Honestly, I think Temper Temper and Playing The Game are essentially the same. The songs are different, but the meanings, dances and general atmospheres are just about identical.
Man, when I saw this on Broadway, I was thirteen and I was still scared xD Now that I'm older I appreciate the chilling intensity of the scene but it's still spooky.
It's strange... I saw the show in London when I was really about 6 or 7 and this song scared me so much. But my perception of this kind of theme has really changed and now I see this song for just how awesome it is! I had no idea it was cut from the musical! :)
I consider myself lucky enough to have scene this song done by the original cast. I can't believe they cut this song. I used to dream about being in this show and playing Valentine and singing this song....Oh well....
I was able to see this scene, I saw the show in London when it first came out...sad to hear that it was taken out...it's a great scene. There is a reason I treat my toys with respect...and a reason I don't lose my temper...
Have they even watched the original movie? How about that scene where the kids are lost before Bert sings Chim Chim Cheree. That scared me as a kid, but I sucked it up and became more brave for it. Stupid parents nowadays.
Why do people say Walt was a genius when all he did was take original stories and screw them up?? If he had stuck to what they were then I would appreciate for what Disney films really are. Life is not always nice and you have to accept that, Walt obviously didn't. He wanted everything to be a fantasy world and just made people disappointed for not getting what they wanted. This Mary Poppins is much better than the film because it has the darker interpretation from the books.
You obviously don't understand Walt Disney. Have you ever read a book on his life? He knew very well that he was not true to the story, but he gave those stories more depth and emotion than they originally had. I suggest reading about his battle for control of the story with PL Travers.Anyway, he also tried to branch out from his so called "fantasy world," (ie Bambi, Fantasia) but eventually just got a reputation and couldn't try new things. Sort of like Pixar doing sequels now.
@ReesiePuffs64 You need to do more research. The stories that Walt took were NOTHING what he made them into. I know he wanted to make them more appealing for children as well as adults but it puts me off that he just took everything out. You're the one who doesn't get it so don't accuse me of something that you don't know. And in real life he wasn't a nice man and he supported the nazis. So I suggest you shut up and do research.
What. The. Fuck???? You do realize that I am one semester away from having a motherfucking degree in "Disney History?" I swear. I have read books on Disney history since I was little EVERY DAY of my life. To say I live and breathe Disney is an understatement. I fucking do presentations in public about Walt's life. I have close friends who worked under the man! How the hell you think he was a Nazi supporter is beyond me. Which book did you read (if any)?
And another thing, you obviously know shit about the story writing process. The originals were used as guides, for sure, but for a while he was pretty true to the stories save a few plot points here and there. It was when he was accused of being TOO true to the story in Bambi that he realized his ideas were better than the original stories themselves. Saying that you think the Disney film should be like the book is stupid, but so much of it was true to the story.
And everyone knows about the crap with Travers, but that was later in his career when the movies barely resembled the films (and some films were original ideas). And the only reason the movies are so "happy" is b/c he knew that stuff sold. He has been quoted as saying his movies are "corn," but he demanded quality. He wanted to put the viewer in a happier place away from the real world. He knew life was hard. It was an escape!
@ReesiePuffs64 OMFG!!! I WANT TO PUNCH YOU!!!! HOW FUCKING DARE YOU YELL AT ME FOR EXPRESSING MY OPINION?! YOU ARROGANT LITTLE SLAG!!! YOU STARTED THIS CRAP SO SHUT THE FUCK UP!!! YOU WAIT TILL I GET MY HANDS ON YOU!!!!
And the only reason the films became for children was mostly accident. Walt always wanted to one-up himself and expand. Fantasia didn't do that with a mainstream audience. As he tried other things, he sort of got stuck in a rut in the 50's with his identity. Disney films became synonomous with children/family fare. He was unable to make more mature cartoons. Why do you think he wanted to build CALarts or EPCOT? B/c he was always growing towards more intelligent products.
@ReesiePuffs64 I think you mean SHE got in a rut in the 50's with HER identity... P.L. Travers or Pamela Lyndon Travers was born Helen Lyndon Goff, she used P.L. to hide her gender. Obviously it worked...
DAMN. Now I am legitimately pissed that they took this out. That was amazing! And I know quite a few children who could use this rough awakening. Children who lose their temper lose everything in the end. Love it!
Sigh, lately Disney has been bending over backwards because they're so frightened of what everyone thinks. Who cares if a couple parents thought it was tooo scary for their ickle babies? You wouldn't have lost any money by not taking it out! Ugh...
What I wouldn't do to see THIS live!! While I can understand how it might scare young children, that is why they put up a warning. The compaining parents are the ones who didn't listen. They were expecting the Julie Andrews Mary Poppins. The book's Mary Poppins is much darker and more stern.
While I'm not surprised that "Temper Temper" was cut (had a feeling complaints would make something like this happen), one of the reasons that I enjoyed the song was the fact that it brought more of the book aspect to the show. By removing the song, I feel it's becoming more of the movie and less of the book, when it's supposed to be a fusion of the two. I'm not surprised the switch to "Playing The Game" happened, but I do miss this song.
