  • I wonder what hes thinking through all this.. I wonder if he counts 1234 1234 1234 all the way through?

  • i wonder how many snare heads he went through...per hour...

  • Buddy is GOD... Vinnie is Christ!

  • His Bass Drum Rips my Soul Out

  • he can do more on his godly left hand than on my four limbs...makes me sick. buddy the god of drums period!!!

  • greatest left hand ever ......absolutely incredible!!!!.

  • Mesmerising. I was fortunate enough to see him, over here in London, twice. A truly great drummer, if not, the best drummer EVER. Him and Louis Belson. Fan-bloody-tastic !

  • I was luck enough to see Buddy perform before his death. The talent was simply amazing. His hands set the standard still. I still think Bonham had the best footwork.

  • ok

    1. this is fucking cool

    2. i don't play drums, but watching the drummer in my band i can't help but think that this guy kind of has bad technique? any drummers? yay or nay?

  • @n0possibility FUCKING NAY. Buddy Rich's technique is incredible. one of the best ive ever seen. period.

  • i think buddy rich invented blast beats...

  • This is so awesome it is insane. Thank you for posting, and thank God, plus whomever, for YT. As a kid, I had heard of and seen cartoon caricatures of Gene Kruppa, but until You Tube, I had only "heard of" Buddy Rich. Without YT and some educated souls who took the effort to share their observations of drum excellence with strangers, I never would have had the pleasure of seeing and hearing BR play. Usually one can say that no matter how good one is, there is always someone better....show me.

  • is he still alive? please someone reply : ]

  • @722erodz no he is not still alive

  • every technical aspect of musicianship is always improved on. every great drummer from the 50's through the 80's even is easily matched by today's players on a physical level. same goes for guitars, bass, keys whatever but buddy is a freak. on the technical side what he was doing 40 or 50 years ago easily matches todays players. i think he was a evolutionary one of a kind specimen.

and on the cerebral side he was a genius also. the perfect drummer

  • Buddy is to drums what Jimi was to guitar -- originals who will always be known as the ones who broke it wide fucking open!

  • 2:00 it sounds like a gatlin gun

  • I was fortunate enough to hear Buddy and his orchestra in person, twice -- great stuff:) --

  • what douche bag compared Buddy Rich to Joey Jordison?? Buddy could play faster than any of those posy metal drummers!! And he did it in a 3 piece!!! FUCK YEAH!!!

  • He is the godfather , hands down

  • what cymbals did buddy use back then?

  • hahaha. i cant drum in dress shoes and a suit. its impossible. i drum barefoot. hahaha

  • And he does this while wearing a 3-Piece suit !!!! FUCK ME!!!

  • I fuckin' love the sound of those drums.

  • I agree, but lets not forget Dennis Chambers n Tony Royster Jr, who was taught by Dennis. Check out "Tony Royster with ASAP" ...he's an alien monster on drums!

  • I think the fact that buddy was into martial arts really helped his control when playing drums. alot of people didn't know that was a 7th degree black belt in karate.

  • promise not to laugh. i love buddy vs. animal(muppets)

  • it's not just his fast playing. It's his control. paradiddles, etc.

  • buddy certainly could make the snare drum his bitch. not to forget the whole set, but i mean really... his snare work is ridiculous. on top of that i can't believe he plays like this wearing a fucking suit! he must have been sweating his balls off

  • @baller46254 Two totally different genres. You can't compare them. I've heard jazz drummers attempt rock that sucked at it.

  • Buddy Rich was ALWAYS in his prime!

  • All he's doing is playing extremely fast. Why do people consider him the next coming of jesus in drumming?

  • @orugnet Who do you like?

  • what kind of snare is that?

  • A couple things. It sounds like the ride tom & the 1st floor tom are tuned the same. I can't hear the interval. The 2nd floor tom doesn't even sound much different to me. 2nd, they faded out the video before he got to the now famous "stick trick". At least we can still hear the audio. And last, but really the most importand, is the drumming technique displayed here not only holds up very well and is outstanding even by today's standards, at the time, this was absolutely over the top!

  • @1wayne12345 wtf are you on about??!! listen to the differance between the rack and floor toms between the :10 and :15 second points, big diff.

  • I listened agin, still don't hear it. Doesn't really matte thoughr, the drumming is still over the top.

