I dunno, steampunk seemed like a cool concept, but I think too many hipsters messed it up. It's nice to see people taking an interest in this old, Victorian spin on things, like if modern tech was built in 19th century England, but it does seem too hipstery.
I enjoy alot of the Steampunk stuff out there, Steampunk Magazine's fiction and some of the ideas are great but the whole Steampunk thing seems elitist to me and kinda cookie cutter...it's going to go the way of the Goth if it doesn't lose that "I'm Steampunk and way cooler than you are" feel to it.
There are many views of what steampunk is, but basically its like what Victorians thought the future would look like. If thats hard to imagine, the style is based on the idea of a post apocalyptic world where all things like clothes and machines had to be found not made and ran on the most advanced power source at the time, steam.
actually its abotu a hundred..and steampunk is basicly the imaginine of a world where the principles of the undustrial revolution continued without the atomic age
@TheDoctor6177 I listed all of the websites where I found the pictures in the description box. I'm terribly sorry if I was unable to thank the original sources, but if I found them there, I listed the website. :)
Plus, a huge thing is airship travel, and some form of airship navy. My group is like a mercenary group that is for hire by anyone that speaks the language of money. :D
where did you get those gears? I Already dresed steampunk once for a conventon, but I was sad that I didnt have gears D: and Im planning on being an everyday-steampunk :3
@TunedaQueen I went to a local hardware-only store called The Yard. I bought some things that looked cool but weren't gears and used those because actual gears are a little harder to find without taking things apart and destroying them. I actually had to flatten the teeth out with a hammer on my driveway! So yeah, I'd look in your local hardware store and think about buying cheap clocks at thrift stores or something! I also hear you can buy boxes of gears online, like ebay or something.
Isn't Steampunk a label rather than a scene? many of the characters dressing up as Steampunks seem like Goths to me and there are very few bands associated directly with it (noticed you didn't mention music) I wear a lot of long Victorian type jackets and boots and the Victorian/Edwardian era has always interested me along with any futuristic technology, so it would be interesting to go to a an event in the UK, as long as there were Steampunk gadgets there.
Im trying to put togethor a steampunk wardrobe, but i kinda want it so you could wear it everyday, and not as all outstanding looking like goggles and thoses weird props and all; cuz i don't wanna be a nerdy looking (no offense). and don't forget that pocket watches are very essential as well. i really think this video should get more views, ALOT more
Aww, thanks! An easy way to punk up a wardrobe is just to wear a military-like jacket, or get a T-shirt with Gears on it. Easy, mainstream and not too crazy.
But I wouldn't mind a pair of aviator goggles myself! :)
well i have a nice vest and cotton shirt, but no coat. i live in a very small town and i can't usually find any; but i just go to a st. Vincent depaul store and it usually turns up there lol. i guess i like a more "classy" steampunk and not one that gets in your face like those costumes that you see at conventions. but you still have to have something to show you're a steampunk, and i can't quite find that.
Why don't you try looking for super cheap watches at Goodwill or something or going to a hardware store or junk yard for gears and sewing them on a lapel or a belt buckle? Think Victorian, and it'll pass for Steampunk.
well, be aware that i live in a small wisconsin town without a dump (i really wish there was); and yeah, you're right about the watch thing, and thanks! i always go scouting around at st.vinneys and stuff, one time i found a kerosene lantern! rght now im trying to mod an old watch of mine into a pocketwatch. oh, and i collect pocketwatches. again, this vid is great for tips even though im a guy.
It sure is! I had to look it up and see some details again, because it's been forever since I've seen the movie, even though I liked it a lot. Did you know it was a book, too? The book is also classified as steampunk!
I'm really glad you're so excited though! It really makes me happy that you so enjoyed it! ;)
I know what you mean. I've always liked the asethetic without knowing it was it's own subculture. Also, I think there's a lot of steampunk in Anime. Trigun comes to mind....
Oh definitely anime--I think a lot of Japanese artists and animators use it kind of as a background style--to unify various settings while still maintaining a familiar yet unique world feel. I don't pretend to know a lot about anime, but purely on a visual basis, I definitely see it a lot in anime.
this is acctually a really good steampunk explanation video!
