the first thing that comes to mind is circle, and money. but when it comes to names it could mean anything.

if the kanji they use is 丸, it could mean circle, fishball, or meatball. but meatball would be pronounced kan, and not maru.

it could also loosely mean pure or purity. I don't know but it's a pretty common name for pets.

It doesn't even need to be another cat for company, bought mine 2 dwarf hamsters (gone now)for the cats maru seems nonaggressive as well, they love to chase and play with them in the rolling ball etc or even a bird just another creature more nature to keep him company.. Hamsters are hours of fun :)
