Just perfection! The voices are so impeccable they allow Verdi's genius to come through. I am always surprised no one mentions how exquisitely beautiful Steber was.
Warren's enormous voice flows richly and beautifully. Steber's sizable instrument was full, warm and lovely, buttressed by excellent technique in her prime. Check out Steber's recording of Griffes' "By A Lonely Forest Pathway," circa 1940. Her voice becomes a little unsteady toward the end. But Steber's sound is very likely the most beautiful lyrico-spinto or full-lyric soprano voice I've heard (possible exceptions: Price, te Kanawa and Zeani) ---

Steber deserves additional credit for commissioning Samuel Barbers :Knoxville Summer1915 . Her recording of it ,the first (Columbia LP circa mid 1950s has not been surpassed in spite of several other later recordings by various artists. Her own second version of it( possibly early seventies or so) does not quite come up to the
Primo, can you please date this for us? How young is quite young? Might you also have the Germont aria from the same recording session? I have never heard him better in the role! I have a recording from around '52 I think, but this shows him in better voice.
Warren was a GOD. The voice was so beautifully balanced and so expressive. he is my favorite baritone. They don't make them like this anymore. Steber was one of the greatest singers that this country ever produced.These are two GIANTS paired togeather .
I wasn't too aware of Warren until recently. I am rapidly taking the view that this was one of the great baritones. I read that he died on stage at the Met.
It's great to hear the lovely and versatile Steber in a role few associate with her memory; but the real gem here is to hear Warren in fresh voice, singing so beautifully.