i haven't seen the play yet, but i have the soundtrack and this is my fav song from it...my friend told me that they replaced it with some milder song...i'm disappointed, this song is teaching the children a lesson...and the books were a little darker than the movie starring Julie Andrews...it would've been nice if they kept the song in and paid homage to the original story.
I remeber seeing this in London when it came out when I was 10 and this scared the crap out of me! But no I love it...but playing the game is a worthy replacement :D
I like it better scarier. They shouldn't have cut this! Kids today are too soft. Although I thought it was quite deliciously spooky and if I had been littke (I was 18 when I saw it, right when it opened) I'd have been scared.
@jhlmb Why?? Kids need to be disciplined and this was a great song! Playing the Game was just a stupid song addd in to tone it down because brats obviously can't learn! You think children can get away with a nice song when they've just been uncouth??
When i saw it in London where the song remained for the full 3 years the british kids were alright with it and then it goes to america and they cant handle it. I love this song in the show and play the game is crap!! I dont suppose the kids were scared it was more like the stupid parents!
I don't understand they dropped Temper Temper.. Mary Poppins just been in Denmark, and theres was a danish version! and with supercalifragilisticexpialidocious its my favorite song! I don't find it scary anyway, and why can't people just tell their kids it just a play? It's such a great sceen :)
It's not the parents fault that this was removed. The reason why this was removed was because the Dutch production didn't like the concept of kids on trail. The parents had nothing to do with it. So basically, all the parent blaming is pointless, incorrect, and a waste of time.
And who knows? They may bring Temper, Temper back someday.
@littleladysonic Uh if you read about it parents DID complain about this and they need to get a grip. The Dutch production may not have liked the concept of kids on trial but the MAIN reason was that the morons of parents demanded to have this song removed because they thought it was unsuitable for children. FFS this is to teach children morals! No wonder kids these days are screwed up.
@littleladysonic I don't know about you but I'm very upset they took this great song out. I mean it's true. Children DO have to learn. Are we just going to hide them from reality all the time?? This scene may be a bit frightening, but this will influence kids for having respect. And the toys don't harm them in any violent way they just threaten them to behave or the worse will happen.
You obviously don't get it. This musical is more based in the book than anything. Disney helped with some of the story and most of the songs but most of the events from the show are lined up in the book. This scene is used to teach the children a lesson. It can't all be fun and games.
And if you want to take stuff out the isn't all nice, then you should take out the second brimstone and treacle. Because according it doesn't seems very Mary poppins like to make her disappear in a bird cage. You need to read the book and then wath te show. Disney likes to sugar coat things quite a lot and think that this is a fair example of it.
I diagree with you. I think it's one way for her to teach the children. If you watch the musical you will see that she teaches them through all different ways. Through games, sayings, and emotions that are portrayed in certain scenes. It so happens that fear is the emotion portrayed in this scene.
The things that are done in "Temper, Temper" are not things Mary Poppins would do. The things that happen in it are something that a villian like Maleficient or Jafar would create not Mary Poppins. My sister didn't like the song when she saw it in London. Also, my friend, who's 26 and will be seeing the show this month, heard about how frightnening "Temper, Temper" was and was glad it was replaced. I didn't mind "Playing the Game" when I saw the show.
@entertainer1987 you obviously never read the book. The books version is VERY different from movie. The musical is a combination of the book and the movie. they explain it all in the 45th annivaersary editon of the DVD when they have a fearurette about the broadway musical
Ugh.. this sucks, I saw the musical but with some stupid song called "Playing the Game." instead of this! So not fair, just because it was " to scary" for kids, this isn't that scary... kids need to suck it up.
@Jojo72897 I saw the show last night in Boston. Sure it would of been great to see Temper Temper, but you have to admit that it was still great to see Playing The Game. They are both amazing songs and it was amazing hearing Playing The Game, and I am grateful to be hearing either during the show.
Anyone who has a recording of 'Precision And Order'? Not the one that Mr. Banks sings, that is; the one that the accountants sing at the bank. The slightly twitchy, jerky, neurotic tune.
Guys, the reason Temper Temper was removed was because the producers of the Dutch version of the show didn't like the concept of the kids being put on trial. After writing it, they wanted to test it in the US tour and somehow it was better for some reason, so they replaced it on Broadway. This was all from an interview George and Anthony appeared in. Personally, both songs are good (I may lean towards "Temper," as I'm used to it and it's a creepier number).
yes that is right because I heard that interview that Stiles and Drewe did. I was rather annoyed that they did not play a clip of the song or play a bit on the piano.
It is also a shame that nobody seems to of listened or read your comments properly, they are all still blaming the parents for complaining about it being too scary.
Do you know where on the internet I can hear the new song?
