IMO, DT made a wrong move by getting Mike Mangini as their new drummer. He's an awesome drummer nonetheless but he's not a good pick for DT. DT should have picked Blake Richardson from BTBAM. His drumming could make old DT songs sound fresher and he could have made the drumming in ADTOE a lot better. I really hope Mangini departs DT at 2013, and goes back to Berklee that way Richardson could step in full time. Peace.

At 5:04, I count the measures as being 5/4 and 4/4 being repeated for a while during the guitar solo.In addition, Blake's drums have got to be the best sounding rock drums I have heard.He's got to be one of the best rock drummers alive and in action.

@irwin3036able the issue is that when DT was auditioning new drummers, they wanted someone who played the parts exactly as they were, which is why they passed on amazing drummers like Thomas Lang. I think that mode of thinking was flawed to begin with, which is why I tend to agree with you about Richardson

I prefer to improv many parts live, But many bands especially those as prestigious as DT spend weeks in the studio crafting parts for the song, and so they feel that for their art to be expressed the way they intended, the original parts have to be played. Its kind of lame, at the same time if you made a replica of a famous painting you cant change it.

If I could be called average against that list of names I would consider it the greatest praise I've ever received. Richardson's a bloody amazing drummer and fantastically creative on their latest EP. But he's not quite a virtuoso yet and so yes doesn't compare to those you listed.

Come 2015, I say Mike Mangini should rest for awhile and give the temporary spot to Blake Richardson from BTBAM for one album and one year tour. After that, Mangini could be brought back in. ONE DT ALBUM, just ONE, with Blake behind the drums would be awesome :))
Dream Theater made one big mistake when they didn't audition Blake Richardson. Imagine Dream Theater with Blake Richardson behind the kit. It would be one hell of a band compared to what they were before. (no disrespect to Portnoy)
@irwin3036able Blake's drum style is too open filled based to work with dream theater. It fits best with BTBAM. Yes portnoy used a lot of fills and so does mangini, but blakes are throughout the whole song every song. Just isn't within dream theater's style.

Dream Theater made one big mistake when they didn't audition Blake Richardson. Imagine Dream Theater with Blake Richardson behind the kit. It would be one hell of a band compared to what they were before. (no disrespect to Portnoy)

@irwin3036able Blake's drum style is too open filled based to work with dream theater. It fits best with BTBAM. Yes portnoy used a lot of fills and so does mangini, but blakes are throughout the whole song every song. Just isn't within dream theater's style.
