I couldn't see their relationship as more than a bromance. As ADORABLE as they'd be, I just cannot see them like that. Doesn't mean I won't "d'aww" over all the fan art/fic of the two though.
oh my gosh!! John isn't Jealous!!! the sexual tension between Sherlock & Irene is sooo strong, its make him get hot & maybe want to take a cold shower, Have u people been there??
If u haven't, test it on someone with another person in the room!! argh!!!
I don't think John's jealous - I think he just feels left out - like in Harry Potter whenever Harry feels awkward about any romantic tension between Ron and Hermione!
I think john knows there's something going on between this two more than just the two's amazement of each other because he knows Sherlock more than anybody. That's why he suggested a baby name for them. Not because he's jealous. well that's just me.
Oh I laugh every time I watch this. John has to remind them that they are not the only people in the room (they clearly forgot about him). Was he afraid that they would start tearing off each other's clothes in his presence?
Whether people see it as a bromance, romance or whatever, I think we can all agree that there relationship is a special one and something that has been a pleasure to watch.
Although on a personal note...I do ship them as a potential couple.... :) Only because of A Scandal in Belgravia...the hints were just none stop!
Although I don't ship Sam/Dean because that's just incest...
@TheGirlgamer3 Shipping Sam and Dean Winchester is all kinds of wrong. Sometimes you have to let bromance be bromance, and that is, without a doubt, one of those times :-)
@MsDanioDanio From a progam called 'Supernatural'. It's about two brothers (two very sexy brothers) figthing supernatural beings and generally saving people from things like ghost, vampires, trolls etc. Very good series. Has a huge following!
But love is a weird, completely illogical thing, and as ridiculously romantic as that sounds, it's not about the shape of one's genitals. John and Sherlock have a very deep relationship, and one that in my opinion exceeds the term 'friendship'. And if John doesn't get married or moves out, I can see it naturally turning into romance, because of how much they have come to need each other - enough to be jealous and possessive. Because John totally is.
lol. Now other people are getting into the debate and "essays". But I'm not doing that anymore. YouTube limits people's posts too much anyway. I prefer using this for short comments, not actual discussions.
I'm gonna be stupid and poke my nose into this heated debate XD In my opinion John and Sherlock have some kind of romance going on, but not kisskisshughug like. It's more like a strong bond between them, deep friendship they have. By this i'm trying to say that I can't imagine them having some kind of sex relationship but their love for each other is even stronger. I really love their friendship. It's very unique one.
@SunShinesToday The "unique" aspect is what real slashers are looking for in their slash, that deep bond and devotion. There are many preconceptions about it, but I can say from experience that it is not about sex at all, it's much deeper and relates to the personal search for the perfect partner. The characters are men because this symbolizes "equality" in our society, it's just easier to play those roles. And yes, the core is a true friendship. Romance means to be connected in all ways.
@SunShinesToday Exactly what I think. I can't see them kissing and doing couple stuff like I could with like Merlin and Arthur from Merlin. Sherlock and John have a much better bromance
@tehaguiar Really? You cleared it up? Because I think what happened on the show proves otherwise. And I DO think Sherlock loves John in a platonic way. And if that's the case, why can't he love Irene too in a romantic way? He can have both of them.
"It’s a kind of love story. It’s about two men who love each other and need each other, and don’t even necessarily want to need each other. They sort of drive each other up the walls sometimes, but they’re absolutely two halves. (…) And [John] comes back to London and finds himself with nothing and nobody, really. And Sherlock is alone, they find each other… (…) They complement each other very well. They each bring something to this relationship.”
@tehaguiar -shrugs- I don't disagree or have a problem with this. It's true. They do need each other. They do help each other. And no matter what, they do love each other and would do anything to save the other. But once again it does remind of the relationship of Sam and Dean on Supernatural. That show is really heavy on their relationship as well.
Sherlock and John's relationship is much more than romantic, but it's not a brotherly bond. It doesn't matter what people say, but NO ONE will ever convince me that these two men don't love each other. It doesn't matter if it's platonic or romantic. They love each other and their relationship is the most important thing in the show.
@tehaguiar YES, THEY DO LOVE EACH OTHER. I AGREE. I think Sherlock and John can still have the great relationship that they have, but also have some romantic love in their lives too: SherlockxIrene and JohnxWhoever. I don't expect there to be much romance in the show, but it would be nice if Irene returned every now and then and her and Sherlock had some moments.
