  • Very interesting, thank you.

  • Funny how movies like these treat their public like little children.

  • How wonderfully stereotypical XD

  • lmao @ 3:10 xDDD

  • i would love to be a reference librarian =^_^= like those characters you find in those anime episodes

  • The acting in this is phenomenal! =p

  • Ah, life in libraries before computers (and long before MARC was born). My favourite bit: Doctor: "Do you have the sternaquoinamastoid and the pschomaticheadofthequadratisleviaspriovis?" Librarian: "Yes, Doctor. Here it is. I didn't mind the research, but the pronunciations had me stumped...for a bit" [glint, glint...Are you watching, Mr Selznick???] Classic stuff!

  • 3:40 That book isn't blue, it's grey! NICE TRY, VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE FILMS, INC.

  • I like this video

  • hahaha i have a question what if the books dont love you can you still be librarian? hehehehe

  • where do they put their computers in those libraries?

  • Geez, real cataloguers don't smile when they work unless they're having a breakdown.

    Go Melvin Dewey!

  • look at the chubby cheeks on those kids!

  • "Do you like all kinds of [white] people?"

  • VERY GOOD

  • awesome, awesome. much of this still applies.

  • "A blue book"

"Oh I think we can help you"

That wasn't a very good reference interview

  • wat is books?

  • I think we librarians have better hair now. But the job still requires the same sort of skills.

  • I'm a librarian and even I was bored by this!

  • i agree!!

  • I miss those old paper catalog cards--lol--

  • I think you should get out more HomedudePedroski - get out there and party Dude!!

  • I like to read and absorb information. I like to talk about what I just read to people and tell them about it. I also like to write out and express what I think about what I just read. I think I should be a librarian.

  • Love the 50's!!!!!

  • As a professional librarian with a MLS degree, I thought that although dated this video is one which many people should see in order to understand better what it really takes to be a librarian.

  • "Love for books and love for people" is now my new motto!

  • its a Documentary about a librarian profession

  • I see all librarians shown (w/ exception of 1 reference librarian--asked to compile a complex bibliography) were women, until they get to the "highly-paid executive" who tops administration. They don't say much about how all those women are paid--except at the end, to compare salaries to those in "comparable professions." Comparable low-paid, women-dominated professions like teaching and nursing, I imagine.

Of course, why am I grousing? It's no different today!

  • there was a male reference librarian too...

  • I know--I noted that in my parenthesis.

  • "Do you like all kinds of people?" Judging by the people in the shot while that's being narrated, their idea of diversity must range all the way from teenage, middle-class whites to middle-aged, middle-class whites.

  • I noticed the lack of Librarymen (Libratorrs?) as well. Best of all is how the only men are shown in leadership roles. Clearly women are simply not capable of handling the emotional strain of management! :P

  • So if I become a librarian, as a man I'll automatically have a leadership role! Sweet! lol

  • At 1:19 : "Professional men"!!!

  • Don't you just hate it when people come in that can't remember the author or title? It's a blue book...! hahaha!

  • ISU is a great school. I graduated from there and it was a wonderful 4 years. If you are not from Iowa or the Midwest, check out ISU's history. You will find it very interesting.

  • Did you notice that almost all the librarians had glasses? But that the patrons didn't?

  • "Do you like people, and do people like you?".. LOL.. people HATE me! That's why EVERYBODY'S books are overdue.. cuz I said so. ;)

  • The tone and look of this are hilarious, but I think the message is still pretty much true today. I'm inspired!

  • omg. thanks for posting this. I am graduating sunday with my masters in library science. this is hysterical.

  • Right. Darn those Xs before Ls...

  • i think the copyright date is 1946(ish) not '56.

i watched the medical library vignette twice because...was she really that ignorant or was she...oh, that's right...she's just in it for a marriage.

    (thanks for posting!)

  • Thanks. I've updated the video info.

  • Iowa State College became Iowa State University not the University of Iowa :)
