Bears are really cool animals and I think the world is a better place for having them. That doesn't change the fact that they can and will kill you if they're of a mind to. A healthy respect for their power is always good.
i live near yosemite and will be glad when all those slob tourists stop coming, leaving their trash all over the place, running over the animals with their cars, pissing and shitting everywhere, and feeding the wildlife. the wild ones are always the losers. mother nature always bats last.
I won't defend "slob tourists" too much, but it seems a little like the pot calling the kettle black here. The further into bear territory that people live, the more of an impact humans have on bears. What's worse, living (even as a responsible citizen) in bear territory and impacting bears every day, or visiting for 5 days a year and then leaving the bears in peace the remainder of the year?
I heard a Yosemite bear had worked out how to get into the older ones, before the redsticker versions, by holding the led in its jaws and rotating the drum with its paws. But now they have the push-in bits on opposite sides to make it harder. Additional: Don't place these things up hill of your campsite. When I saw it start to roll towards the camera my heart stopped. Always downhill and downwind.
This is why I like to use an odor barrier bag like OPSaK in tandem with my bear vault. I agree with the guy below...whoever took this vid had balls of steel.

Scary close to that bear! What point does the bear ever walk away from the canister?

I don't know about Yosemite, but apparently in Maine they have it figured out. Where there is a will there is a way.