I guess people will just ignore the blinding subtext. But, never fear. It'll never happen, in this modern day series, no matter what would happen if they were opposite gender. Homophobes. At least I know that I can sleep, knowing ALL Love that seeks not to physically harm another (unless they want it) is beautiful. Not that I'm saying you don't feel that way, I don't know ya.
Everyone has the right to opinion, but, do not even try to say, if they were the opposite sex, everyone wouldn't know where that was going. So, like in Gabrielle and Xena (which, once again, while should have been obvious, and, would have been were they male and femail, and not needing to have been explictedly stated after the show, they, yes, they were being portrayed as LOVERS, not just platonic soulmates. Phh.)
ONE AND ONLY difference. You guessed it. And there are hundreds of examples so, please, just shut up up, I've had to deal with my kind of people, gay lesbian, not being given equality in books and movies since I was pre double digits, sitting there thinking, why, crying My eyes out.
Of course, if it was a straight couple, like bones and booth, or, mulder and scully, you wouldn't even need to debate it, cause, they would have been making moves, though so, SO slowly, towards fully joining together, in sexual bliss and all that, but, I guess thats just innate homephobia as always, at work. Example; Starsky and Hutch, Bones and Booth. The parrallels are unmistakeable.
Listen, you can say whatever you like about her their love is so profound that it trancends all bounds, not even needing to be romantic (which, by the way, would exclude it from being purely 'brotherly', either) but, it this was a man and a WOMAN, no would be even trying to say they were anything other then what they were; the love of each other's lives.
@0lonepanther0 If it was a man and woman the characters would be different and therefore their lines and interactions would be different. If John was a woman he wouldn't be saying and doing the same things that he does. I see Sherlock and John's relationship to be more like brothers Sam and Dean on Supernatural. There were a few instances where people on the show assumed they were a couple as well. The show was just having fun. But I know there are people who ship them as slash too. >_>
@maxkitty223 I agree that Sherlock and John love each other. I agree that they have a very strong and close bond. BUT, I'm just stating that I don't see their relationship as homosexual, as some other people do. They're a great duo. A great team. And they will always continue to be. But I also see the chemistry, attraction, and what could be LOVE between Sherlock and Irene. And John is interested in and attracted to women. That doesn't mean that him and Sherlock can't have the bond that they do.
@TheLastSoul when I read the books I loved the relationship between Sherlock&John, but I never saw it as a romantic one. I'm reading them again now, after watching the series, but I still think it's the greatest bromance ever told. I also think that what Sherlock saw in Irene in the books is actually quite open to interpretation, so one can read it as they prefer (I think Moftiss did the same pretty well).
@maxkitty223 you're taking Martin's words literally and out of context. He said that to explain that Sherlock and John met when they needed each other the most, that they completed each other, but that doesn't automatically imply they're romantically involved. Real friendship is one of the purest forms of unconditioned love.
@maxkitty223 I know, I read the same interview. Since the text has been posted, you could see exactly what I mean :P
[ Before I get attacked again just because I don't put "romantic shipping" before everything else in the shows I love I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, I am just trying to point out that things aren't only black or white not even in the interviews :) ]
@annabelSPNlover Platonicism is a myth, get over it. The people who invented it had bad relationships with their mothers so they thought love was a lowly thing.
@slendersail I think slash sort of gross, purely because I like to respect characters and their sexual orientation. If Holmes or Watson were gay, fine, but they're not. And honestly, I'd prefer to watch a show with two straight best friends of the same sex going about their business without all the random claims to them being attracted to each other. God knows Gatiss and Moffat stick in enough gay jokes already!!!
@annabelSPNlover That's cause u only found the kind of slash that *doesn't* respect the characters. Is usually written by very young girls. Mature slash respects the characters' souls and their perfect mates - that bond which is more important to them than anyone else in the Universe (i.e. anyone in the book or show). As for Holmes/Watson, remember: they're not real! They are invented and as such they ARE how you want to see them. The premise of these "best friend" shows IS soulmateship, tho.
@annabelSPNlover So in other words, you're way off the mark when you label it "random claims". It's the farthest thing from random that can ever be. What's "random" is all those other partners getting stuck in, to say that Holmes & Watson are not as married as they totally appear. But I would inquire what you mean by "their business", because this is the central issue. What do you see their "business" as being? Solving crimes?
