@BlacktipH dont you think thats a little overkill, the worlds best shark fisherman Mark Sampson uses 1 strand of number 12 wire for blacktips. blacktips dont have bigger teeth than a dusky, and a friend of mine uses mono to catch both blacktips and duskys
When you are using single strand wire, it's not about the teeth biting through, it's more the wire kinking and snapping. When some sharks do nasty head shakes, they might kink the wire. Two strands prevents that from happening.
Anything with teeth could bite through mono, if the line is at the right angle in its mouth. Mono is made from plastic. I have never caught a leopard shark, but I would say it's highly unlikely for them to bite through heavy mono (200+lb). I would use 10inches of 100lb single strand wire to be save, with 5ft of 200lb mono above that.
So...for smaller sharks like blacktips and spinners you use mono leader and for the bigger sharks like bulls, tigers and large nurses you use wire cable leader line?
@Penitent1000 I use wire for all sharks. Blacktips will bite through mono in a heartbeat. I use #15 wire doubled up for Blacktips and #19 wire doubled up for big sharks like Tigers, Hammers, Bulls, etc...
if you hook em right in the side of the mouth with a circle hook there usually isn't too much damage done to your mono..a leader will only be good for 1 decent sized shark but if he can't get to it after the hook set..as long as he doesn't reach around and bite you off like you said..there was a guy who landed a 200 lb bull shark here recently with 150 lb fluorocarbon leader and 50 lb power pro
Of course it can be done. I caught a 5'9" Blacktip on a 50lb mono leader for pompano. I just don't like to risk it. It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
right..best safe than sorry..a shark that size on 50 lb mono leader is very impressive since he could snap that line even without his teeth, lol..i've landed similar sized blacktips and hammers with mono leader but thats 250 lb test used for targeting tarpon..now that winter is coming i'll probably be using a wire bite guard on the end of that because of fewer tarpon and the blacktip migration
nice video, i fish on the deerfield pier , but havent changed my line in a while, mackerel, snapper, blue fish, pompano , and croakers, so what pound line should i use or what ever is is called
its not that they see the cable, but they can sence it with thier electronic "pulsing" signal they use for locating prey. i use 80lb mono for our small leopard sharks and 80-240lb COATED wire for larger threshers and such. the coating really makes a difference. try it out!.

im trying to catch a leoprad shark........what type of rig would be good for that......im fishing in the ocean off a big pier
ninjabeaner94 3 years ago
Make a rig like the one in the video, but use smaller hooks and swivels. Also use single strand and mono instead of cable
BlacktipH 3 years ago
how about the legnth between the hook and the crimp
ninjabeaner94 3 years ago
1.5ft
