It's so hard to belive it's been a year now. I really did love this movie and it meet all my expectations and even improved in some areas from the comic.
I loved the comic and loved the film. Yet it saddens me that it didn't do very well at the boxoffice and underperformed. It deserved to do better.
I hope it becomes a cult film like Blade Runner, Donnie Darko, or even the Wizard of Oz that years after it's release, it get the recognition it deserves and becomes praised.
I don't mean to be rurd, but their were three comics that changed the comic book world. The first two were the once that you have in you're review, Watchmen & the Dark Knight Returns, the thread one was Maus by Art Spiegelman.
I know it didn't involve any superheroes, but its impact was just as large as the other two books. Such all the characters were animals, but that didn't stop it from being an accurate telling of world war two, or having great three dimensional character.

I actually felt Watchmen, being a 1st installment, was constructed correctly. While the film spent major time building, which took it out of the action catagory, it held your interest which is no easy task. I did not figit through any of this film. And when the action, though in small segments, kicked in...awsome! I fully enjoyed this film. I felt like: damn, it's over.
this guy is very true tho, Watchmen is not an action movie/comic. it is more a mystery. it is a dark story of heroes who are confused human beings. that is probably why some ppl didnt like the movie, they were expecting spiderman or batman. the movie was awesome, only f you knew what the watchmen was about so he's right, they should of marketed better

Most of Kubrick's movies were based on a book or something, but he was able to take his films to places that made him stand out as a creative mind on his own, so I think your estimation about Snyder is still fairly true.
That's probably because you didn't understand what the movie was trying to tell you. You only got the plot, and decided it was under your standards of a good movie.

The graphic novel was great - the best written graphic novel that I ever read. The movie probably won't be able to capture the level of dimensions of the Watchmen story, but I still think the movie will still be good & worth seeing. Many fans of the graphic novel have big expectations for the movie which will make it difficult for them to enjoy it.
Relax peeps - there won't be a case of Zack Snyder saying "the world will look up and shout ' save us from your movie!' and I'll whisper 'no'".

you know after reading the book I can identify EVERY scene in the preview. I now can understand that those who didn't read can't get any story out of the preview. However the best way to view a movie to me is not to know absolutely nothing outside the title.

Woah woah wait a second here. Did you just put Snyder's 300 on the same visionary playing field as 2001 space odyssey, star wars and the matrix?!?!?! I understand the intent, which is to say that the visual style of 300 really pushed the boundaries, but the term visionary includes the content of the idea behind it. I'm pretty sure a horribly inaccurate portrayal of the Battle of Thermopylae does not constitute a visionary film. Other than that incredible review.

i'd never heard of the watchmen comic until this movie was anounced. when i saw the trailer, i thought "so its bunch of guys in rediculous costumes, a half naked floating blue guy and some cool special effects. BIG. FREAKING. DEAL, i hope its a good movie, but from that preview and since i don't know the comic, i don't have high hopes for it.
You're right TMPC. I don't know **** about Watchmen and the trailer left me confused, although I could gleam that there was a mystery/conspiracy thing going on.
I have other reasons for being so hyped up: one is that I had never heard of Watchmen (born in 1987) 'til David Hayter (aka Solid Snake) talked about writing the script for this movie in an interview, since he's a massive fan of the graphic novel. I also read a preview in the Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper that normally hates
action movies like the plague, that talked about the rough ride this movie went through, including all the pressures Snyder felt from the execs, demanding that the setting be 20 years later for example and cutting out graphic scenes so as to make it more widely available. He did cut down on the running time but that's something you can't help be wary of in Hollywood.
So this movie strikes me to be one of the most inventive and daring we've had for a while
I disagree with the Zack Snyder "visionary" claim. Those other directors that you mentioned were "visionary" because they presented to us their vision of their own unique story.
So far Zack Snyder has only given us Frank Miller's story and pretty much copied Frank's vision page for page.
I think we should hold off on the Zack Snyder praise until he gives us something other than someone else's graphic novel translated to celluloid (cheesey lines and all).
I don't know why morph755 said the dark knight sucked I thought it was awesome but whatever. 300 was bad because of it's lack of plot and its over the top stupidity of a bunch of half naked guys with an IQ of 50 fighting a war. i agree, watchmen isn't an action hero comic, i've read till dr manhattan goes to mars and still it isn't "THAT" interesting to me. I like the Idea of all characters personalities, but would they be able to fix an inch thick comic book into a 2 and a half/3 hours movie, i doubt that.
Most of the flashbacks are essential to the characters so they can't just rush it through.

I haven't been so excited about going to the theatre since "The Dark Knight". Actually, I saw the "Watchmen" trailer before TDK and was still excited about it after the movie. I have a feeling this one's going to be something special.

I been reading comics for almost 20 years. I can say this movie get's a 2 1/2 out of 5. It was just ok.

The graphic novel was great - the best written graphic novel that I ever read. The movie probably won't be able to capture the level of dimensions of the Watchmen story, but I still think the movie will still be good & worth seeing. Many fans of the graphic novel have big expectations for the movie which will make it difficult for them to enjoy it.
Relax peeps - there won't be a case of Zack Snyder saying "the world will look up and shout ' save us from your movie!' and I'll whisper 'no'".