@TheLastSoul That's how you see it, but you need to remember that behaviour often conceals what's really going on, and humans are often clueless even when it happens to them. The show portrays a deep attraction which just becomes a fact in and of itself, whichever way the two try to conceptualize it. Oftentimes, the very thing we thought we disliked ("boring" etc) disguises the most special person we can ever meet - a true partner. Subtext is fun, yes, but it is also an important lesson.
@0lonepanther0 And sorry, but I do think the person you claim to be the love of your life is someone you have romantic feelings for. If not, then you're just talking about someone you're very close to that you have a very strong bond with and has become your family.
I don't think John is jealous. At least not in a gay way, if that's what other people are implying. If he's jealous, it's probably just more in a third wheel kind of way, because of how Sherlock and Irene are pretty much in their own little world there. I think he just finds their interactions weird, because of their personalities and how they act toward each other. It's not exactly normal flirting, and both Sherlock and Irene aren't exactly normal people. So he thinks it's strange.
If Watson had been a female in this scene a lot more people would have naturally jumped to the conclusion that Watson WAS jealous in a love interest sort of way. And Irene is a lesbian in this series, so what does that make this scene?
This series constantly addresses the homoerotic tension that often exists between John and Sherlock in a very open way, because they were there in the books. Constantly dismissing them BECAUSE it's gay is not really a good enough answer
@koishiou I don't think they have "homoerotic tension". I think their relationship is more brother-like. But the series obviously does like to joke around calling them a couple. I think it's more just something they play around with for fun, not to be taken serious. And Irene can claim to be a lesbian, but she obviously has feelings for Sherlock. What John said was like someone telling two people to "get a room". That doesn't mean jealousy, it means he can see the attraction between them.
"Brotherly" love can't be a little ambiguous at times? Everyone interprets the actions of characters differently. I'm not exaggerating when I say that there are books written on the subject of Sherlock and John's possible gayness, based both of the original canon and other series, like this one. Whether that's the case, in my interpretation, John looks a little awkward and uncomfortable, and is trying to reinsert himself with his quip. In my experience it looks like jealousy...
@koishiou Well, John IS the king of awkward moments. lol. That's just what he does. It's part of his character's comic relief. "Trying to reinsert himself with his quip" - I see why people think that. But again, it could just be the "third wheel" feeling. Although I think it's more of him just wanting to pop in and acknowledge the awkwardness, because that's his personality. Acting awkward. John actually seems more glad than jealous that Sherlock has taken interest and shown feelings for Irene.
@tehaguiar Yes I've seen the episode. Several times. He didn't seem bothered. He seemed surprised and awkward by it because it was unusual for Sherlock. But throughout the episode he seemed more worried for Sherlock because he knew he had feelings for Irene and knew that Sherlock didn't know what to make of it. He talks about it in his blog too, and he doesn't sound bothered by it. He sounds interested that Sherlock is actually interested in a woman, because he didn't think he could be.
@TheLastSoul I'd have to ask you to watch it again, because he did seem bothered. Rewatch it and look at his face, and tell me if he ever smiled thinking 'oh Sherlock/Irene? Nice', because he didn't. The scene in this video is just a reflection of it. He didn't know if Sherlock had feelings for her or not, and in the end, Sherlock didn't. Irene, even in the books, is written by the fact of the "challenge" she represented, but never as the woman he fell in love with or grew feelings for.
@tehaguiar Okay, now who's acting like they never watched the episode? Sherlock clearly displayed feelings for Irene throughout the entire thing, but at the end he still wanted to win. He still wanted to beat her, because that's how he is. And the very end with Sherlock with Irene's camera phone and his flashback of him saving her. He obviously cared and still had feelings for her. Several adaptations have Irene as his love interest too. And John did know. He talks about it in his blog.
@TheLastSoul So you admit that you act as if you haven't watch the episode? Be careful with the words you use, mate. I'm not talking about the other adaptations, I'm talking about the book. John says in the book that Sherlock never loved her, but saw her as a challenge. Also, she fled with her husband in the books, so my argument remains.
@tehaguiar Adding one more thing: Both Moffat and Gatiss are faithful to the books, since they are huge fans of Conan Doyle. Sherlock and Irene's relationship wasn't love, and they didn't indicate it like that. When it seemed like it was, it turned out that Sherlock was checking her pulse, and not reciprocating her feelings.
