While Greece has adequate animal welfare laws, they are NOT enforced, but when visitors to Greece write to the Greek authorities re animal abuse etc, the reply is a pack of lies ... the usual waffle about people being 'sensitive' and about their wonderful animal welfare laws..... when confronted with the truth (I have sent many letters by registered post over the years, with photos & other evidence - not one reply received!), they remain silent.

I started our charity, Greek Animal Rescue, after a nightmare 'holiday' in Greece in 1987 and we have been actively helping many of those who carry out rescue work etc since then ........... cont.
I have been visiting Greece annually (NOT as a tourist) since 1987 and I'm sorry to say that I see countless sights of skinny strays every year, numerous dogs who are kept chained 24/7, often with just a rusty oil drum for 'shelter'..... freezing in winter & like an oven in the summer.
My husband and I have adopted a number of dogs from Greece (have currently SIX), some disabled & victims of deliberate cruelty, like Bonzo, whose tendons on his hind legs were deliberately severed in 2000 (subsequent operations in the UK cost almost £4,000) on Crete .... Mala, whom we adopted in July 2008, was also a victim of abuse ... she had been shot in the face & lost a big part of her nose & right cheek, but she's a very happy girl now....
Almost daily we receive desperate calls for help from tourists on holiday in Greece who have 'found' an injured, sick or skinny dog or cat and are trying to find help for them ..... Look at the slide shows: 'Animal abuse in Greece' and 'Animal abuse in Kos - Greece' ..... tragically the slide shows feature what is the real 'GREEK TRAGEDY'.... I know the story behind every photo - date & place where taken....
I likes to thank you and your husband what you does for our poor animals, without you things would be so more bad. I have big shame and very heavy heart.

I have many similar pictures of dogs in Greece, some taken by me. There's animal cruelty in every country, including of course the UK, but in the UK a dog in such awful condition wouldn't remain on the street for even one day after it's been seen by a few people, while in Greece hundreds of people would walk past and not 'notice' the dog. If that were not the case, photos such as this one would be a rarity.... sadly, it's not!!
