I have been listening this song since I was 16 years old (now I am 36). His voice became even better nowadays. This songs spund better when is played from C. First version I heard was from E (or E#).
dear lenny, i feel like you are my friend even though i`v never been lucky enough to meet you,
when i was at one of your concerts i loved every minute, i can honestly say i have never enjoyed a better night, although you did make me feel inadiquate, i was in aww of you that night and still am, you are an amazing guy, god bless you
I am a french Canadian and i always cry like a baby when i hear this song. The first time i watched the dvd my girlfriend asked me why i was crying. I answered that even if i translated the lyrics she could not understand. The spirit of this song goes beyond the lyrics and music; it speaks straight to the soul.
If you like the lyrics to Leonard's songs, then you may very well like KOZMIC DREAMERS, whose artistic vision and expression defines them as one of a kind. Buy one of the songs or poems on iTunes
One musician, poet, human being who gave an continue to give me a great deal of happiness! He is all what I used to listen while going to university everyday!
My favorit poet und singer songwriter all my live is and was L.C. When I was 17 in 1972 I had only one tape, and I listend only L.C songs Suzanne, Marianne, Lover, Lover, Lover,....In honor of these songs I called my daughter Sus(z)anne... and she is a little bit like this Suzanne and I love her soooo,..... Everytime when I listen songs form my poet it makes me happey and my live is good.... Thank you so much
I heard this when I was ten...and my older sister was going to woodstock.....and joan baiz was going to be there....singing his songs......I lieaned all of the......I love him more now that I know he was the one writing them.........love you
@oesaki OK, if you insist (and because I honestly cannot think of another great storyteller in the music industry...at least one that is as good as Cohen). I do enjoy Tom W, though.
This is only one of his songs that I love. He stretched out to us with his beautiful person poety wit and fun. We went to Him in Ireland 2010. I felt I was in the presence of somebody that had reached bliss. An Irish fan
I am a huge Leonard fan, but this is one song that others have done better. Number one version is by Neil Diamond. Now don't start throwing things at me you Leonard groupies. Just do yourself a favor and listen to Suzanne by Neil Diamond
@johthor For many years, the Neil Diamond cover was the only version I knew, and I always LOVED it. So beautiful. But now that I know more Cohen and I have seen several of his performances of it, I love those too. There's nothing like the creator's own presentation of a song. Cohen songs get better ever times you hear them or read the lyrics because of the poetry. He paints such rich, inspiring pictures with his words.
This DVD is simply amazing;) I wish all experienced musicans were as much honest, climatic and got as wonderful, cleaver sense of huomour and self-distance like Mr Cohen;)
Ah the 60"s!!All those influences,Bob,joan(diamonds and rust),donovan(atlantis),zager and evans(in the yr 2525)5th dimension(aquarius).kojak(youtube.com/kopterkojak,cdbaby/cd/kopterkojak/soldier)
This is amazing song in many ways one of my favourite is that he sings this like you were near that girl XD even i didn't do that i an imagine that with girl i love ^^ :3
If you love Leonard Cohen, and surrealistic symbolistic lyrics, you’d like my music too. He’s one of my two great musical heroes. I made a song called "A Winter Evening's Tale”. This is also for all of us folks facing 2011. Do check it out in my channel or check it out in the video response of this awesome video. The song references Pilgrim's Progress, bible, Alice in the wonderland, Revelations, crusades etc. It also depicts eerie classical paintings. Have a folky new year!
Love the imagry in this song; that's the only part I remember of it from when it first came out. Luckily, later in my life, I learned more about Leonard Cohen's music and he's one of my favorite songwriter/singers.
I too am crying. I witnessed his gracious gift in Portland two nights ago. Although I sat among thousands of strangers, I was there, with only him, his band, and the most beautiful woman I've ever known. She shared we me this man's lifework and purpose.
I know now that part of mine, is to love her. And I will, evermore.
@downingr2 - YES! The song is evocative of a youth long gone - But how wonderful to see a man in his 70's still bringing his poetry and music to the world in this way. Indulge your precious memory and listen one more time...
Always been a favorite. I learned part of it on guitar, and I've broken out my harmonica trying to play the tune. This song has always spoken to me...
This beautiful poetry never grows old. It holds the mirror, even without the tea and oranges he touches me with his mind and his words. Makes you realize what is important.
too much leonard cohen is like too much pink floyd - they are musical genuises who make you FEEL, but you'll end up melancholic and you'll miss out on that girl you really want in life if you don't stop to remind yourself of that....and that will be a terrible cycle to get stuck in.
Tonight he´ll play here in Stockholm. Listening for one more time before I´ll get
to the fifth consert i will see. That´s my song - Suzanne - my real name - he will sing it just for me tonight . Now I´ve got to go! Meet you Leonard !!!
@kidneybean43 Ok, so jews didn't exist before 1948? Please take your stupidity away from Cohen videos. And from the face of the earth also, if you like.
@kidneybean43 Actually, this is so stupid. Why are people fighting over jews? Everybody knows (yeah) that 'jew' is, besides from the religious aspect, a cultural attribute, that you have to be born into. Please stop.