@tehaguiar No I didn't admit to acting like it. I was merely referring to your words making it sound like I had not seen the show, when you are acting that way yourself. We are both interpreteing things from the show in completely different ways. Although I think John Watson himself would agree with my statements, since he has pretty much already said the same thing in his own blog.
@tehaguiar The show could be basing things off other adaptations as well. I mean it's obviously not completely based off the original books. Irene didn't flee with any husband. And John in the show actually did (or does) think Sherlock feels something for Irene. So there are differences.
@tehaguiar And yes, Sherlock saw her as a challenge, but he did show interest and feelings for her too. He was attracted to her, but it was more than that. He kept her camera phone, he kept all her texts to him, he kept tabs on her whereabouts and tracked her down to save her, most likely killing or seriously injuring her would-be executioners in the process. And when he said "The woman...THE woman" at the very end, the way he emphasized "the" sounded as if he was saying she was the one for him.
@TheLastSoul "I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position." - A Scandal in Bohemia.
@tehaguiar I've read that on Wikipedia. But who is to say John really knew how Sherlock felt. And I don't know why you keep quoting from the old books. If you actually read John's blog he talks about how Sherlock felt something for Irene. You're just ignoring it.
@tehaguiar I could say the same thing about you. You can interpret his expressions your way all you want, but to me John acted sympathetic toward Sherlock all throughout the episode, not upset because he wants Sherlock for himself. But clearly people are going to see it differently.
@tehaguiar And John did seem amused when he realized Irene was texting Sherlock. He gave a small smile there and even a small smile when he saw Irene sleeping in Sherlock's bed So no, he didn't seem "bothered" by it. I think the rest of the time he's frowning because he's either being sympathetic, stunned, or weirded out.
@TheLastSoul Oh my god! No he didn't! When she was naked, he felt uncomfortable. When he saw Sherlock's new ringtone, he felt annoyed and uncomfortable, I even quote: "I'm not stupid, you know". When he discovered that she was alive, he got angry at her because she flirted with Sherlock. Then, there's the scene in this video that he feels left out and bothered. To me, you're just seeing the episode the way you want to because you can't accept that John might have feelings for Sherlock.
@tehaguiar Okay, now you're being completely blind and ridiculous. How could John NOT be umcomfortable with Irene naked? SHE WAS NAKED. Good God, how could you not see the awkwardness with that? And about the ringtone, he seemed curious, and then amused, not bothered. And yes he did smile in those instances I mentioned. And he wasn't angry at her for flirting with Sherlock, he was angry at her for letting Sherlock think she was dead and how depressed he was over it.
@tehaguiar I don't think the lines are referring to that. Sure, Irene made that comment about the punching, but John just seems to not know what to do or how to react due to her very distracting nude body. I still see this scene as a man acting awkward because a naked woman is in the room. I didn't get the impression that "exposed" meant jealousy if that's what you're implying. I interpreted that as....welll, a man feeling exposed in the presence of a naked woman.
@tehaguiar He seemed irritated when he found out she was flirting "at" him because it was something so silly. It set him off when he was already angry. His anger had been building. He wouldn't blow up about her flirting just for that. And I think YOU'RE the one seeing the episode the way you want. John does have feelings for Sherlock. They're close friends. But you're the one who can't comprehend the characters and scenes. With John, all you've got is "he looked bothered".
@TheLastSoul Because FROWNING is the expression of BEING BOTHERED BY SOMETHING. BEING SURPRISED is "lifting your eyebrows", "open mouth" and AWKWARD is when you DON'T KNOW HOW TO ACT. That's why John was BOTHERED and not "surprised and awkward". Really. I'm an illustrator, I know how character expressions ARE, for God's sake.
@tehaguiar You've said John acted bothered the whole episode regarding Irene, but I've pointed out things that contradict that. You're trying to turn John into this jealous, possessive person and I don't think that's what he is. If he was, why would he smile in the instances I mentioned? Why would he talk about Sherlock feeling something for Irene so loosely in his blog? Why would he go out and leave Sherlock and Irene alone together in 221B for 2 hours? Your frown evidence just doesn't add up.
@tehaguiar I don't know how amused means bothered. If you claim it's not romantic love that John feels for Sherlock, then I don't know why he would be upset about it.
@tehaguiar You have recieved many replies. I don't even know what your comment was, so I feel the need to say, chin up, it gets better! People stop replying once the comments are buried deep enough! I think. Anyway, good luck with that.
