Back in around 1986 I had this bootleg kind of cassette which read Mike Bloomfield but was really Electric Flag,It was grade 7 and I was cruising the hallways with my Sony F1 walkman grooving out with The Electric Flag along with Crimson,Airplane,Quicksilver and many others.........waiting for vinyl reissues to come out. Mike Bloomfield is a kicking guitarist.
Very Jazzy phrasing, and a great vibrato. Instantly recognizable tone. He may not be the best guitarist, but ultimately there are a million and one great blues guitarists and shredders these days, but only one Bloomfield.
When it comes to musicians and guitarists in particular people need to forget about the technical aspect, because ultimately that's less than fifty percent of who they really are.A strong impression of the man is given simply through the notes.

Still, it's still opinion (to a certain degree!) and I would love to hear who you held in high regard.
Bloomfield is a total underrated guitarist,I remember owning a Electric Flag cassette in around 1986 grade 7,They all thought I was mad waltzing down the hall with my Sony F1 walkman listening to The Flag......NO U2 or Duran Duran here kiddies.
In the USA Mike Bloomfield was like Clapton in the mid 60's in UK.Every body wanted to sound & play like him. That's what Robbie krager of the Doors said.
In the USA Mike Bloomfield was like Clapton in the mid 60's in UK.Every body wanted to sound & play like him.<That's what Robbie krager of the Doors said.
@Bluezking aside from krieger's statements --that was a plain fact. mike bloomfield was the original american guitar hero. clapton and hendrix looked up to him and were heavily influenced by him.
@s1914 He replaced them with the grovers man... You know that different tuners on a guitar doesn't mean a complete substitute right? Page did exactly the same, there's footage of him using his LP with the the stock Kluson tulips in the late 60's before he changed to the button styled Grovers.
@jimmyzo3o It seems you are absolutely right. Apparently he changed them for Grovers sometime in the couple of months after this gig. Thanks for the heads up.
It has to be said - Michael Bloomfield - much forgotten and as a guitarist far more stylish and elegant, far more musical, far more agressive, far more tonal than those usual "guitar gods".... Strings and fingers, no stomp boxes, yet a massive and distinct tone.
@sylicone221 The story goes he went to a party to try some new 'synthetic' heroin, and when he OD'd the others injected him with cocaine to restart his heart (with the logic that cocaine speeds up your heart rate). Just something I've read.
Can't say enough to the positive about Bloomfield and his guitar playing. He played at the old LaCave on the east side in Cleveland with the Butterfield Blues Band (probably as big as most people's basements) and tore the place up every time....
My Aunt,Uncle saw him play many times in Chi town. They turned me on to Michael. He definitely deserves a place in the Rock Pantheon of great players. I think he played as good if not better than Harvey Mandel or Wayne Perkins. He rivals Green,Clapton, Beck Mick Taylor. He just had tone, how did he get that TONE. And yes, that is Buddy Miles. D.Platt
They were the best for their time and were the pioneers of electric blues and rock. First time I got high I felt like I was floating listening to " We're Just Sittin' Round in Circles". The start of 34 wonderful years of adventures.
Mike wasn't just a great player himself, he was an inspiration for others to play their best. Buddy Miles, probably only 19 here, is playing his heart out like never before or since. Mike, only 25, leads the Flag like the old pro he actually is.
What's going on with the loud rapidly strummed ending chord at the end, when Bloomfield is doing other stuff on the guitar? Was there a rhythm guitarist, or is that the organ, or...did they add stuff to this later in the studio? 2:22
I love the audience response at the end of this, especially the young lady jumping up and down and the chap behind her (wearing a beige/tan jacket) gesticulating wildly with his left hand. Pure joy.
I wonder where all of the people in the audience are now (if they're still alive). Videos like these are so precious.

This is fantastic, and I'm so glad it was finally released by DA Pennebaker a few years ago. The music here is really good and "down to earth" for a crowd which, by all estimates, was about 80 percent bombed on some very powerful "purple acid" making the rounds on that June weekend in 1967.
@Pecka1 No, I guess he wasn`t. I mean why, they weren`t a big deal then ( commercially ) and the performance was not included in the original monterey movie, wasn`t it.
if hes not playing open strings or notes on he first fret that pick under the strings wont affect his playing. i must admit though that is unusual, ive never anyone do that before
This performance with the Electric Flag was MB at his best before the drugs started taking their toll. A reallly inspiring, soulful player with way too short a career.
@bertie0184 - IMO he did his best work with Butterfield. Whatever - in 50 years of listening to rock and blues, I've never heard anyone play with as much energy and excitement and enthusiasm as Michael Bloomfield - he had some kind of amazing force inside of him that was uncontainable. RIP.
Vectortemple i completely agree. Once you listen to The Paul Butterfield Blues Band you it turns you into some kind of jazz blues hipster...I know i cant go back now, and i dont want to!
Why did he leave a spare pick under the strings by the first fret? You think he would have pulled that out of there..How could he even play with that in there? Something is messed up about this.
@cleanandoftenseen I don't think it's a spare pick - my guess is it is there to mute the bottom 3 strings. If he is just playing solos and no open strings it could actually work really well.
I was there at the Monterey gathering. Bloomfield was rockin n a rollin. At his night show he was sportin an afro. They had ultra violet spot lights in them days and when they shined the spot light on him.....his afro glowed like a purple halo!
Was this an incarnation of The Electric Flag? What is the date and location, please?

Everyone was probably blown the fuck away, because he was so much better than all the other bands.
