I just learned Cosmogenesis and Omnivium are apparently two installments in a four-album concept that the band is doing. Now I'm very happy, over the next few years I get to anticipate at least two more awesome albums from these fantastic musicians. When I'm 40 years old Obscura's albums are gonna be remembered like the way Death's albums are remembered today.
@DarkRetroFan64 We won't know until we get there. Now there's so many bands, the "legacy" is up in the air. I honestly think Vektor and Obscura have the best chance of being the pioneers of today. If you don't know Vektor, I feel sorry for you. "Cosmic Cortex" is a song worthy of rivaling for one of the best metal songs ever written, as with "Anticosmic Overload".
Great track, great band. The start of this reminds me a little bit of "Guardian angel" by John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, and Paco De lucia
Anyway, bands like Obscura, The Faceless, Between the Buried and me, And Necrophagist have brought death metal to a new level. I'd love to see more bands emerge in the tech/melodic death genre. It takes a lot of muscianship, though ... so only the really good musicians can actually play it.
tech death is in dire need of some vocal diversity, i know the focus is mainly the music but a tech death band with a more diverse vocalist would probably do much better and kind of change the game but nothing against obscura ofcourse great band
I feel fucking dumb after listening to this, finding it awesome and then scrolling down to see fags argue about genres. @TehCoGGii Welcome to the realm of no logic, where actually making sense or bringing up a good point doesn't matter, as long as you act stupid enough.
@Rcbquark My first introducrion to it was Steve DiGiorgio. I know he was playing "The Frog" in Death, but I seem to remember fretless in an earlier Sadus album but I could be mistaken. It changed my whole perspective on metal bass and I proceeded to convert an old Peavy bass to fretless. Thanks for pointing those other guys out,
cont. prog tech death, but it's not really necessary as almost all bands in the genre are progressive. By saying technical death metal, you pretty much encompass 90% of the bands sound.
Yeah it's not deathcore, not even slightly. But yeah they have a lot of fusion elements. The best description is technical death metal. Yes, they are very progressive, fusion-esque, and sometimes even experimental; however, they fit 100% squarely into the technical death metal genre. Bands in the genre can differ in many ways, but the main underlying themes of technical death metal are very clear and Obscura fits best into this genre. If you want to waste more space, you could call them prog te
Death is my favorite band of all time, and they shall be forever. But i've heard these guys called the new Death, and honestly, i can see it. These guys are amazing. Anyone who talks down about Obscura should go try to write a song this good.
I know it's annoying to discuss what genre it is, it is an individual meaning, some are right & some are wrong. There is about 1-2 min. that can be called Death Metal (remember just my view) in this number. As I hear it, it's very progressive, not typical Deathcore, but a lot of bands are often judged by the vox.A band w/ distorted guitars & growling, then it's DM, without discussion. But today many bands are more hybrid bands, who mix lots of genres. So fuck the genre. If you like it, why bother??
Obscura is playing leads on the new Spawn of Possession album that's coming out Q1 this year. Pick it up it's going to be insane. And, if you like guitar, listen to Symphony X. It's not death metal and it's not heavy, but Michael Romeo is one of the best guitar players of our time. If you want guitar music, that's a good example. I don't even like anything other than death metal, yet I still have all their albums as a guitar player.
@BER2ERKER Thanks! I listen to Symphony X a lot, I love that kind of metal with insane guitar and overall good songs. And you're right, Romeo is amazing. I checked out some of Spawn of Possession, i had just been waiting for the next album because i knew Christian would play on it, but I liked Noctambulant, the album, a lot. Btw, I tried to get into Origin, but I didn't know where to start, I have just listened to Antithesis so far...it's good, very good. Thanks again
disappointed that nobody replied to you with: Spawn Of Possession, ORIGIN, Severed Savior (start with Servile Insurrection, the previous stuff is uber duber heavy you might not like it). These three bands are legendary technical death metal. That's enough to keep busy for at least a year.
@DarkRetroFan64 The pig squealing, dependent-on-chugging-the-open-string thing isn't really modern death metal. And yeah, I find it pretty uninteresting. This stuff is just great, though! Very impressive stuff!
I have to thank Obscura for still giving me hope in today's death metal. I hope this influences people to play better shit than today's music. 1980's music like Death or Possessed was the best, that NEEDS to come back.
