I became a music fan right after Jimi Hendrix death. I can't speak to all of his playing. But this particular solo is my favorite, Free Ride, Lynryd Skynrd next
tina turner doing the back up vocals. pretty awesome especially the middle part. read they had to rehearse 2 days straight just to get the back up vocals after the guitar solo.
@jmat412 Sounds like BS to me. I had the LP and all the musicians as well as the vocals were listed with pictures and I don't recall TT being among them.
@BA5966 I read this too. The story is that Tina and the Ikettes (or whatever Ike and Tina's backup singers were called) did this. Tina was really proud of it (she should be - amazing vocal performance) and played it for Ike, and he was like, what the fuck is this shit? I.e. it's weird.
@gyniest Just looked up the wiki page of this album and it says TT and the Ikettes or whatever were uncredited back-up singers. Thanks very much and you learn something every day. If we can trust wiki, that is...
Frank Zappa made Jimmy Hendricks look like spanky... This guy was Mozart of the 20th century... You would be suprised at how much you have heard his music and didn't know it by name anyways. Wasn't just his crazy albums folks................ This guy made his money composing formal music and had fun blowing it on his crazy fun stuff. Check it out!
I read once that he would fine his band members up to 300.00 per note while recording when they F'd up whilst recording in the studio!!! ..True story!
Saw "Zappa Plays Zappa" on the 29th of November (2011) and they opened with this! Phenomenal gig, it was technically brilliant. Dweezil did his father proud! So grateful to have been there, it was a fantastic night! I urge EVERYONE to go if they can!
so much going on and having it all come together is truly amazing, the man was a genius....and never got the recognition he deserves. (yippy yi yo ty yay!)
As a clasically trained musician; this arrangment and composition is very complex and creative. this man is a n inovator, and thats real talk.ps. ask George Duke.
Some of you seem uncomfortable with the lryical content, and the sarcastic way it's delivered. I prefer my limitless music with wit and irony, turning over all the rocks of human shortcomings, so we can all see ourselves better.......thats why Tull & Zappa et al, works for me!
@willicat441 So do I. The lyrical content of "Montana" is a rather slyly executed spoof on the American Dream in the open frontier. This song's got strong literary value along with the amazing musical composition and performance. It is one of Zappa's finest!
It's so cool...so cool...then he opens his mouth and starts talking....sorry....been trying to like this stuff for 20 years and just can't get past the vocals. My failing....
@FrankZappy Ever see the Steve Vai interview, where he said that he almost didn't get the gig with Zappa because he couldn't play some stuff Zappa showed him? Where Vai whined, "I can't play THAT! NO ONE can play that!" To which FZ replied, "I think Linda Rondstat's looking for a guitarist," and walked away? LOL Apparently, Zappa's standards for those in his band were as high as his standards for himself. Imagine having a band that Steve Vai isn't good enough to be in? LOL
@ProgBassistPhx That was probably just FZ's snide humour in play. Classic line though! Napoleon's story of getting into the band is great too. Zappa just walked up to him after watching him sing in a Hawaiian nightclub and said "Hello, my name is Frank Zappa, and you are my new Lead Vocalist." FZ asked him to drop in for an audition whenever he could. Napoleon went along just to meet George Duke. His 'audition' was to sit and listen. If he liked the music, he had the job. What a way to get in!
I consider myself exposed to many different genres of music & artists. I don't know how I made it thus far in life without hearing a Zappa song until I started listening to satellite radio. This was the first Zappa tune I heard. I love his art-He is way before his time-He was doing shit then that was probably so much harder than doing it these days with the help of computers. He is a genius.
Just LISTEN to the stuff goin' on in this tune!!! Then listen to the lyrics. Then listen to the whole thing, lean back and appreciate Zappa's talent....
Had the privelege and pleasure of seeing Frank and the Mothers live in Dallas in the 70s. Cheerleaders with flaming batons, strobes and all. Yippie I Oh Ky Yay. Left that show with a then new found respect for Frank as a guitar player. Of course, many of his recordings have dozens of overdubs which can't be reproduced live.
I bought this "8-track" when I was 17. My mom thought I was on serious drugs listening to this on a crappy stereo system ( I bought at K-mart). I'm 53 now (with grand-kids) and the music and talent is more great to me now as then.
I love these recordings. I love equally, my vivid and detailed memories of seeing Frank play live, starting in about 1967... watching the different incarnations of the Mothers of Invention develop, then under the name of just Frank Zappa. I saw probably 10-15 different shows over the years, all great. With the possible exception of Duke Ellington, Frank was probably the greatest American bandleader ever, in terms of bringing out the best in the brilliant players that passed through his bands.
Every person who loves Frank Zappa's songs knows that these compositions are complex. If you can't understand this complex composition you don't love it.
@CUBALAW Sometimes its hard to hear through the sophomoric lyrics; I'm afraid, along with Zappa's own ability to still have pop sensibilities even when hes breaking down its barriers.
@CUBALAW the time changes and key changes are nuts and live he played this soooo tight ide loooove to see someone do this just like him as ive never gotten to see zappa...but how i can only imagine god this stuff is so intricate!
Rippin fuckin guitar solos.... frank zappa was a musical genius.... this song, i am the slime and dynamoh hum.... overnite sensation is a classic fucking album....
@kevenharbour mejor oye a la puta de lady caca o el gay de la justina, este es la mejor musica que se ha escuchado, y ni ellos ni la mierda de ahora se le comparan, es mas no le llegan ni a la punta del bigote que el usaba
Not many people know this but the zap was a genius composer and wrote symphonies for his real living. This was his fun stuff. Try to copy it. Montana is an uncopied studio origional that blows female vocals to dust in origionality and difficulty let alone his lead on the SG. He must have been on alot of coffee those days he took the origional takes. His female (fabulous) singers on that album never worked with him again. Actually he was a real dick personally. Cool tune, farrrrt.
