  • Man I just love M Bloomfield. what a cool guy that the world lost too soon

  • Back in around 1986 I had this bootleg kind of cassette which read Mike Bloomfield but was really Electric Flag,It was grade 7 and I was cruising the hallways with my Sony F1 walkman grooving out with The Electric Flag along with Crimson,Airplane,Quicksilver and many others.........waiting for vinyl reissues to come out. Mike Bloomfield is a kicking guitarist.

  • Monterrey Pop Festival The Electric Flag Singing By Nick Gravites vocals an Drums Buddy Miles

  • I have always wonder what people found so great about Bloomfield - I just do not get it....but then I don't get a lot of things.

  • @SmileyGarrish

Very Jazzy phrasing, and a great vibrato. Instantly recognizable tone. He may not be the best guitarist, but ultimately there are a million and one great blues guitarists and shredders these days, but only one Bloomfield.

When it comes to musicians and guitarists in particular people need to forget about the technical aspect, because ultimately that's less than fifty percent of who they really are.A strong impression of the man is given simply through the notes.

  • @Carthsgtr "Great blues guitarists"What are u talkin about man?Are u serious?Ultimatley there are a million of...what?If u are talking about what the "blues"is...u're on the wrong side man!Sean Costello was probably the last man who could play the blues,'cause he got the blues.Who else?Yes...John Mayall! But don't tell me please that these fuckin' modern"musicians" can play the blues. They don't...peace and love man.I appreciated the second part of ur speech!

  • @michaelbrigante

I meant from a technical standpoint. I totally agree with what you said.

  • @SmileyGarrish

These days it's all processed to the point of absolute shit and all that can be heard is digital effects, the mixing technique and what I feel is a certain level of arrogance based on their technical proficiency.

Still, it's still opinion (to a certain degree!) and I would love to hear who you held in high regard.

  • Who's on drums? I recognize his face...

  • @ASFM11 Buddy Miles, who was later in Band of Gypsies with Hendrix

  • I want more!!

  • with the great Harvey Brooks on bass ...it dosen't get any better then that

  • amazing fucking band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is that Buddy Miles on drums

  • @SRV1DOORS1HENDRIX1 Yup....Buddy Miles in the flesh.....

  • @drumsyeah That's sheer Awsomeness right there.

  • Bloomfield is a total underrated guitarist,I remember owning a Electric Flag cassette in around 1986 grade 7,They all thought I was mad waltzing down the hall with my Sony F1 walkman listening to The Flag......NO U2 or Duran Duran here kiddies.

  • God's guitarist.. m bloomfield.

  • My jaw was droppin ALL da time ?

  • Bloomfield bought that LP from Dan Erlewine.

  • man what a solo

  • Nicky G. & B. Miles!!

  • The real blues ended when Muddy Waters plugged in.

  • @danbrooklin if muddy waters didn't plug in blues probably wouldn't be around today

  • In the USA Mike Bloomfield was like Clapton in the mid 60's in UK.Every body wanted to sound & play like him.<That's what Robbie krager of the Doors said.

  • @Bluezking krieger

  • @Bluezking aside from krieger's statements --that was a plain fact. mike bloomfield was the original american guitar hero. clapton and hendrix looked up to him and were heavily influenced by him.

  • I just built a time machine! Guess where I'm going...

  • @AbovePerfect 1748?

  • @AbovePerfect getting that happy meal toy you never got?

  • @AbovePerfect is there room for one more? =)

  • Gibson Les Paul is the blues .

  • Yea it's Buddy and the rest of the Electric Flag.....Nice!

  • My jaw hit the floor at 2:14 for sure.

  • For me, it was at 1:13.

  • I would define Buddy Miles's style as RAW. genius!

  • definitely buddy miles on drums.

  • This isn't Mike's famous '59 Les Paul is it. That guitar had Grovers.

  • @s1914 . Check 2:17, it has tulips!

  • @s1914 He may have had the tuners changed after Monterey.

  • @s1914 He replaced them with the grovers man... You know that different tuners on a guitar doesn't mean a complete substitute right? Page did exactly the same, there's footage of him using his LP with the the stock Kluson tulips in the late 60's before he changed to the button styled Grovers.

  • @jimmyzo3o It seems you are absolutely right. Apparently he changed them for Grovers sometime in the couple of months after this gig. Thanks for the heads up.

  • @jimmyzo3o Ya, Pagey changed them two months after getting #1 from Joe Walsh.

  • Eeeeeasily one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard.

  • @phloydrix I know, right?

  • makes me proud to own a les paul

  • What happened to the microphones?

  • It has to be said - Michael Bloomfield - much forgotten and as a guitarist far more stylish and elegant, far more musical, far more agressive, far more tonal than those usual "guitar gods".... Strings and fingers, no stomp boxes, yet a massive and distinct tone.

  • details on mikes death? heheheee

  • @sylicone221 Overdose on synthetic heroin and cocaine (from what I have read).

  • @ZackPomerleau what u mean synthetic? hehehee....was it speedball.....?

