Good question. One main reason is that it's believed by many Asian cultures that sharks are immune to all illnesses and thought that if they consume the shark that they will gain this immunity. Over time it has become tradition to serve shark fin soup as a wedding delicacy therefore making it a high priced item. The point that most of you are missing is that a whale shark is worth very little dead. Sure it can be sold for its, flesh and fins a shark may be worth 100's of dollars. However alive this shark will bring in 10's perhaps 100's of thousands of dollars in dive tourist revenue during it's life time from scuba divers and snorkellers anxious to see this animal in the water. It is far better for local economies to let this animal live. These shark migrate all over the world, bringing money to locals

While I do think that its wrong to kill the shark just for its fins there are many people and companies that are killing and using the entire shark for food when they catch it. Also do to the fact that we are over fishing,nif you google a little you can read up on the subject the fishermen keep having to go further and further into sea and still catch fewer fish, I don't think that lack of competition for fish would hurt us.

Last time I was in restaurant and they had Shark Fin Soup on the menu I got up and walked out, calmly explaining to the staff my reasons. Although one waitress kind of laughed at me under her breath I just told her I thought going through life without beliefs or principles was even sadder.

I'm aware that shark populations are fine in US waters and i know we don't have finning along with some countries in the Caribbean. I personally believe that there should be a season or something for shark hunting or some regulations especially in low populated areas i don't think it should be ban all together especially because it is a culture and for the reasons you are saying.

Good question. One main reason is that it's believed by many Asian cultures that sharks are immune to all illnesses and thought that if they consume the shark that they will gain this immunity. Over time it has become tradition to serve shark fin soup as a wedding delicacy therefore making it a high priced item. People saw this window of opportunity to make money and due to laws of supply and demand shark fins have now become a huge market. Feel free to do ur own research as well

Not Shark fishing, where people actually use the shark or fish for sport. In finning they DONT use the whole shark and that is that there is no gray area. I do fish, dive, snorkel the whole nine yards. I keep and eat most of the fish I catch so i'm not some tree hugger who is just blowing smoke out their ass and is all about saving the planet.

The point that most of you are missing is that a whale shark is worth very little dead. Sure it can be sold for its, flesh and fins a shark may be worth 100's of dollars. However alive this shark will bring in 10's perhaps 100's of thousands of dollars in dive tourist revenue during it's life time from scuba divers and snorkellers anxious to see this animal in the water. It is far better for local economies to let this animal live. These shark migrate all over the world, bringing money to locals

@XxxxExclusivexxxX actually they are severly endangered do the math it takes years for sharks to reproduce and mature and we kill millions every year. i know its hard not being totally ignorant....

sharks dont EAT people that attack surfers becuase their regular diet is sea turtles. to sharks the bottom of surfboards looks like sea turtles so its confusing to them. and eating sharks will mess up the food chain.

While I do think that its wrong to kill the shark just for its fins there are many people and companies that are killing and using the entire shark for food when they catch it. Also do to the fact that we are over fishing,nif you google a little you can read up on the subject the fishermen keep having to go further and further into sea and still catch fewer fish, I don't think that lack of competition for fish would hurt us.

This is quite simple. Take away the demand for Shark Fin Soup and the sharks won't be killed for it.
Last time I was in restaurant and they had Shark Fin Soup on the menu I got up and walked out, calmly explaining to the staff my reasons. Although one waitress kind of laughed at me under her breath I just told her I thought going through life without beliefs or principles was even sadder.