What? This jewish fossil the poet of century?? Ha ha!! He is one more talentless jew who has been promoted by the jewish system! Subculture, jewish bullshit and stolen stuff! If he gave to the hitler any flowers, the Fuhrer would tell him to turn into plant food, because he sucks as an artist!!

Besides this jew would be amusing in working camps and maybe less jews would commit suicide! Spat with you?? No way! You can not even state an argument! For example you can not prove the jewish holocaust!
@theo9952 - antisemitic racist jimis1821, being devastated that greece had such a collapse, that he's taken to listening to the idiotic ramblings of moronic talentless Jimmy Panousis
@Jimis1821 because you're clearler so cultured as a human being, that you can write lyrics of the same calibur. Lyrics like Hallejujah, Democracy, Closing Time. You clearly have no concept of musical genius. Promoted by the Jewish system? Wow ignorant propaganda. And since he won The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award this year, your opinion (as with most ignorant racists) is very pointless. Oh and Jewish isnt a race, its a religion. And if you wasn't ignorant, you'd know Cohen is Buddhist.
Being Jewish is not a race because Jews do not share one common ancestry or biological distinction. People of many different races have become Jewish people over the years. The original Jews were Hebrew, Judaism was there faith. If you can be a black jew, a white jew, a russian orthodox etc how can you be the same race?
it's a complicated process to turn carbon into diamond, there are a lot of circumstances that catalyzes somehow carbon into the proper direction to diamond, to cut things short, Leonard found a shortcut, I think because he is a diamond made out of carbon
Vercet1, should you live so long, some day you also will be a "gramps" but you will never have his talent or the insight to appreciate it. I am sorry for you.
I was rushing through my day and accidentally happened upon this beautiful song by Mr. Cohen. As if by magic, I was deeply touched. My whole day will be more meaningful and special because of it.
My name is Suzanne, i remember my dad used to sing me this song when I was a baby... this is a beautiful song!

over the past 100 years people have started converting mainly to religions that were not their fathers....
before then, jews would marry jews, christians marry christians ect....you can be a black jew, but not be off the jewish race
its a dodgy debate, but there is a Jewish race
look it up;P

it's a complicated process to turn carbon into diamond, there are a lot of circumstances that catalyzes somehow carbon into the proper direction to diamond, to cut things short, Leonard found a shortcut, I think because he is a diamond made out of carbon

He reminds me of Bob Dylan - both are brilliant songwriters and poets and don't have great voices. But somehow I like Dylan's voice better.

Vercet1, should you live so long, some day you also will be a "gramps" but you will never have his talent or the insight to appreciate it. I am sorry for you.

we're doing a version of this song for winter guard and I love it. This is very different but I like it.

I was rushing through my day and accidentally happened upon this beautiful song by Mr. Cohen. As if by magic, I was deeply touched. My whole day will be more meaningful and special because of it.