i saw mary poppins with the original london cast and this was the best part by far, its rediculous that they have taken it out. only an idiot would take a small child to a broadway or westend show. yes i found this part slighly scarey and i'm not a child, but surely thats what makes theatre so exciting!
Fucking parents NEVER listen do they?? (I'm not reffering to all parents of course, just the stupid ones who complained, so don't take that as an offense)
Temper Temper was a brilliant song and they've replaced it with some stupid sweety song when the children are angry, what good will that do to teach them they can't get what they want??
Temper was a moral! It'll keep children in their place to learn from that!
Anyone who blames Disney or Cameron Mackintosh for taking this out, it's not their fault, it's the bloody idiot parents who chose to completely ignore the rules and bring their bratty toddler with them.
It CLEARLY states that no one under 5 is permitted to see the show and they have been given more than one warning.
I, like many other fans am outraged that they cut a fantastic song that outshined the play and made it all sickly.
This was to follow the dark outline of the original story!
I'm shocked that they're taking out Temper Temper! I saw this on Broadway last year and though it turned my blood to ice there in the theater I still can't help but love it. There are plenty of shows that you should NOT take children to. People need to show a little bit of common sense. I wouldn't even take a kid under four to ANY Broadway play, no matter how Disney-fied it is.
wow that was kewl i saw this when they were on tour and the song was diffrent but both songs were sooooooo awesome i cant wait to see another broadway show on tour!
i just saw this on broadway and this part was diffrent. they were in the entrence hall when they yelled at the mom. nd the fighting over valentine was diffrent. nd the sang a diffrent song "Playing the Game." when did they decide 2 change it? other than that its an AWESOME song.
I believe that this song is only removed for the touring production. It is replaced by a song called 'playing the game' which is great in its own right, playing off the themes taken from the song 'being Mrs. Banks'
I just saw the touring production and it was amazing!
Does anybody have the soundtrack of "Playing the Game"? I love the song I dont like the one in the video really :( Playing the game was better in my opinion.
I met him on the Wicked: Behind the Emerald Curtain, and he was the original father in Wicked and soon replaced as the Wizard. And after the tour, we got to see him in this!! He's soo funny and nice. He met us at Stage Door after and remembered us. I love him!! He's Awesome..
Hmm, this can either be marked down as Nightmare Fuel or Epic Song.
Personally, I don't get what's so scary about it; I could understand why a child would be scared by it (the thought of toys being alive scared me pissless way back when), but not those who are above 13. Then again, people don't understand why I'm afraid of ghosts, so I can relate to a degree.
To me, however, this isn't scary to me and is a wonderful song; tis sad it was taken out, but o well.
I just saw this at the cadillac palace in chicago, and they REPLACED IT!!! THEY FREAKIN REPLACED IT with something called PLAYING THE GAME, with the same tune of temper temper but kid friendly!!1 Mary Poppins was just talking to Valentine and the toys did nothing but sway in a friendly fashion. All the others were there, the judge, glamour doll, and the jack in a box....I'M SO MAD!!! I just got back from it. I'm not lying!!!
It's Playing the Game, it's more like a lullaby and Mary sings most of it...and the rest of the toys don't really do anything, including the judge, glamour doll and jack in the box and Valentine.
So what is the scene about? The first thing you see is Jane agruging with Mrs.Banks and Mary Poppins leave. So what is this song about and what are thoese people the pop out? and What is Jane Mad About?
Well, their father got mad at them for making him make a wrong decision that might cost him his job. The song is about losing you temper may lead to consequensces
I've seen this show on broadway three times and this is the best creepiest scene in the show. Other than when Mary sends Mrs. Andrew to hell in a bird cage. But I hear they are toning it down for the tour and for all future productions. Sadface.
i saw this with my friend in the uk and where both adults but it scared the life out of us, i didn't like clowns to start with this just made it more freaky! still good tho!
Temper Temper is still in the Broadway Production as of 4/15/09.
I saw Zach Rand and Kelsey Fowler (playing Michael and Jane) and really thought they were absolutely amazing during this song... they both looked so scared. This song really shows off what amazing actors they are for there age.
its true they have cut this song from the show and replaced it with a new song called " Playing the Game " which is similar to " Temper Temper " but instead Mary Poppins stays with the children but the toys do still come to life....
it is currently in the National tour but they are going to put this new song in to the Broadway show soon....
Ime seeing it on Broadway soon so ime only hoping that the song has not been put in to the production before I see it....
Nope, it's official. The current production in Chicago has already replaced it. Once they get all the kinks out, it will go into the rest of the productions. They also may be changing the house to the touring version which is more like a pop-up book opening up into a house from what I've read.
What was it like??? I keep looking for a picture or a description, but I have had no luck. Please tell me! You can send me a message if it is too long.
Honestly, I think Temper Temper and Playing The Game are essentially the same. The songs are different, but the meanings, dances and general atmospheres are just about identical.