  • @sylicone221 The story goes he went to a party to try some new 'synthetic' heroin, and when he OD'd the others injected him with cocaine to restart his heart (with the logic that cocaine speeds up your heart rate). Just something I've read.

  • @ZackPomerleau was it like belushi? was this guy really famous? or d lister

  • @ZackPomerleau ok was it like belushi and was this news like belushi's death?

  • I think that was my dad at 1:24.

  • I am pissed that the volume on my Computer doesn't go any higher. :(

  • @BamBam00008

I tried to turn it up to 11 but I've worn it out....

  • i cant stop listening

  • 0:47 thats all.

  • Comment removed

  • Listen to the tone of that Lester, I have wood. Satan how much is a soul going for these days?

  • worm food hehehee....junkie

  • good riddance junkie eheheheee

  • Can't say enough to the positive about Bloomfield and his guitar playing. He played at the old LaCave on the east side in Cleveland with the Butterfield Blues Band (probably as big as most people's basements) and tore the place up every time....

  • the note he hits @ 59sec is the greatest note ive ever heard on guitar.

  • i wonder what happened to the backround vocals...u can't hear them...lol

  • WONDERFUL KILLER VIDEO! Cheers! ;-))

  • Great playing. Thank God he didn't drop that guitar!

  • My Aunt,Uncle saw him play many times in Chi town. They turned me on to Michael. He definitely deserves a place in the Rock Pantheon of great players. I think he played as good if not better than Harvey Mandel or Wayne Perkins. He rivals Green,Clapton, Beck Mick Taylor. He just had tone, how did he get that TONE. And yes, that is Buddy Miles. D.Platt

  • why isnt anybody paying the slightest attention to the guy at 1:24

  • The Electric Flag: easily one of the best bands ever.

  • bloomfield was crazy

  • They were the best for their time and were the pioneers of electric blues and rock. First time I got high I felt like I was floating listening to " We're Just Sittin' Round in Circles". The start of 34 wonderful years of adventures.

  • this guy is possessd by the Blues

  • now i know why bloomfield played hunched, that beautiful chunk of wood hanging arounf=d his neck is so heavy.

  • enrgia e tecnica sou fa viva blues-rock para sempre

  • he's VERY good

  • original wiggers

  • this is The Electric Flag live at Monterey, CA. Wonderful.

  • Awesome playing here!!

  • Mike wasn't just a great player himself, he was an inspiration for others to play their best. Buddy Miles, probably only 19 here, is playing his heart out like never before or since. Mike, only 25, leads the Flag like the old pro he actually is.

  • is that ozzy at around 0:51 ?

  • What's going on with the loud rapidly strummed ending chord at the end, when Bloomfield is doing other stuff on the guitar? Was there a rhythm guitarist, or is that the organ, or...did they add stuff to this later in the studio? 2:22

  • @strandwolf Thats the combination of all the instruments and the drums, it gives the illusion of a guitar.

  • @yanis3 Yeah sure....I'll buy your bridge too.

  • I love the audience response at the end of this, especially the young lady jumping up and down and the chap behind her (wearing a beige/tan jacket) gesticulating wildly with his left hand. Pure joy.

I wonder where all of the people in the audience are now (if they're still alive). Videos like these are so precious.

  • Long live Mike Bloomfield.

  • whats a les paul man wow

  • Such a great tone....

  • LOL @ 1:28 !!!!

  • Did anyone else feel their jaw drop to the floor at exactly 1:01.

  • yes

  • @Fruscianteistheman had to wipe the drool off my chin

  • Dan Erlewine told me that he traded Mike that LP for Mike's Tele

  • This is the electric flag.

The remaining members plus buttrerfield alumni play occasionally in Chicago.

Check out"from the bottom" interveiws with the bass player Harvey mandel on youtube

  • 俺はこの人の大大大ファンなんだぜぃ。 i'm a very very very huge fan in the world. それも40年も前からなあ。 for about fourty years before. 俺はニッポンてえ島国のヘタレ素人ギタリスト。 a little amateur guitarist far from far east called nippon な nippon.← japa~n な。 右手にピーターさん、左手にマイコーさん、てなもんや。 peter green in my right hand, and in the left i've been hold my michael everyday てなもんや。 tenamonnya, 分かったか! you know it!
  • I was there!! What I wouldn't give to go back and see it again. It was the very first gig by the Flag at Monterrey Pop. They tore the house down!! There's probably archived footage of the whole gig somewhere.

  • holy fucking shit Bloomfield you are fucking jesus christ reincarnate.

  • R.I.P: two buddies !

  • the golden bear man I haven't heard that name forever. I saw spirit there in 70 wow!!

  • what a beast, check out my 26 best blues and jazz guitarist"s v

    he's number 11

  • This was phenomenal . Bloomfield was one of the greats .

  • rare Electric Flag cut (the studio track is on the album "A Long Time Comin'")? Mike Bloomfield was amazing.

  • @dirtystirt Nice find. Muting maybe?

  • what a show! Summer is coming...

