11 months ago

AkaMouTinn 11 months ago 4

This reprisal of "Deborah's Theme", with the lone soprano voice, makes my spine tingle.
One of the most heartbreaking and perfect final scenes ever committed to film.
Over twenty five years since I first saw it, this film still haunts me. I would have to say it is my all-time favourite film and that it defines the word 'masterpiece'.
pandaeyes42 1 year ago
No words, only music and great performance of De Niro , acting without words isn't that easy. And in this long scene he expressed his feelings in best way. That is russian style of acting , like Stanislavsky or Michael Chekhov. You can see on his face everything. And his moves explain what bothers him. That is art. And this scene can help young actors to see what is secret of acting. (Secret of acting is truth! ) :) Just look at Roberts face... Great!

This masterpiece of art is so underated, maby if this was 10 yrs older or younger it would of got what it deserves like a few oscars. great acting and music to conclude.

How could persons like Deborah and Max put up with each other for decades?

first time in the whole movie you see him smile. I'm still wondering why,. this film is an enigma, an experience, a masterpiece
phille22 1 year ago
This scene takes place immediately after max's "death" on the docks with the others. It jumps back in time at the end of the movie to show what he did after that. He had lost everything that meant anything to him, max, his friends, and especially deborah. He was a alone due to his own choices, Very sad.
