Is this how carbon monoxide poisoning happens? i.e. crud in the system gets hot enough and you suck it down as poison gas? Happened to one family I know three times and almost killed them off.
Real duct cleaning should cost between $50 to $75 per vent(for home air systems - commercial is a different pricing structure) and around $200 to clean the AC/Heating unit. You should be told this ahead of time.
When you are on the phone, looking for a duct cleaner, ask if there are any additional charges when the men get there. Will they charge for removing the vents, do they clean up afterwards, do they lay down plastic to protect your floors.
Are you in Southern California? Do you think your air ducts or your dryer vent need cleaning? If it's been more than a year for your dryer and more than 3 - 5 years for your air ducts, you're probably correct.
Dryer vents can be a serious fire risk so don't wait on that one. We can come out and usually clean it within an hour.

Yeah, but cutting a hole in the duct work seems like a hard sell to a home owner...how do you overcome that when you bid jobs?

Hi AT,
So sorry we didn't respond to you before. I didn't see your comment until now.
Not hiring this second but the new owners may be looking for employees. Are you trained at duct cleaning or were you looking at being a helper?
Thanks for writing. Do let me know and I'll turn your info over to the new owners!
