  • I own Stevie Wonder's old Jupiter-8! Bought it from a shop that commissioned his old synths when he purchased the new (at the time) PPG 'wave synth'!!

I have 5 videos from a show I played in Winnipeg, 1986, featuring the Jupiter, my MIDI'd Yamaha CP-80, with an Ensonique keyboard off the the side.. Check my videos.. I just got it fixed up 1 month ago & am looking forward to getting it integrated in my new recordings.. Purchased 1983 - $4,200 / by 1993, it was worth $450.00. Today: $6,000+

  • I mean one finger chromatic, obviously

  • why did this guy have a jupiter 8 for 20 years with a flightcase when HE CAN'T PLAY???

what was he doing for the last 20 years?

And yeah, I saw the one note chromatic too. Sheesh, my piano teacher had me doing one-hand chromatics in minor thirds way before I even joined my first band.

  • you should have never sold it man.

  • my thoughts exactly anonymusum

  • what a wonderful imstrument -- imagine this on top of a fender rhodes

  • wow, where can i get that midi retrofit kit ??

  • Did I just see you do a chromatic scale with one finger? That just happened!

  • I only paid $320.00 for this synth at a garage sale. It's fully functional and in near mint condition. Forget ebay, look around people and I'm sure you'll find this beauty at a fraction of the cost that they sell for on ebay.

  • @66612345678

They had one at goodwill for $30 where I live, but that was five years ago when I wasn't interested at the time in playing keyboards....DAMN IT!!!

  • do you still got this bro?

  • This yet to be released "Jupiter 80" is just a Fantom in Jupiter colors. What sucks is that since the Korg Triton there really hasn't been a good solid synthesizer released that can stack up to these bad boys. And Ebay sellers know it...so they're like StubHub--selling for extraaordinary prices. What Roland should do is partner with Arturia, at least develop a controller shell of a classic Jupiter 8 to control the 8V software. Or re-release the Jupiter 8 altogether.

  • @coreystuart If they could find all the parts, some of which I think are no longer being made by companies that went out of business before YouTube was even launched, a remake of the Jupiter 8 would cost about $15,000. If they could actually price it that cheap.

  • THe B-52s used this for many years on the wild planet and WHAMMY tours.

  • The following artist have all used the JP-8: (Part 1/2)

Tangerine Dream, Orbital, Future Sound of London, Moby, Duran Duran, Underworld, Vince Clarke, Überzone, Jean Michel Jarre, Roxy Music, OMD, A Flock Of Seagulls, Depeche Mode, Rush, Meat Beat Manifesto, Banco De Gaia, Josh Wink...

  • @JamesRoneyMusic you got that off of Vintage Synth Explorer.com didn't you

  • The following artist have all used the JP-8: (Part 2/2)

Thomas Dolby, Howard Jones, The Cars, Prince, Gary Wright, Jan Hammer, BT, Adrian Lee, Heaven 17, Kitaro, Elvis Costello, Tears for Fears, Huey Lewis and the News, Journey, Moog Cookbook, Toto, Yes, Devo, Freddy Fresh, George Duke, Greg Phillanganes, Jonathan Cain of Journey, Greg Johnson & Kevin Kendrick of Cameo, Stevie Wonder, Journey, Michael Jackson and Simple Minds to name a few. Not to mention countless soundtracks.

  • jesus fucking christ this is fucking expensive

  • MIDWEST AUDIO!!! They're repairing my Roland.

  • @Saibot216, did you get you JP8 back yet???

  • @JamesRoneyMusic I sent my SH-201 to be repaired. For some reason it wouldn't turn on. They have a massive backlog, so it won't be repaired until some time in December.

  • @Saibot216... I know what that's like. The older analog gear is hard to find shops who still can repair it, especially vintage gear. So when we do find a shop that can, they are always swamped!!

Sorry to hear that after 20 years you let your JP-8 go. Oh well. I'm taking my JP-8 with me for another 25 years.

  • @Saibot216... by the way, the JP-8 with MIDI go anywhere from 6 to 8 grand with case. Ebaying it you often lose your ass on it. I hope you got at least 7 grand for it as that's at least what's it's worth.

  • @JamesRoneyMusic No it's my SH-201, I wish I had a Jupiter-8!

  • you sound like michael showalter

  • @imacomputer101 LOL.

  • i wish it.....

    If everybody makes such videos...

  • you will regret selling this synth mate, best synth ever!

  • Roland theoretically could make new revised jupiter 8's but all the analog components have been depeleted and all other third party component manufacturers are out of production, makes it impossible to remanufacture them and make money from it.

