Rustic is the key word here. The hearty vegetables cut up in chunks is ideal for a country style meal. For those who don't know he is referring to the chicken as bird, I don't know what to tell you. If you don't realize that the same chicken/bird/, bird/chicken is the same creature he is referring to, you need to go back to "common sense" training. It's one and the same animal he is referring to.