  • @1wayne12345 agreed

  • he was loose wit the hands and loose with the lips i heard his cursing out his crew then he threw them out the bus.but he is still the truth

  • Yea l heard stories like that too, Buddy was a tough SOB. Although he was only out for perfection, and he got it, or else it was the AXE! lol

  • grandpa rocks!!! but its written on his face that he was an ahole:) cool one thou... let him rest in peace

  • Why Not GPMusicc

  • Lol at 0:26 why is he hitting the bass drum with his stick?

  • ever heard of the amazing eddy tanh?

  • thats how he rolls.

  • you are punny

  • Because he can, lol

  • The negative comments on Buddy are mostly true with regards to his personality, but !

If you have something negative to say about his playing then you are on the opposite side of the fence from all the top drummers in the world.

Prima dona btw and it refers to the #1 opera lady...the top chick on stage...well Buddy was always top dog on stage from before he was 10.

Fender: back up your words with a video of you on the skins.

  • Yes, I'm serious. Buddy's a wanker! I've heard drunks in the alley banging on garbage can lids who sound better! Bobby Brady on an episode of the Brady Bunch, got a new kit once and his solo was better. Look--Neil Peart is a lot better--face it! Jerry Mercer now retired from April Wine---better as well! Buddy is decent for sure, but his personality---asshole all the way!

  • @fender4444 Pft neil peart. If you really knew what you wer talking about then you would know that buddy rich was an influence of neils.

  • ?? Are u serious ??

Listen to Peart talk about Buddy... It's always with admiration as to how much Buddy blows him away.

  • this is so funny because hes playing faster than most drummers ever could and still people say that joey jordison is a good drummer

  • 1. nice name

    2. joey jordison is TERRIBLE. people like this deserve the fame

  • @fleaOWNS It's not his fault everybody's overrating him. Joey is a good drummer. If he's not that good as Buddy, that doesn't mean he's "TERRIBLE" : P

  • @jonovaz you're right XD

  • holy shit.......i think if keith moon or neil peart ever tried imitating rich, they would have shit all over their drums and explode.

  • the greatest left hand ever.

  • woooo slow down grandpop i dont want ur arms getting sweety

  • mind blowing

obviously no-one in history has ever come close to him........and never will

    .

  • You are so right bigcherry. I saw him live in the 80's, blew me away....

  • Was he playing Beethoven or Mozart?

  • my god! hes doing all that in a suit!!!

  • Buddy Rich is amazing.

  • GOD

  • CONTROL

  • Phil Collins?

  • phil collins is not the best PERIOD !!!!!!

  • Love that snare drum sound. Damn his strokes are so clean.

  • dumb ass mofo !!! bro...

  • without drums there is no backbone to the song.......if u think drums are so easy lets see u play

  • You're wrong

  • Snoopy is a twat.

  • That is the most ignorant thing I have ever heard anyone say about anything.

  • its harder than you think you need to know time you need to kno patterens you need to know rythm its no all about just bashing on them you need to know what your doing

  • You must be the biggest asshole on the planet.

  • Actually, on a less sarcastic note, Buddy sang on a few records. Good luck finding them, but "Buddy Rich Sings John Mercer" and "Buddy Rich just Sings" are indeed two very real albums. So i think now its relatively safe to say "fuck Phil Collins"?

  • @leftpuman Idiot.

  • what'd i say?

  • I laughed my ass off when I read this, very nice,

  • idiot....go perform a double stroke roll and get back to us...

    see you in 5 years

  • Buddy didn't mind Ginger Baker

  • you don't know what your talking about...

  • Travis Barker sucks horribly bad,

go listen to your fucking 'soulja boy' remix. Buddy Rich is undeniably the greatest drummer that has lived, I would love to hear Travis Barker and his groove style play this.

  • lolol LOLOLOLOL

I am dying here....please please keep talking.....

  • haha travis barker groove? never seen it.

sure hes a good drummer for his genre, maybe even the best. But he is no where near the level of buddy

  • 1.Buddy Rich

    2. Neil Peart

    3.Ed Shaughnessy

4.John Bonham They are my favorite drummers of all time, Just my opinion though.

  • one more, Gene Krupa

  • and another: Steve Smith

  • @mitchbrewers well thats a damn good opinion if you ask me

  • Um, yeah.

  • That was from of his many "Tonight Show" appearences. Buddy and Johnny were good friends.

  • they maybe be able to solo like this, but i'd love to hear them play time like he does

  • KhaosSoulFury this better be a fucking joke

  • maybe now there are 2 in every city, but back in the day very few could match this type of playing . . . many of the drummers today wouldn't even be around without Buddy Rich

  • and a black belder in karate!!

  • man is he fast

  • AMAZING chops. Amazing talent. But he was such an ass hole.

