"Traditional" involves holding the sticks marching band style (snare, specifically). Some people play better open handed but are still right-handed. It's being comfortable, not restricting yourself to only a certain way (unless you are in a marching band, then you kinda have to). If you are comfy, you play better, more dynamically, and with more groove (a flow so to speak). If playing open handed is the most comfortable for him, then so be it.