  • Mike jamming in the big easy

  • wow so wait a second is this The Butterfield Band or is it The Electric Flag

  • which one is Les Paul ?

  • I thought that was Buddy Miles, the guy one of the most underated vocalists. There's only 2 that I know of that broke through as premier vocalists, Phil Collins and Don Henley.

Get Super Stills Session, probably his and Al Kooper for one of the most unique blues ever. It's different, but still Chicago blues.

Most of you know that he died of a heroin overdose. So much talent, like Hendrix, may they rest in peace.

  • Yeah!!! it's Buddy Miles on drums!!! What a wonderful vision!! Buddy and Mike we love you forever!!! Thanks guy....

  • This vid is awesome! We want a time machine...

  • R.I.P. Mike Bloomfield and Buddy Miles!

  • Mike was the best guitarist I ever saw (his tone appealed to me the most!). I saw him with Roger Troy on vocals around 74, and also at Winterland, SF. 30 years gone and his wonderful presence is missed deeply. Please see this awesome page:

    mikebloomfieldamericanmusic

  • Amazing how all those people can just sit there, nobody jumpin' up to DANCE!? HeyyyBabyHeyyBaabyHeyyyyyBabyyy!!!

Does anyone have a video of Bloomfield and the Butter band doing Shake Your Money Maker? If so, please post!

  • @EricFlatpick "Amazing how all those people can just sit there, nobody jumpin' up to DANCE!?" Well, they were probably all stoned! Those were the days, you know :-)

  • @dirtystirt

Wow that definitely looks like a pick.... what the hell??!!!

  • Sound of my life!!!

  • For me, and a lot of other guys in that golden couple years, Bloomfield was the guy... he's the reason I played guitar.

  • I read Mike Bloomfields biography "If you love these blues play them as you please" and def. reccomend it. It gives insight into alot of things. For example it talks about Monterey and how Electric Flag felt out of place there and at venues like the Fillmore because of all the heady shit that was going on. Bloomfield wanted to be taken seriously as a musician and felt weird playing to a mostly stoned audience who wouldn't remember what he had played the next day.

  • mike intense..deserves his place in the guitar great pantheon

  • hells yeah it is!

    bloomfield! so cool too!!!

  • is that Buddy Miles on drums?

  • @4runner39 Yes, that's Buddy Miles on drums

  • @4runner39 yep!!

  • @4runner39 Yes, Buddy Miles on drums

  • @4runner39 yeah i saw him too the band is fuckin tight

  • Great band! Bloomfeild is brilliant, one great underated guitarist.

  • RIP mike.....your guitar was insane then and now.....still.....

  • BTW,...Bloomfields idol was BB King!

  • This isn't Butterfield's band, it's The Electric Flag, they put out one great album, then fell apart because half of them (including Bloomfield) were strung out on horse.

  • This is fantastic, and I'm so glad it was finally released by DA Pennebaker a few years ago. The music here is really good and "down to earth" for a crowd which, by all estimates, was about 80 percent bombed on some very powerful "purple acid" making the rounds on that June weekend in 1967.

  • Pick stuck i front of the nut under strings and the strumming at the end doesn't match up with what Mike is playing. Whas his playing overdubbed?

  • @Pecka1 No, I guess he wasn`t. I mean why, they weren`t a big deal then ( commercially ) and the performance was not included in the original monterey movie, wasn`t it.

  • Maybe not huge but well known for a short while as I remember

  • @Pecka1 you moron !

  • lol

  • if hes not playing open strings or notes on he first fret that pick under the strings wont affect his playing. i must admit though that is unusual, ive never anyone do that before

  • Look at all these fucking hipsters.

  • Love it!

  • SkyDog46, Thank you, thank you.

  • This performance with the Electric Flag was MB at his best before the drugs started taking their toll. A reallly inspiring, soulful player with way too short a career.

  • @bertie0184 - IMO he did his best work with Butterfield. Whatever - in 50 years of listening to rock and blues, I've never heard anyone play with as much energy and excitement and enthusiasm as Michael Bloomfield - he had some kind of amazing force inside of him that was uncontainable. RIP.

  • Vectortemple i completely agree. Once you listen to The Paul Butterfield Blues Band you it turns you into some kind of jazz blues hipster...I know i cant go back now, and i dont want to!

    x

  • Why did he leave a spare pick under the strings by the first fret? You think he would have pulled that out of there..How could he even play with that in there? Something is messed up about this.

  • @cleanandoftenseen I don't think it's a spare pick - my guess is it is there to mute the bottom 3 strings. If he is just playing solos and no open strings it could actually work really well.

  • I was there at the Monterey gathering. Bloomfield was rockin n a rollin. At his night show he was sportin an afro. They had ultra violet spot lights in them days and when they shined the spot light on him.....his afro glowed like a purple halo!

  • what did you think when this afro american named jimi hendrix hit the stage that night???please do share

  • Everyone was probably blown the fuck away, because he was so much better than all the other bands.

  • Was Bloomfield there with Wolfdale?