This is one of those films that people will love or hate. Nothing wrong with luvin' it- but I hated it.
Unlike the reviewer here, I thought the movie was pretty much like the trailer- overblown, slogging, and pretentious.

i wouldn't call the 300 director visionary, 300 graphics where good, but the moive lacked in other areas so much, visionary suggests more than just looks, it suggests feels, ideas, emotions, themes, styling, something new. 300 had none

you know after reading the book I can identify EVERY scene in the preview. I now can understand that those who didn't read can't get any story out of the preview. However the best way to view a movie to me is not to know absolutely nothing outside the title.

Yeah, the trailer doesnt reveal much. the first time I saw it I was like "...what the fuck was that?" Genius marketing there, as when people saw it they rushed out to get the book so they would get it.. I know I did.

Nailed it, i have no clue about what watchman is, but you said it, they go for money and treat us like meat sacks with no ability to conceive anything above the density of spiderman. I would like to know the story behind this famous series, but money grubbing white fat cats could care less if i understand the story. its either underestimation of americas citizens or low economy and they found themselves itching and realised in the process they cant afford anything. Woah woah wait a second here. Did you just put Snyder's 300 on the same visionary playing field as 2001 space odyssey, star wars and the matrix?!?!?! I understand the intent, which is to say that the visual style of 300 really pushed the boundaries, but the term visionary includes the content of the idea behind it. I'm pretty sure a horribly inaccurate portrayal of the Battle of Thermopylae does not constitute a visionary film. Other than that incredible review.

its good because the story is BRILLIANT there should be a surprise while viewing this film so that its impact hits u fully.
also on the director point i think that scared me a little- 300 was good yes bt that direction doesnt suit watchmen whc is more of a thriller type story.
and on tht note i agree wholeheartedly with the story point. Main flaw from the marketing

The only thing that worries me is the director. Snyder can't direct actors for shit, and usually puts effed up morality, and as said, puts visuality before content.

i'd never heard of the watchmen comic until this movie was anounced. when i saw the trailer, i thought "so its bunch of guys in rediculous costumes, a half naked floating blue guy and some cool special effects. BIG. FREAKING. DEAL, i hope its a good movie, but from that preview and since i don't know the comic, i don't have high hopes for it.

You're right TMPC. I don't know **** about Watchmen and the trailer left me confused, although I could gleam that there was a mystery/conspiracy thing going on.
I have other reasons for being so hyped up: one is that I had never heard of Watchmen (born in 1987) 'til David Hayter (aka Solid Snake) talked about writing the script for this movie in an interview, since he's a massive fan of the graphic novel. I also read a preview in the Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper that normally hates

action movies like the plague, that talked about the rough ride this movie went through, including all the pressures Snyder felt from the execs, demanding that the setting be 20 years later for example and cutting out graphic scenes so as to make it more widely available. He did cut down on the running time but that's something you can't help be wary of in Hollywood.
So this movie strikes me to be one of the most inventive and daring we've had for a while

I eagerly await WATCHMEN but...
I disagree with the Zack Snyder "visionary" claim. Those other directors that you mentioned were "visionary" because they presented to us their vision of their own unique story.
So far Zack Snyder has only given us Frank Miller's story and pretty much copied Frank's vision page for page.
I think we should hold off on the Zack Snyder praise until he gives us something other than someone else's graphic novel translated to celluloid (cheesey lines and all).

I don't know why morph755 said the dark knight sucked I thought it was awesome but whatever. 300 was bad because of it's lack of plot and its over the top stupidity of a bunch of half naked guys with an IQ of 50 fighting a war. But maybe people didn't like the Dark Knight because of the fact that it was too long and a FEW fans were just seeking a good action movie with a little less plot(I don't know). However watchmen looks like a good movie.

Watchmen movie looks horrible! Zack Snyder sucks! Visionary? more like competent hack. 300 sucked, it was dull and boring. Visuals, effects, and slow-motion have nothing to do with Watchmen, they shouldn't even be in the movie.

i agree, watchmen isn't an action hero comic, i've read till dr manhattan goes to mars and still it isn't "THAT" interesting to me. I like the Idea of all characters personalities, but would they be able to fix an inch thick comic book into a 2 and a half/3 hours movie, i doubt that.
Most of the flashbacks are essential to the characters so they can't just rush it through.
anyway, you know you're still gonna watch it, even though there's a chance it'll fail

I haven't been so excited about going to the theatre since "The Dark Knight". Actually, I saw the "Watchmen" trailer before TDK and was still excited about it after the movie. I have a feeling this one's going to be something special.

Good thing you did this MPC...for all i knew, Watchmen looked like a crazy Indie action movie (note: i didn't see the "from the director of" when i first caught the preview..lol)
When i saw what i did of the preview, i was getting flashbacks of "The 5th Element" Though now that i know a bit more about Watchmen here..I know what i shouldn't expect now thanks to the preview. Curse you H-Wood Marketers! D:<
