Nice cover although as a JLL fan I would have preferred if he sang the original lyrics. Forget about radio play and pleasing the masses. Anyway, Keith's backing on this song is a major plus on this recording although the song still lacks the grittyness JLL might have achieved had he approached the song a little differently.
I really tried to like this cut, I really did. The problems are that it the backing track sounds like a preset from some Yamaha keyboard or Band in a Box. It's too fast without the original country-soul behind it. And, as stated before, the key line was altered for no good reason. The Killer really did kill this great classic.
Amazon.com have a complete sample mp3 for segments of each music in the standart CD. I heard Bad Moon Rising... I almost cry, since Jerry was practicaly just murmuring the song, as can't sing similar to the deep original version of J.Fogerty.
GRACIAS JERRY LEE LEWIS!!!
It is an excellent version of the Killer. It is a very quiet in fact I have heard the version of Exile on Main Street The Rolling Stones and is very similar. Musically impeccable. The rhythm is perfect and the piano of Jerry is felt to the core. JERRY LEE LEWIS and FERNANDO GIL THANKS!
@drfernandooscargil I've no idea, but he's ruined the best line in the song (for those who don't know the original has the lyric "Gotta scrape that SHIT right off your shoes").
Jerry has become a bit prudish in older age, dis-owning songs like 'Big Legged Woman' & 'Meat Man' (unlike Chuck Berry, who still wants people to play with his ding-a-ling!).
@peterdchecksfield I believe that Jerry Lee Lewis is a great musician, very talented, and that despite the passage of time remains in effect. I think it is fair to ask even more than they do. It also continues to play a show themes show very characteristic of him as Great Balls of Fire and Whole Lotta Shaking Going On or Rockin my life away.
@peterdchecksfield I think he knows why he has done. Have some reason. Although I also think that when someone reaches the stage of your career to which Jerry comes, has the right to sing the lyrics as he pleases. Maybe it's some advice for more outreach to the album thinking that some radio or TV stations may not broadcast the original lyrics? Hmm.
@peterdchecksfield Jerry will certainly evaluate this possibility, Peter. And yet has chosen to change the word. Only an analysis of convenience or expediency. Often, years go accompanied by wisdom and reflection. In short, Jerry will know the reasons for the change point. Thank you. Fernando Gil.
@peterdchecksfield I think both Jerry and Chuck Berry deserves the applause and recognition. - Mean old man, the Jerry's new album will have all our support. Peter Thanks for your opinion, dissent undoubtedly perfect knowledge. Fernando Gil.
@drfernandooscargil Jerry's new album will only get my support if I actually like it (just like anyone elses albums), & so far I'm not impressed at all. I'm certainly not going to encourage people to buy something I don't like out of some sort of misguided loyalty. We all know Jerry is (still) capable of much better...
@peterdchecksfield Maybe the lyric change is due to the fact that, unlike "last man standing", "mean old man" was recorded as a country music c.d. and is being marketed as such. Country music radio stations, like country music audiences (the people who purchase the c.d.s) tend to be much more conservative and prudish than rock and blues audiences. If this song were on "last man standing" I'll bet the original lyric wouldn't have been changed. I guess only JLL and the producer knows for sure.
@jerryaltman I think it was a mistake to anticipate and slow songs as the album's release. However, much will be sold as true fans we just settle for the original disk
@drfernandooscargil I'm afraid this will be the last album from the Killer, at least for rock, or nem music performances, since he got too frail and his voice losted the highs and longs.
Dont like it .

Way to slaughter a classic. You can tell he's on thin ice with this album just by looking at the cover..

I hate the way he's watered down the lyrics, saying "shine" instead of "shit"! : (

@drfernandooscargil But do you think it was right for Jerry to censor the lyrics on this song?

@drfernandooscargil Bill Haley & Pat Boone used to also record watered-down versions in the 50s...
He can sing whatever he likes, but he should also know how uncool it makes him look to the people who've known & loved this song for 38 years.

When the standart version come there will be just few musics we didn't heard, as they realise for dowload before the album arrive.