@DrunkernBob AGREED! You ever hear of the band Cynic? wellll the singer and drummer have a side project called Aeon Spoke, has ex-Death members. Trust me it's not Death music, but its really great chill-tech stuff. I suggest checking it out.
side note (kinda funny), Obscura does a Ciynic cover. They are all connected lol.
@FoStoFoSho I have heard of a band named cynic, all thanks to Death. It as ascociated with them, along with control denied. Most bands are connected, that's how I have come to known about the main Death Metal ones.
@DrunkernBob its hard as hell to form a band like that. finally i found people to play that with but everyone is so into that deathcore garbage no one wants to solo all they want is break downs :/
@DrunkernBob Just to clarify, for the ones who 'don't get it', It's true, there's something bands such as Obscura, Death and Possessed have that million's of new DM bands don't... Atmosphere. Too many bands nowdays are more concernced with shred, stamina and technique, (don't get me wrong, all vital when playing tech death) which often leads to a stagnant atmosphere-less mess.
@DrunkernBob i think obscura is better than most 80's bands. way more complex, way more musical, way more melodic. my favourite band at the moment, along with dream theater and gojira.
Modern death metal is such a wonder and we're truly spoiled for choice!
There's brutal, darkened, old school, technical, melodic, blackened, atmospheric, progressive stylisations among many other ways to have your extremity served. So many awesome bands these days in this beautiful genre: from Fleshgod Apocalypse to Quo Vadis.
thanks for the suggestions, trying them out. I had already listened to The Faceless and BTBAM, but I'm trying the other bands. Btw, i don''t only mean technical death metal, but any kind of metal with melodic lines that is complex.(Dream Theater alike?) Again, thanks for the suggestions
@SeanMcStomper if you haven't listented to Fear Factory that may be your answer...a little heavier than Dream Theater, but extremely talented/melodic.
So guys, I am searching for more technical/complex bands that sound cool, like Obscura, Necrophagist, Cynic, Watchtower, Blottted Science (specially interested in the guitar), so i figured out i'd just ask you for suggestions.
@SeanMcStomper Well I like my tech death music to be tasteful. I'm not interested in modern wanky tech death bands like Brain Drill and such. If you liked the one I suggested also try Disembarkation and Pavor. Both bands are complex to the max, yet tasteful
@SeanMcStomper The Black Dahlia Murder are melodic death metal but they have strong tech death influences imo. plus, they do sound a bit like obscura, the riffing is similar.
@SeanMcStomper Try Augury, Atheist, Quo Vadis, Martyr(the Canadian one, not the Dutch one, who are fun but not exactly complex and technical), Ouroboros, Spiral Architect, Toxik, Scariot, Communic. Not all death bands, but if you're looking for complexity and technicality they might all fit what you're looking for.
@SeanMcStomper Well, not exactly super-technical, but if you want great overall riffing, solos and excellent songwriting try listening to the recently broken-up Nevermore. I suggest starting on the Godless Endeavor album. Its sort of the simplest to digest, but all their albums are fantastic! Just a suggestion though, haha. And for impressive modern bands, I suggest The Faceless, Arsis (I love these guys. Check out their first three albums)
@15viceandvirtues Oh yeah, awesome band...I loved Loomis' solos on the 4-5 songs I had heard before, I have listened to Dead Heart in a Dead World and This Godless Endeavor now....those are GREAT albums. Zero Order Phase is insane as well, hope Loomis gets more solo albums out (hope his second comes out this year...since there's been some info on guest solos...)
@SlayerHollow999 Yeah man his mom was an Inspiration for Cannibal Corpse when they wrote Fucked With a Knife,She Was Asking For It and Adicted to Vaginal Skin lol
I actually enjoyed the clean parts in this, but Steffan growled them live. Still sounded good, but I was curious as to whether he could replicate them.
I once read someones comment saying this is similar to what they think Death would be releasing if they were still around and regards to melody, technicality, level of progression and all around song writing skill ive got to say I agree to some degree though i feel death would probably sound slightly heavier and I personally think this sounds more generic Tech Death
Obscura is often referred to as the Second Death, from what I've heard. I highly agree with both them and you. Death -would- have a heavier sound, but these guys are GREAT.
I don't understand these comments. For some, this may distantly resemble Metallica, like for me with some melodies but not the most. I like some works from Metallica and I kinda starting to like this. Why does it have to be somekind of a competition?
When that riff kicks in at 1:12....pure fuckin awesome.

