How did she die by the way? I googled it, and some say it was heroin overdose, others say it was a bear attack, others say it was heavy drinking that lead to liver failure ....hmm.
Thank you dad and mom for sharing this wonderful era of music with me. I will pass it on to your grand children. You guys were so fortunate to go see all those amazing artists.
60's. Back then, of course, I was too full of youth and adrenalin to appreciate the quality and depth of a singer and song like this. But I certainly do now. I'm hoping that kids today who are focusing on the whipped cream fluff and tuneless violent crap that passes for much of the music today will one day feel the same. It must come with age and reflection. This is the real thing. Billie Holiday lives.
"So I smoke a little to much, and I joke a little too much, and the tunes I request are not always the best but the ones where the trumpets *blare*, so I go at a maddening pace and pretend that it's taking his place but what else can you do at the end of a love *affair*? The lyrics are stupendous too. Notice how "trumpets blare" rhymes with "love affair"? Who wrote the lyrics? This is the torch song par excellence.
For me this was Billie's greatest era.Pure beauty ,swing and blues and pathos. This is singing of the highest degree. You cannot teach this you've gotta live it.
oh thank you for putting this up, really, there's nobody like Billie, and she sings this song so beautifully. There's a certain quality to her voice that you can rarely find, I totally agree with Abrumador8 in the poignancy in her voice. You could always hear her singing her life. Such emotion in her singing. Thank you so much. Billie we love you!
Thanks for uploading this great song, I wish the first part wasn't cut off. I tried to find who wrote it but the only name I could find was Edward C. Redding. It's been recorded by a lot of singers and Billie sings it very well here.
This recording, with Ray Ellis conducting his own arrangement, was from her last studio album, "Lady In Satin" {originally omitted from the initial stereo releases of the album}, recorded in February 1958.
Just to clarify my previous comment....Lady Day's voice was sultry, unique & timeless, from the beginning of her career right through to the end... Like I'm tellin ya somethin you don't already know :~)
I love the early pics of Lady Day...when her body & voice were strong & healthy. The latter pics cut deep & are so painful to view...to contrast them with the early pics & see the harsh toll heroine & alcohol had taken on her beautiul face & voice. What a huge loss we all experienced from it. Gone, but never forgotten...the world was blessed to have you Lady Day, if only for a short while
This is absolutely FANTASTIC! I've long been an avid Lady Day fan and thought I had seen most of the still pics available but you've posted many that are new to me. And I love that you've chosen a song unfamiliar to many (unlike "God Bless the Child", "Strange Fruit", etc) but I truly believe it to be one of her best.
It took a long time for me not to equate sadness to every song Billie sang. There had to be joy in her life and that's how I now like to think of her.
To hear her sing brings me great joy in knowing she is now so safe.
"The end of a love affair"......perfect to describe Billie´s adventure in the heart of her millions of fans......I wonder why this goddess passed away so soon....it is not fair.....there are no justice in this planet.....only God knows......love you Billie...
One of my all time favorite songs. I'm just beginning to appreciate Ms. Holliday. That this song is one of her last recordings is even more haunting. Beautiful song
this is a beautiful song! i have some of her music and i am growing to love and appreciate her gift all the more! billie was the one!!! i've never felt what i feel when i listen to her from any other singer! this is jazz!!!
This song speaks volumes on Billie Holiday. Much of her work seemed autobiographical and personal. This a beautiful montage and song selection. Billie Holiday is timeless.
What a wonderful tribute to this brilliant singer. She has left us many treasures. Thank you for this fabulous upload.

If Billie Holliday ever did a song badly I haven't heard it. Beautiful lyric, arrangement, and singer--what more can anyone ask of a recording?

Some of her images remind me of Frida Kahlo. There was something in common between the two?.
The voice of Billie Holiday had something poignant unparalleled in any of the other "ladies of jazz".
