I remember watching this on BBC2 as a child. Spellbinding how it brings the claustrophobia and fears of the submariner to life.

Submariners of every nation share a common bond and knowledge of sudden death. Whilst the Nazi regime was detestable many of the men in the Kreigsmarine were not ie Captain Langsdorff or Werner Hartenstein.

They deserve respect.

As for the movie, I couldn't agree more. My father was on board a Fleet Destroyer from 1942 - 1945, his ship sunk several U Boats. Yet he had respect for the German crewmen and he loved this film, said it showed the horror of what these men (not Nazis, but sailors like him) went through.
