Actually, wouldnt the "lag" help a lot?? No one wants a viewer-distracting jerk of the focus. And when you consider how much still-photography lenses "breathe", this will reduce the appearance of it by moving slowly.
He use a sail winch servo. They do a 3,5 times rotation, but are pretty slow - thats causing the lag. I would recommend an other motor for this that much faster.
Please share the design. I like how smooth the response is.