AlliBella101 1 year ago 3
And if you want to take stuff out the isn't all nice, then you should take out the second brimstone and treacle. Because according it doesn't seems very Mary poppins like to make her disappear in a bird cage. You need to read the book and then wath te show. Disney likes to sugar coat things quite a lot and think that this is a fair example of it.
AlliBella101 1 year ago 3
Oh and the song is still in the Broadway show, my parents just saw it in December. But "Playing the game" is in the traveling show.
AlliBella101 2 years ago
I diagree with you. I think it's one way for her to teach the children. If you watch the musical you will see that she teaches them through all different ways. Through games, sayings, and emotions that are portrayed in certain scenes. It so happens that fear is the emotion portrayed in this scene.
AlliBella101 2 years ago
The things that are done in "Temper, Temper" are not things Mary Poppins would do. The things that happen in it are something that a villian like Maleficient or Jafar would create not Mary Poppins. My sister didn't like the song when she saw it in London. Also, my friend, who's 26 and will be seeing the show this month, heard about how frightnening "Temper, Temper" was and was glad it was replaced. I didn't mind "Playing the Game" when I saw the show.
entertainer1987 2 years ago
@entertainer1987
Well I for one am very very annoyed that they cut Temper Temper out because that is what happened in the book.
It may have been frightening but the children weren't being tortured or killed, they were being taught a lesson.
The new song that they've put in makes no sense at all. It just lets children get away with what they want.
You should read the books before seeing this and it seems like you haven't read them that's why you don;t know why they added it in.