Did you know he didn't know how to read music? The way he would learn a tune.. He'd have a guy play it for him once. And that was all he needed. Then he just sits down and does THAT. Pretty awesome huh?

  • He's... amazing!!!

  • holy shit batman

  • No question, Buddy be the man

  • Wow, a lot of fucking retards realize how little talent Travis Barker has. And all the Travis nut huggers can't spell for shit. Buddy is the fucking man. Educate yourself in music you fanboys.

  • travis barker has chops....he just chooses to play what many of us consider to be lousy music....

I guess you can sum up travis barker like this: sellout...good musician who plays crappy music for large amounts of cash

I wouldn't argue with someone if they said travis could hang with a Big Band...but.....blink182 sucks so who even cares what that guy does???

  • If he has chops, good ones, I haven't seen or heard em. Wouldn't he be dissatisfied only doing Blink182 if that were the case? Does he do any session work? I know I would in his shoes, but only if I was good enough.

  • Buddy played a chair with drumsticks as a vaudville act when he was a kid."Traps the Boy Wonder". Buddy has techiques that no one has...or if has..uses them quite like Buddy.

Buddy was a mean bastard...but he was a master drummer and knew what it meant to DRIVE a band!

  • Rich is not my favourite drummer but hell man. His technique is fucking amazing. I can't grasp some things he's doing. Some times like these I realise I have many decades of practise to come.

And Travis Barker's name shouldn't have been mentioned in a Buddy Rich's vid. It's a disgrace.

  • ehh, he's alright

  • Greatest drummer of all time.... The standard by which all drummers, past, present and future are judged!

  • you are so right my friend. fastest left hand I have ever seen...had quite a temper though

  • Holy Crap ..think of this, playing this hard with a 3 piece suit, and the hot lights, a true proffesional, and one hell of a drummer and drum pioneer.

  • he plays faster with one hand than I can with two....lol

  • I think that Buddy was in his prime from the start to the end of his life.

  • okay buddy rich battling max roach?

  • id love to watch that,,,

  • lol i love the description for this video

  • Great point uiwqe, it all starts with rudiments...

  • now i know where carl palmer learned how to do single strokes between his hand and foot.

  • I heard him live many times, and met him at Berklee. Buddy was the very best. Incredible. One of a kind, for all time.

  • With due respect, there is no better drummer than Buddy Rich. He set the standard. You may not like his stlye, but you cannot deny his talent

  • The inovator of blastbeats LOL

  • whoa is buzz rolls actually sound like bees buzzing wow great drummer

  • His snare work was simply unreal. My favorite drummer.

As for all the Travis Barker bickering. Yeah, I think skill wise he's overrated, but he's got extreme attitude and style which, to me, is a plus for live shows.

Basically, if you only heard a Barker solo, you might think "meh, pretty good", but, if you saw him do that same solo it would seem so much better.

When in comes to live drumming, there's more at play than just your sticks. "You" become part of the act. Barker knows that.

  • you need to chek out travis barkers snair werk he wood pwn this fucking noob with 1 arm you tool

  • thats a joke right?

  • i hate to break it to you dude, but the band geeks in my school drum line can play that snare "solo". not impressive. not...one....bit (joker voice) lol

  • sorry man...

what a load of pish.. im a barker fan.. not one of them peepo tht hate his guts..

but seriously.. u gotta respect the creators man ..

  • First off, learn how to spell "snare." Second, Travis Barker's snare video is the most over-rated piece of shit I have ever seen. Lastly, I hope you're not a drummer, because you are a disgrace to the entire drumming world trying to compare that worthless video to one of the greatest of all time.

  • dude.. got a spelling disorder?

  • I could almost outplay travis. Raised cymbals and playing like a mad monkey does not give you talent. I personally don't endorse the fast things buddy plays but I would never deny his genius. Get a drum teacher and ask him why Buddy Rich is considerd the Father of drums. Travis Barker is not more then a above average punk drummer.

  • teach the ass how to spell douchebag as well

  • @travisBrulzz Wow i hope this kid isn't serious. And calling buddy rich a n00b? Show some respect.

  • Wow, Buddy is working the snare like mofo, man. Fantastic.

Why do so many have to argue on YouTube? There are tonnes of incredible musicians in this world. Your favourite might not be someone else's. Big deal. Relax your ego and accept that folks have differing tastes and opinions. Buddy Rich is one of the all-time great drummers, no question. Is he the best? That depends on who you are and what you like.

Artistic people don't argue such nonsense. We appreciate passion and craftmanship.