@TheLastSoul I'm not sure, but I think I hit the thumb down comment before I hit reply? Sorry. Also, it's only fair you get to say what you want too haha. :-P
@TheLastSoul What are you saying? The whole Irene-talk with John was for the sake of a joke? I don't think so. She was telling John that she could have feelings for a man even though she was a lesbian, like he didn't need necessarily to be gay to have feelings towards a man. I find such a pity people blocking these types of possibilities just because they have closed minds. Anyway, I didn't ever get the impression they felt like brothers towards each other. Their chemistry isn't like that.
@tehaguiar I'm not saying that someone claiming to be straight can't have feelings for someone of the same sex. Although in my book that would actually make them bi. I'll admit that I don't ship or support slash pairings. It's not my thing. But with Sherlock and John, I don't see any romantic or sexual feelings between them. They are two men who care about each other a lot, but have personality clashes. How could they not? They live together. They fight. I can't picture them "getting together".
@TheLastSoul No, no, I'm not saying that it's romantic. But it's not a brotherly bond either. Sherlock and John's relationship is too huge to be considered romantic, it's so much more than that, they obviously love each other. It's not about them hooking up, it's about how much they need each other. And I even quote Martin Freeman: "It's kind of a love story." Do you know what I mean? I don't think I can even put their relationship into words. It's complicated.
@tehaguiar Well I call it "brotherly" because they are two men who care about each other a lot, but have personality clashes and bicker and get on each other's nerves. And they live together. So they're like family. Almost like siblings. When someone says "love story" most people would assume romantic. But I don't, won't, and can't see them as romantic or a couple. I DO think they need each other. And since I don't see their love/relationship in a slash way, I see it as a brother-like bond.
@barbaro267 Well we are in a day and age where being gay, bi, or lesbian is becoming more accepted and people are more open about it. And people should be able to be. I'm not against that. People should be able to be who they are and be with who they want. But in this case....I think it has more to do with slash shipping becoming increasingly popular in the fandom world. It only irritates me because I don't think Sherlock and John feel that way. I'm not for sure of course but I highly doubt it.
@tehaguiar i don't think @TheLastSoul was saying it was a joke. just that relationships are open to interpretation and they've interpreted sherlock and john's relationship as more brotherly or a platonic love. there's nothing wrong with that. that doesn't mean that they're closed minded. it's just that that's simply how they feel. why is is necessarily being closed minded when it comes to opinions on how characters are portrayed and felt by viewers. readers can read the same book n come to diff
@lephong I was saying that Sherlock and John as a couple is like a running joke on the series. They do poke fun at it. They're always making it into a comedic moment. John himself even jokes about it, which I don't think he'd do if he had serious feelings for Sherlock like that. But I'm not saying gay/bi/lesbian relationships are a joke. I would never think that. But those moments on the show are meant to be funny. And they are.
@tehaguiar (contd) comclusions. it doesn't solve anything to argue about different opinions as it's not likely that either party will be able to convince the other person otherwise. so why don't we all just enjoy the clip w/o arguing about it. let's be civil and move on. we're all mature adults who simply enjoy the show.
@lephong I apologize for so many posts and burying everyone else's. I really don't like to use YouTube as a message board. Especially for debating. Me and tehaguiar are clearly very hard-headed and passionate about what we believe and support :P, and we have completely different interpretations. I am tired of the arguing though. I've said what I wanted to say. I've made my points. Which is all I wanted to do. Not convert, just share my opinions. And I've done so. So back to enjoying the clip! :D
@SweetHarlequin Yeah, I've seen that. But I don't really like the name Nero Wolfe. I mean it's kind of cool and interesting, but it sounds so fake. There have been so many different adaptations though. I found a page that was like a list of the Holmes family tree. It said Sherlock and Irene had three kids together, and one of them was named John Hamish. It *would* be sweet if they named their kid after him. Can't say I'm quite fond of Hamish though. lol.
@TheLastSoul to me Nero Wolfe sounds like a superhero :P (well...Sherlock and Mycroft seem fake names to me too lol XD)
I think I also read something about the fact that the vowels in Nero Wolfe and Sherlock Holmes appear in the same order, but this reasoning resembles fandom speculation imho :P
Yeah, Hamish would be sweet <3, but I don't know if I like it or not. Well, if your uncle's called Mycroft I think "Hamish" really isn't that weird after all.....

Yes, John is straight and Sherlock asexual.

