Abs are still muscles that require (1) full range of movement, (2) medium-heavy weight resistance, and (3) the appropriate set to rep ratio to increase muscular size. Otherwise, you just get tone (like a swimmer's abs).
Crunch machines fit the bill for all three requirements. I never had sore abs for four days (like I have for other muscle groups) and ab muscle growth until I started working them like other muscle groups: medium/heavy weight, approximately 4 sets of 10 reps...once a week.
Leg lifts are good for developing the hip flexors...a body group often ignored by trainers. Mostly, because that region had been covered up by clothing (even bodybuilders!).
But nowadays, you need to work out the hip flexors to get that sexy mid-drift look...and leg lifts are part of that (albeit not the safest exercise).
Ditto for the lower obliques that have been ignored by most.
wrong. the primary function of the abdominals is to RESIST any movement. you are better off squatting, deadlifting, overhead pressing, and doing some planks
Amen! Thanks for making that point! The "function" of the core muscles is primarily as stabilizers, not flexors/rotators. The core (abs) is better off strengthened by resisting movement in different planes of motion. So, yes... sit ups may suck, but so do crunches. Thanks for the comment, Zorflex!
incorrect. the primary function of the abdominals is to resist any movement, therefore they are trained better by doing overhead squats, military press, etc. if a simple situp stresses your lower back, you need to train it
ive never done a sit up before when i work out you just do bicycle crunches(the msot painfull, which is good), crunches or and those magic ab machines
No big deal... I'm actually quite pleasantly surprised how much stuff people buy. But that's a good problem to have, right? :-)
I actually have something called a "PIECE OF CRAP STRAP" that will be hitting the marketplace this fall. You're going to love it!! Subscribe and you'll one of the first to know when it comes out.
kill the sound effects, they are very distracting when you are really tring to learn something new. it cheapens what you have to say, not funny at all.
Those sound effects shat me up -.-
