I used to have the same problem with my computer but a bit different...i could see my desktop for 5 seconds and then my computer was reset X) i format him and was ok, this is caused from the graphic card and some games and programs which change some visual styles or make some settings on the graphic card (like some games)
I'm still on a dell 8200, I got mine in late 2001. Still works fine, upgraded it along the way. Specs: Pentium 4 2.60ghz 1GB of RDRAM PC800 80GB WesternDigital 7200rpm 8mb buffer hd BFG nvidia geforce 6 6200 OC 256mb card Turtlebeach Riveria sound card 19" NEC crt 1024 X 768 at 100hz 32bit Lite-On DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive second NEC CD-RW drive Flobby drive DSL speed using a Ethernet card Yep it still runs, and I play some games online aswell :) :/
The problem is its a Dell, once you fix that everything should be fine.... I HAD an Inspiron 9100 and the screen would just randomly fade to white. That was the least of my problems, I replaced many of the components before giving up on that piece of shit
It's definately the video card ram that has gone bust.
The only solution is to replace the video card.
It happened to myI8200 with the ATI radeom 9000M 64mb. I was so upset because it was a great graphic card. Luckly I found a video card on ebay and I payed £30. The ad didnt say what model it was and to my estonishment after I installed it, it turned out to be a Nvidia Quadro 4 GL 64mb. BOOYA!!
Had an identical problem with my old Inspiron 8100. Replaced old 16mb agp card with refurbished 32mb card and it works just fine now. Just can't run the newer really memory intensive applications on it. Good for basic school work and some vuln testing with wifi.
ya i had the same laptop, happened to me. you need to flash the video card with new BIOS from Nvidia, I downloaded the dell ones thinking it would make it better... but it came up like that. go to Nvidia

Try reseating the video card AFTER you clean the connectors with contact cleaner/WD40 if that doesn't work, get a replacement on ebay.

Try plugging it on a external display.

that look like the hardware problem, there must be wrong with the motherboard or any parts might be loose inside.