SunShinesToday 1 month ago 4
@SunShinesToday The "unique" aspect is what real slashers are looking for in their slash, that deep bond and devotion. There are many preconceptions about it, but I can say from experience that it is not about sex at all, it's much deeper and relates to the personal search for the perfect partner. The characters are men because this symbolizes "equality" in our society, it's just easier to play those roles. And yes, the core is a true friendship. Romance means to be connected in all ways.
slendersail 1 month ago
@SunShinesToday Exactly what I think. I can't see them kissing and doing couple stuff like I could with like Merlin and Arthur from Merlin. Sherlock and John have a much better bromance

Martin Freeman on Sherlock/John:
"It’s a kind of love story. It’s about two men who love each other and need each other, and don’t even necessarily want to need each other. They sort of drive each other up the walls sometimes, but they’re absolutely two halves. (…) And [John] comes back to London and finds himself with nothing and nobody, really. And Sherlock is alone, they find each other… (…) They complement each other very well. They each bring something to this relationship.”
tehaguiar 1 month ago 3
@tehaguiar -shrugs- I don't disagree or have a problem with this. It's true. They do need each other. They do help each other. And no matter what, they do love each other and would do anything to save the other. But once again it does remind of the relationship of Sam and Dean on Supernatural. That show is really heavy on their relationship as well.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago
Sherlock and John's relationship is much more than romantic, but it's not a brotherly bond. It doesn't matter what people say, but NO ONE will ever convince me that these two men don't love each other. It doesn't matter if it's platonic or romantic. They love each other and their relationship is the most important thing in the show.
tehaguiar 1 month ago 5
@tehaguiar YES, THEY DO LOVE EACH OTHER. I AGREE. I think Sherlock and John can still have the great relationship that they have, but also have some romantic love in their lives too: SherlockxIrene and JohnxWhoever. I don't expect there to be much romance in the show, but it would be nice if Irene returned every now and then and her and Sherlock had some moments.

Phh.)

0lonepanther0 1 month ago
Listen, you can say whatever you like about her their love is so profound that it trancends all bounds, not even needing to be romantic (which, by the way, would exclude it from being purely 'brotherly', either) but, it this was a man and a WOMAN, no would be even trying to say they were anything other then what they were; the love of each other's lives.
0lonepanther0 1 month ago
@0lonepanther0 If it was a man and woman the characters would be different and therefore their lines and interactions would be different. If John was a woman he wouldn't be saying and doing the same things that he does. I see Sherlock and John's relationship to be more like brothers Sam and Dean on Supernatural. There were a few instances where people on the show assumed they were a couple as well. The show was just having fun. But I know there are people who ship them as slash too. >_>

@TheLastSoul Even though Martin Freeman himself has said that Sherlock and John is a love story?
maxkitty223 1 month ago
@maxkitty223 I agree that Sherlock and John love each other. I agree that they have a very strong and close bond. BUT, I'm just stating that I don't see their relationship as homosexual, as some other people do. They're a great duo. A great team. And they will always continue to be. But I also see the chemistry, attraction, and what could be LOVE between Sherlock and Irene. And John is interested in and attracted to women. That doesn't mean that him and Sherlock can't have the bond that they do.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@TheLastSoul when I read the books I loved the relationship between Sherlock&John, but I never saw it as a romantic one. I'm reading them again now, after watching the series, but I still think it's the greatest bromance ever told. I also think that what Sherlock saw in Irene in the books is actually quite open to interpretation, so one can read it as they prefer (I think Moftiss did the same pretty well).
SweetHarlequin 1 month ago
@maxkitty223 you're taking Martin's words literally and out of context. He said that to explain that Sherlock and John met when they needed each other the most, that they completed each other, but that doesn't automatically imply they're romantically involved. Real friendship is one of the purest forms of unconditioned love.