  • It's funny because most real drummers know this. Not to mention the actual drummers doin the shit. They realize different drummers do different shit. These guys arguin over the shit are just punks that probably don't know the first thing about drumming.

  • In my world, and most other professional musicians', if a perfomer plays his gig in such a way that he accomplishes the express musical intent, and artistic and mechanical aim, he's an accomplished musician. Period. Some players are more technically proficient, and some less so, but what matters, ultimately, is ... do they play something that moves the audience?

The world is full of stunning musicians. many for vastly different reasons.

  • Exactly. See if you look hard enough, there are competent people on Youtube.

But holy shit do you have to dig deep to find them.

  • Thanks, brother.

I am an old fart (39), and, boy, do I wish I had something like YouTube when I was a teenager. Young people today act like spoiled and poorly reared brats behind all this anonymous technology.

Hell, you'd think they'd be a little more appreciative. Not to suggest there aren't classy teens out there, but ... like you say, got to dig deep, man.

Oh, yeah: Buddy's smokin' in this clip. What a monster.

  • all the stuff that this doesn't contain is definitely there. you only forgot to put that it does contain one gigantic douche that posted it up on youtube. keep up the good work, ass.

  • People...Isn't it clear to you by now that the couple of children that come here saying that Travis Barker is better than Buddy Rich are just that? CHILDREN, trying to make waves online. Funny thing is that they are getting some of you all riled up over nothing.

I mean come on...We all KNOW that Barker doesn't even come close to Buddy's skills. What a freaking joke to even imagine comparing the 2.

    Wake up....Ignore these clowns!

  • his left hand alone runs rings around Travis Barker, no diss on him, but cmon guys

  • ok wtf?! 2:13 wth is the crowd doing?!! lololololol!

  • take that all you heavy metal speed metal speed drumming fans! this is the original speed drummer! kick ass of all time!

  • I like speed metal, and I still think Buddy is the best drummer ever.

    Dumbfuck.

  • I hope you are not talking to me

  • No sir, my comment was directed at steve89z

  • lol

  • your a fucking idiot.

  • youre obviously completely uneducated musically....you are an ignorant fuck who has no idea what the fuck he is talking about.....go fuck yourself and stop making blatantly idiotic remarks you scummy fuck.

  • sean rickman "popeye" ...watch him

  • Buddy Rich....The standard by which all drummers, past, present and future are and will be judged...

And, by the way Travis Barker is a freakin' joke

  • i wouldnt go as far to say Travis is a joke. as buddy says "all drummers are an influence"

  • well... buddy might say that but that depends if he would even consider travis a drummer

  • Comment removed

  • Buddy is always brilliant and never boring, the same as Gene Krupa was. Todays drummers don't have that. Carl Palmer is great out of the current crop, but too gimmicky. Travis Barker is just a joke.

  • Did it ever occcur to the Travis Barker fans that his drumming does not swing. I would love to see him drive a Bigband like Buddy did. Travis would do well to study Neil Peart before he even thinks about being compared with Buddy Rich

  • It's always a pleasure to see and hear Mr. Rich play. He shows us what excellence is and what we should all strive to be (as drummers).

  • Buddy Rich is the Messiah on drums. there will never be anyone like him.

p.s. dawgkita, love how you keyworded the comment field so that everyone on youtube could see it. :)

  • Alright that's it. I'm so sick of people who think that Travis Barker is soooo much better than Buddy Rich.

First of all Buddy Rich is much better than Barker will ever be.

Second, why must all Barker fans be such a holes about it?

they always say stuff like the above comment.

    Merry Christmas

  • Travis Barker is an over rated drummer, he is a niche drummer capable of one style of drumming. He also gained most of his popularity based solely on his image and not his skill. Most of you kids base your opinions on how fast a drummer can play, and you never take in account all the other important things drummers need to be capable of. Buddy Rich did more for the art of drumming than any of the current drummers today have. Period...........

  • firstcircle04:

While I agree that Buddy "did more for the art of drumming than any of the current drummers today", I will say in Travis' defense that he does have more than one style of drumming. He's played punk, ska, and hip-hop, as well as saying that he wants to finish his career with jazz drumming under his belt.

That being said, I also agree with your statement,"Travis Barker is an over rated drummer".

  • buddy mastered many hand techniques and practically invented new ones. travis has only mastered a couple. punk, ska and hip hop are all very similar to play and have a small spectrum when it comes to drumming. jazz drumming has a huge spectrum 10x all them put together. buddy rich was the best at exploring that spectrum.