thanks for the suggestions, trying them out. I had already listened to The Faceless and BTBAM, but I'm trying the other bands. Btw, i don''t only mean technical death metal, but any kind of metal with melodic lines that is complex.(Dream Theater alike?) Again, thanks for the suggestions

@SeanMcStomper if you haven't listented to Fear Factory that may be your answer...a little heavier than Dream Theater, but extremely talented/melodic.

obscura....fucking beast!
javiejometal 3 months ago
So guys, I am searching for more technical/complex bands that sound cool, like Obscura, Necrophagist, Cynic, Watchtower, Blottted Science (specially interested in the guitar), so i figured out i'd just ask you for suggestions.
Obscura is fucking beast!

@poizonsting9 Dude, where did you find such "unheard of" bands. Iniquity's first album is cool so far though.

@SeanMcStomper Well I like my tech death music to be tasteful. I'm not interested in modern wanky tech death bands like Brain Drill and such. If you liked the one I suggested also try Disembarkation and Pavor. Both bands are complex to the max, yet tasteful
poizonsting9 3 months ago
@SeanMcStomper The Faceless, Between the Buried and Me, Destroy Destroy Destroy
cloud9846 3 months ago
@SeanMcStomper The Black Dahlia Murder are melodic death metal but they have strong tech death influences imo. plus, they do sound a bit like obscura, the riffing is similar.
AP93Playa 3 months ago
@SeanMcStomper Try Augury, Atheist, Quo Vadis, Martyr(the Canadian one, not the Dutch one, who are fun but not exactly complex and technical), Ouroboros, Spiral Architect, Toxik, Scariot, Communic. Not all death bands, but if you're looking for complexity and technicality they might all fit what you're looking for.
DShiflet01 2 months ago
@DShiflet01 I'll try the last five, i already know, and like a lot, the other bands you mentioned. Thanks a lot :)
Btw, don't u people think this song would be better as an instrumental? Just saying, not complaining.
SeanMcStomper 2 months ago

I actually enjoyed the clean parts in this, but Steffan growled them live. Still sounded good, but I was curious as to whether he could replicate them.
c4bb4g3 4 months ago
@Tainted369 I disagree. I get their songs stuck in my head all the time and they're probably the best band I've seen live.
c4bb4g3 4 months ago
I once read someones comment saying this is similar to what they think Death would be releasing if they were still around and regards to melody, technicality, level of progression and all around song writing skill ive got to say I agree to some degree though i feel death would probably sound slightly heavier and I personally think this sounds more generic Tech Death
666jony666 4 months ago 2
@666jony666
Obscura is often referred to as the Second Death, from what I've heard. I highly agree with both them and you. Death -would- have a heavier sound, but these guys are GREAT.

Guys why are we fighting we are metalheads we should hate on another metal band or metalhead we should respect peoples' bands
Retrox13 4 months ago
I don't understand these comments. For some, this may distantly resemble Metallica, like for me with some melodies but not the most. I like some works from Metallica and I kinda starting to like this. Why does it have to be somekind of a competition?