SweetHarlequin 1 month ago

annabelSPNlover 1 month ago 5
@annabelSPNlover Platonicism is a myth, get over it. The people who invented it had bad relationships with their mothers so they thought love was a lowly thing.
slendersail 1 month ago
@slendersail I think slash sort of gross, purely because I like to respect characters and their sexual orientation. If Holmes or Watson were gay, fine, but they're not. And honestly, I'd prefer to watch a show with two straight best friends of the same sex going about their business without all the random claims to them being attracted to each other. God knows Gatiss and Moffat stick in enough gay jokes already!!!
annabelSPNlover 4 weeks ago
@annabelSPNlover That's cause u only found the kind of slash that *doesn't* respect the characters. Is usually written by very young girls. Mature slash respects the characters' souls and their perfect mates - that bond which is more important to them than anyone else in the Universe (i.e. anyone in the book or show). As for Holmes/Watson, remember: they're not real! They are invented and as such they ARE how you want to see them. The premise of these "best friend" shows IS soulmateship, tho.
slendersail 3 weeks ago
@annabelSPNlover So in other words, you're way off the mark when you label it "random claims". It's the farthest thing from random that can ever be. What's "random" is all those other partners getting stuck in, to say that Holmes & Watson are not as married as they totally appear. But I would inquire what you mean by "their business", because this is the central issue. What do you see their "business" as being? Solving crimes?
slendersail 3 weeks ago
@TheLastSoul That's how you see it, but you need to remember that behaviour often conceals what's really going on, and humans are often clueless even when it happens to them. The show portrays a deep attraction which just becomes a fact in and of itself, whichever way the two try to conceptualize it. Oftentimes, the very thing we thought we disliked ("boring" etc) disguises the most special person we can ever meet - a true partner. Subtext is fun, yes, but it is also an important lesson.

TheLastSoul 1 month ago 10
@TheLastSoul
Constantly dismissing them BECAUSE it's gay is not really a good enough answer
koishiou 1 month ago 2
@koishiou I don't think they have "homoerotic tension". I think their relationship is more brother-like. But the series obviously does like to joke around calling them a couple. I think it's more just something they play around with for fun, not to be taken serious. And Irene can claim to be a lesbian, but she obviously has feelings for Sherlock. What John said was like someone telling two people to "get a room". That doesn't mean jealousy, it means he can see the attraction between them.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago 4
@TheLastSoul
In my experience it looks like jealousy...
koishiou 1 month ago
@koishiou Well, John IS the king of awkward moments. lol. That's just what he does. It's part of his character's comic relief. "Trying to reinsert himself with his quip" - I see why people think that. But again, it could just be the "third wheel" feeling. Although I think it's more of him just wanting to pop in and acknowledge the awkwardness, because that's his personality. Acting awkward. John actually seems more glad than jealous that Sherlock has taken interest and shown feelings for Irene.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago 9
@TheLastSoul Have you even seen the episode? He was never glad, he felt extremely bothered the whole episode.
tehaguiar 1 month ago
@tehaguiar Yes I've seen the episode. Several times. He didn't seem bothered. He seemed surprised and awkward by it because it was unusual for Sherlock. But throughout the episode he seemed more worried for Sherlock because he knew he had feelings for Irene and knew that Sherlock didn't know what to make of it. He talks about it in his blog too, and he doesn't sound bothered by it. He sounds interested that Sherlock is actually interested in a woman, because he didn't think he could be.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago 2
@TheLastSoul I'd have to ask you to watch it again, because he did seem bothered. Rewatch it and look at his face, and tell me if he ever smiled thinking 'oh Sherlock/Irene? Nice', because he didn't. The scene in this video is just a reflection of it. He didn't know if Sherlock had feelings for her or not, and in the end, Sherlock didn't. Irene, even in the books, is written by the fact of the "challenge" she represented, but never as the woman he fell in love with or grew feelings for.
tehaguiar 1 month ago
@tehaguiar Okay, now who's acting like they never watched the episode? Sherlock clearly displayed feelings for Irene throughout the entire thing, but at the end he still wanted to win. He still wanted to beat her, because that's how he is. And the very end with Sherlock with Irene's camera phone and his flashback of him saving her. He obviously cared and still had feelings for her. Several adaptations have Irene as his love interest too. And John did know. He talks about it in his blog.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@TheLastSoul So you admit that you act as if you haven't watch the episode? Be careful with the words you use, mate. I'm not talking about the other adaptations, I'm talking about the book. John says in the book that Sherlock never loved her, but saw her as a challenge. Also, she fled with her husband in the books, so my argument remains.
tehaguiar 1 month ago
@tehaguiar Adding one more thing: Both Moffat and Gatiss are faithful to the books, since they are huge fans of Conan Doyle. Sherlock and Irene's relationship wasn't love, and they didn't indicate it like that. When it seemed like it was, it turned out that Sherlock was checking her pulse, and not reciprocating her feelings.
