Epic. Although somewhere in the 80's they did a replication with mathamaticians as participants and did not obtain these resultst. So maybe this effect is not as much present anymore (since the replication was conducted about 30 years later, and individualism is stronger now). Or maybe mathamaticians are just more sure about their perception of lines.

I was part of the same experiment in grade 7. The grade 10 psychology was doing experiments on my grade 7 class. It wasn't my peers sitting beside me it was grade 10 students. I failed the first time but the second time I got up and took a closer look at the cards and used my finger to measure the lines and corrected the other students. They ended my test after the next time cuz I started asking questions. As it turned out more than 3/4 of my class conformed to what the older students said.

If you have become aware of your own subconscious fears and chosen to not accept those fears, group pressure is almost nil and making your own choices becomes second nature. Using the written response instead of the oral response eliminated the cause of the social fear, and naturally produced a larger honest result. It is an important survival component, and it is necessary to do the 'homework' of finding out what in your mind is controlling you through unconscious fear to survive as a species.

how ever this study is not amazingly correct, due to it one being andocentric, so only male participants were used, and two all the participants were white americans so it doesnt speak for women, blacks or other cultures.The participants used are also college students, so therefore they are also off a certain level on intelligence =) really interesting study thought, just a shame they cant really do it anymore with out being unethical =( .

its interesting when the naive participant gets a friend and conformity drops down to 18 percent really interesting =) and also how when the guy who privately writes down his answer conformity again drops due to the lack of public humiliation =).

Christianity uses this to recruit...often duping you into going to a church event with them for some reason and where everyone proclaims some love for fake god or jesus, most non-believers will go along with it just to fit in. After time (depending on how weak the mind is) the non-believer will start to believe it and become brainwashed, eventually doing his/her own part to unconsciously help recruit new members later.

I have a Bachelors' degree in Psych and I was taught a complete false history of Psychology. These types of experiments are never spoken of, Bernaise is never spoken of, MK ultra is never spoken of. The history of lobotomies, the chemical lobotomies occuring now, and the fact that the entire field could not survive without government or pharmaceutical financial support thus being a complete conformist to government or pharma agendas.