@entertainer1987 you obviously never read the book. The books version is VERY different from movie. The musical is a combination of the book and the movie. they explain it all in the 45th annivaersary editon of the DVD when they have a fearurette about the broadway musical
meghan428 1 year ago
@meghan428
I know the book is much darker, but this is the kind of scene a villain would create.
entertainer1987 1 year ago
Ugh.. this sucks, I saw the musical but with some stupid song called "Playing the Game." instead of this! So not fair, just because it was " to scary" for kids, this isn't that scary... kids need to suck it up.

@Jojo72897. Agreed I hate the new song

@Jojo72897 I saw the show last night in Boston. Sure it would of been great to see Temper Temper, but you have to admit that it was still great to see Playing The Game. They are both amazing songs and it was amazing hearing Playing The Game, and I am grateful to be hearing either during the show.

WAT???? This isnt in the show anymore?? They took this out??? Why?? I Loved This Part!! but a little scary, but awesome!! plz anwer me!!

They took it out because a lot of kids who just couldn't suck it up, thought it was scary.

those kids!! they just cant appericate good theater! do you know wat they did in place of this scene?

Anyone who has a recording of 'Precision And Order'? Not the one that Mr. Banks sings, that is; the one that the accountants sing at the bank. The slightly twitchy, jerky, neurotic tune.

Temper Temper is awesome!
KitAlinaTDATDI 2 years ago 2
Guys, the reason Temper Temper was removed was because the producers of the Dutch version of the show didn't like the concept of the kids being put on trial. After writing it, they wanted to test it in the US tour and somehow it was better for some reason, so they replaced it on Broadway. This was all from an interview George and Anthony appeared in. Personally, both songs are good (I may lean towards "Temper," as I'm used to it and it's a creepier number).
TRealSonicHOG 2 years ago 4
yes that is right because I heard that interview that Stiles and Drewe did. I was rather annoyed that they did not play a clip of the song or play a bit on the piano.
It is also a shame that nobody seems to of listened or read your comments properly, they are all still blaming the parents for complaining about it being too scary.
Do you know where on the internet I can hear the new song?
jillcamel98 2 years ago
yea i like playing the game but at least they still had most of the same dance moves, but with Marry Poppins singing too.
cutiebdaygirl 2 years ago
i saw mary poppins with the original london cast and this was the best part by far, its rediculous that they have taken it out. only an idiot would take a small child to a broadway or westend show. yes i found this part slighly scarey and i'm not a child, but surely thats what makes theatre so exciting!
chelseamay08 2 years ago 3
I am SO ANGRY they took this song out!!!!
BRING TEMPER TEMPER BACK!!!
yellowcup87 2 years ago 5
Anyone who blames Disney or Cameron Mackintosh for taking this out, it's not their fault, it's the bloody idiot parents who chose to completely ignore the rules and bring their bratty toddler with them.
It CLEARLY states that no one under 5 is permitted to see the show and they have been given more than one warning.
I, like many other fans am outraged that they cut a fantastic song that outshined the play and made it all sickly.
This was to follow the dark outline of the original story!
candyfairy67 2 years ago 34
I'm shocked that they're taking out Temper Temper! I saw this on Broadway last year and though it turned my blood to ice there in the theater I still can't help but love it. There are plenty of shows that you should NOT take children to. People need to show a little bit of common sense. I wouldn't even take a kid under four to ANY Broadway play, no matter how Disney-fied it is.

I believe that this song is only removed for the touring production. It is replaced by a song called 'playing the game' which is great in its own right, playing off the themes taken from the song 'being Mrs. Banks'
I just saw the touring production and it was amazing!

Replaced?? I saw this May 2nd, and now it's replaced?? With what!??!?!?! :O
musicalchix 2 years ago
Hmm, this can either be marked down as Nightmare Fuel or Epic Song.
Personally, I don't get what's so scary about it; I could understand why a child would be scared by it (the thought of toys being alive scared me pissless way back when), but not those who are above 13. Then again, people don't understand why I'm afraid of ghosts, so I can relate to a degree.
To me, however, this isn't scary to me and is a wonderful song; tis sad it was taken out, but o well.
Solachinx 2 years ago
Hahaa, it's a great song!!
When I saw it, I was in the second row, and the Frankenstein guy was creeping me out cuz he was always glaring at me, lol!! :)

cumbria4me 2 years ago
I just saw this at the cadillac palace in chicago, and they REPLACED IT!!! THEY FREAKIN REPLACED IT with something called PLAYING THE GAME, with the same tune of temper temper but kid friendly!!1 Mary Poppins was just talking to Valentine and the toys did nothing but sway in a friendly fashion. All the others were there, the judge, glamour doll, and the jack in a box....I'M SO MAD!!! I just got back from it. I'm not lying!!!
miep8675 2 years ago
whats the new song like and what does Mary do in the new scene please?
I am itching to see and hear this new song
cumbria4me 2 years ago
It's Playing the Game, it's more like a lullaby and Mary sings most of it...and the rest of the toys don't really do anything, including the judge, glamour doll and jack in the box and Valentine.

The is my absoutle FAVORITE scene when I saw this!

I've seen this show on broadway three times and this is the best creepiest scene in the show. Other than when Mary sends Mrs. Andrew to hell in a bird cage. But I hear they are toning it down for the tour and for all future productions. Sadface.