The Jupiter 8 was hand built too, all discrete components, before the use of the CEM IC filter on a chip etc...

  • you are lucky mannn

  • The price of a JP-8 isn't even enough to buy a low grade starter grand piano. It's all relative I guess but I always find the price differences people allow and consider "cheap" or "expensive" fascinating (not in a condescending way mind you)

  • theres jupiter 8 all over zx84-englands hall of fame, looks like a great studio

  • Anyone selling a Jupiter 8?

I'm looking to buy one. Preferably with midi.

  • wow! i actually signed up to you tube to post this comment. I dont own one of these, but im thinking of buying one. I own quite a few good synths, I studied jazz and play saxophone and piano. continue...

  • #2: Go to a recording studio and you find these and other amazing synths there (because they collectively put together and purchase them for there amazing sounds). Google midnight juggernauts, Vince owns one not even used for performance, for pure enjoyment. Tell me they cant play n you can have their

  • wow! i actually signed up to you tube to post this comment. I dont own one of these, but im thinking of buying one. I own quite a few good synths, I studied jazz and play saxophone and piano. I actually play in an electronic dance band, so although this genre of music may not be attributed to the most talented musicians, i believe my yeas of study qualify me as a resonably musician...and player.

  • your voice is so nazaly, great synth...i'm borrowing for a few weeks from my friend it's such a good synth, and i thought i was more of a jp-6 person

  • Not to be off-topic here, but...

Have you guys seen the back of the Fantom-G? It's even thicker than the Jupiter! Seriously.

There's absolutely NO reason for the Fantom being so thick... modern circuitry warrants nothing of that size. It's a monstrosity.

And JohnnyMidnight1, you are truly, truly, ignorant.

You know, also, one thing that Instantkarmaband didn't mention is what year this JP8 was made.. Earlier models have those awful OSCs that go out of tune constantly.

  • I'm gonna reply to your stupid post with a deservedly equally-retarded one...

    lolumad???

  • Bahahaha... That was great...

    Thank you! :)

    And.... whomp whomp whomp!

  • what's so great about the jupiter-8? What can you do with it that you can't do on a Juno-106, jx-8p, or whatever else?

  • The great thing about the Jupiter-8 is that it's a rare object. It's like a Neogeo, a Ps2 is better than a Neogeo, you can buy a second hand Ps3 for $70, a second hand neogeo is like $600

  • It's the discrete circuitry inside the Jupiter 8 that makes it so special. Go and play one and see.

The jx-8p can come very close though, even so a JP 6 still sounds better.

  • I had a jupiter 6 and sold it...not a warm synth.

The jx-8p is warmer and phatter to my ears.

  • I'm jealous of whoever won this auction! The greatest synth of the 20th century!

  • Funny, real musicians mostly cannot afford synths like this, but people who cannot play own them.

  • @anonymusum if u work maybe u can afford one, you are jealous thats all.

You can find Jupiter for 200$ .

  • @phobosazazel81

Very funny - I have one - since the 80s - still looks like new...

  • @anonymusum Me too, with its MD-8, 14-bit... I was lucky to get it quite cheap from a friend. Ultra reliable and sounds like gold. Too bad it seems Roland will never re-release this beast, because it's d-i-s-c-r-e-t-e (and that it's why it sounds so good) - to make a true replica it would cost them a fortune nowadays.

  • @anonymusum Real musicians do not need a synth like this. They can make music with anything. Do a search on Cikia Music, is a woman who has loads of synths, I mean 4 Nord Leads! are an small part of her collection, and she does not have a single song made after almost 20 years.

  • @anonymusum Not everything that has the 'shape' of a keyboard attached to was meant for musicians, (or real musicians as you stupidly claim, that's like saying it's only for people who are old fashioned, melody playing people that's afraid of techology). There are different kinds of use for synths. For musicians, synths are one thing, for others they are textures, frequencies and 'keys' are mearly 'controllers' which make up 1 tiny part of their instrument called 'their studio'

  • @anonymusum its because real musicians play all day , so they dont have time for looking aroubd for one of this at a cheap price

  • @anonymusum

damn so true, and on a side rant i think musicians are getting replaced by computers, its all pissing me off.

  • @anonymusum

YOu are corre3ct I am one of them that cannot play I have 3 syns and 2 racks!

  • @anonymusum : for some reason they think expensive synths will write the song for you or something. Maybe with a wimpy Fantom, but the mighty analogs demand that you play them.

  • @anonymusum hahaha too true.

  • @anonymusum I hear you there on that one thats for sure!