tehaguiar 1 month ago
@tehaguiar No I didn't admit to acting like it. I was merely referring to your words making it sound like I had not seen the show, when you are acting that way yourself. We are both interpreteing things from the show in completely different ways. Although I think John Watson himself would agree with my statements, since he has pretty much already said the same thing in his own blog.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@tehaguiar The show could be basing things off other adaptations as well. I mean it's obviously not completely based off the original books. Irene didn't flee with any husband. And John in the show actually did (or does) think Sherlock feels something for Irene. So there are differences.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@tehaguiar And yes, Sherlock saw her as a challenge, but he did show interest and feelings for her too. He was attracted to her, but it was more than that. He kept her camera phone, he kept all her texts to him, he kept tabs on her whereabouts and tracked her down to save her, most likely killing or seriously injuring her would-be executioners in the process. And when he said "The woman...THE woman" at the very end, the way he emphasized "the" sounded as if he was saying she was the one for him.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@TheLastSoul "I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position." - A Scandal in Bohemia.
tehaguiar 1 month ago
@tehaguiar I've read that on Wikipedia. But who is to say John really knew how Sherlock felt. And I don't know why you keep quoting from the old books. If you actually read John's blog he talks about how Sherlock felt something for Irene. You're just ignoring it.

TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@tehaguiar And John did seem amused when he realized Irene was texting Sherlock. He gave a small smile there and even a small smile when he saw Irene sleeping in Sherlock's bed So no, he didn't seem "bothered" by it. I think the rest of the time he's frowning because he's either being sympathetic, stunned, or weirded out.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@TheLastSoul Oh my god! No he didn't! When she was naked, he felt uncomfortable. When he saw Sherlock's new ringtone, he felt annoyed and uncomfortable, I even quote: "I'm not stupid, you know". When he discovered that she was alive, he got angry at her because she flirted with Sherlock. Then, there's the scene in this video that he feels left out and bothered. To me, you're just seeing the episode the way you want to because you can't accept that John might have feelings for Sherlock.
tehaguiar 1 month ago
@tehaguiar Okay, now you're being completely blind and ridiculous. How could John NOT be umcomfortable with Irene naked? SHE WAS NAKED. Good God, how could you not see the awkwardness with that? And about the ringtone, he seemed curious, and then amused, not bothered. And yes he did smile in those instances I mentioned. And he wasn't angry at her for flirting with Sherlock, he was angry at her for letting Sherlock think she was dead and how depressed he was over it.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@TheLastSoul Not by the fact that she was naked. By the fact that she was also exposing John as well.
Irene: Somebody loves you. If I had to punch you in the face I’d avoid your nose and teeth, too.
John: Could you put something on, please? Anything at all. A napkin.
Irene: Why? Are you feeling exposed?
tehaguiar 1 month ago
@tehaguiar I don't think the lines are referring to that. Sure, Irene made that comment about the punching, but John just seems to not know what to do or how to react due to her very distracting nude body. I still see this scene as a man acting awkward because a naked woman is in the room. I didn't get the impression that "exposed" meant jealousy if that's what you're implying. I interpreted that as....welll, a man feeling exposed in the presence of a naked woman.
TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@tehaguiar He seemed irritated when he found out she was flirting "at" him because it was something so silly. It set him off when he was already angry. His anger had been building. He wouldn't blow up about her flirting just for that. And I think YOU'RE the one seeing the episode the way you want. John does have feelings for Sherlock. They're close friends. But you're the one who can't comprehend the characters and scenes. With John, all you've got is "he looked bothered".
TheLastSoul 1 month ago

TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@TheLastSoul And the scene that you're saying he felt amused is an even bigger example of how bothered John was with the Sherlock/Irene dynamic.

TheLastSoul 1 month ago
@TheLastSoul No, no, I'm not saying that it's romantic. But it's not a brotherly bond either. Sherlock and John's relationship is too huge to be considered romantic, it's so much more than that, they obviously love each other. It's not about them hooking up, it's about how much they need each other. And I even quote Martin Freeman: "It's kind of a love story." Do you know what I mean? I don't think I can even put their relationship into words. It's complicated.
tehaguiar 1 month ago

Can you imagine if Sherlock and Irene did have a kid? It'd probably conquer the world by the time it was five. o.O

@ObviouslyOutlissa LOL. Yes it would. XDDD

@ObviouslyOutlissa according to some writers they had and he was named Nero Wolfe :P
