Who is he fooling? You do not need foreign powers to exploit land and have it plundered. This paradigm is true even when absent of external forces. As usual Parenti is very selective on his read of history because he is very selective is his view of reality.

Socialism and/or religion are common factors in underdeveloped countries. Socialism creates accidental disicentives...ooops...caused by equal distribution of wealth. The citizens are paid equally whether educated or uneducated...and why spend the family's money on sending the children through college? Humanity responds to rewards by nature, read B.F. Skinner.

Socialism has actually improved the working class of many poor countries...that is, before they were all bombed or overthrown by the US and its coups.

@riverlioness and work is a shameful occupation that cannot possibly rewarded equally or, blasphemy, more than somebody that spent years in schools (on working class payed taxes) learning how to demand more benefits. Physical work is hard, sustains millions and feeds the economy. The rest... necessary and parasitic paperwork. And some nicely wrapped ideas. As long as you eat (work), sleep inside a house (work), walk the streets (work) and flush the toilet (work) don't give us this bullshit.

@riverlioness and one more important fact: in socialism education of all degrees is FREE! The family doesn't need to feed the banks waiting for their mediocre offspring to buy itself a place in college. If it has a functioning brain and the WILL to learn it will get into college on it's own merits.