  • @anonymusum Making money doesn't go with musical skill, unfortunately. Compare Bieber with Hiromi, and you'll see what I mean. That also goes that a great mechanic won't generally own a Testarossa, but a Juseppe with deep pockets who has no appreciation for the car design is more likely to own one.

  • Mine was in really good condition, I was offered $8300, sold it and now regret it. The 8v sounds good but its not a replacement for the actual synth.

  • It has an Encore kit! :)

  • That is the most coolest thing ever!!

    Listen to the sounds!

    Patchbook is just amazing...

Must have cost a smaller fortune when brand new....

  • Ive had two of them and they are great synths, but not worth the stupid money they go for on ebay. I think the value of them is the rarity not so much the sound, which can be pretty closely obtained on other synths nowadays, still a great warm filter though.

  • See, it's not what your synth can do for you, it's what you can do with your synth.

  • you said it Kennedy!

  • Would yoo sell me one then? I love 'em

  • How much would you like it for, the price that people are selling them at is £3995 which is USD 6555. So I'll be looking along those lines.

  • Well, the prices differ ALOT. Craigslist is a different world compared to ebay. I thought that you might wanted to part with one for USD 2000-2500.

  • I guess the prices do vary quite a lot but I'm not willing to ship this beast all the way from the UK. Sorry but there is probably someone in my country who would buy it for more. I wasn't planning on selling it just yet anyway

  • Wouldn't be a problem with the shipping. I could just pick it up in the UK, I tour and have friends in London. Please let me know if you change your mind. Kind regards

  • wowowowowowowowow

  • Are these more reliable than the obx/obxa's?

  • Got one here that imma sell, mint condition, not overpriced.

    Hit me up !

  • has it been sold?

  • What gets me is that Roland isn't smart enough to start making a new revised version of the Jupiter 8, they could make a killing!!! Stupid ROLAND!!!

  • People who own these beasts would go insane at the thought of their prized synth losing value overnight!!!

  • I'd buy one. They could even bring out budget versions with themes eg 80s, house, d&b etc

  • @BlueIzzzs

You can get the Arturia Jupiter 8V vst software from ebay for about 86 quid.

I have tried this software and it is very good and a lot cheaper than the 5-7,000 quid asked for the hardware synth.

These synths are really only for synth museum/collectors now as they cost to much to be viable unless you have loads of cash or are obsessed with owning one ;)

  • @BlueIzzzs

Guess that with todays electronics (very different with the way it was back then) it would make no sense doing that ... just try qa Korg Triton or Yamaha Motif -which are quite recent- and you'll see how it sounds weak compared with the "old" synthesizers (of the 1970s/1980s) ...I know not much about all that and am no musician, but my big brother have been an amateur musician and keyboardist in his band for over 25 years...

  • @BlueIzzzs you are so RIGHT.

  • @BlueIzzzs

    Yes indeed they would!

Have it with digitally controlled oscillators for stability,

but 100% voltage controlled signal path,

Create it with the same look, feel and sound.............

People would be lining up to get a hold of one, I know I would!

  • @richardbates1 digitally controlled oscillators, why? i love the movement and thickness gained from a vco. Analogue modelling isnt even close!

  • @screwloose07 Having digitally controlled oscillators is not the same as Analog modeling. It is still pure analog. The Roland Jupiter 6 is digitally controlled oscillators but still pure analog.

Don't confuse DCO's as Analog modeling.

  • @BlueIzzzs THey justt did The Jupiter 80

  • @BlueIzzzs Obviously all the engineers that worked on the Jupiter 8 died while working on it. The ones that survived, killed themselves because they knew they would never make something as awesome.

  • @BlueIzzzs Surprise! Jupiter 80. Totally digital. Still unaffordable.

  • OMG!!! I need to buy it!!! The best sounds ever!! Reminds me always Duran Duran.

  • This is the greatest synth ever! I had one of the first available in the UK. I almost bought a CS80 until the shop got one of these in and it simply blew the Yamaha away. It sounded better, looked better, had memories, weighed less, was a lot smaller and had more functions like the arpeggiater, it had it all. Simply awesome! The Ferrari of keyboards!

  • This thing is like the SH201 of the 80's! I LOVE this synthesizer!!!

  • lol. you could offer me 20 SH201's, and I would take 1 of these babies, everytime :p

  • i just put mine up on ebay i've had it for about 15 years .can i ask how much you sold yours for ?

  • One thing about the Jupiter you gotta watch... the heatsink on the back on the unit on the right-hand side, just by the power switch... it gets extremely hot... too hot to touch for more than few seconds. Other than that, one of the best sounding synths ever made. I would love to own another one. I have the virtual JP-8 plug in by Arturia... its actually not bad... they've done a good job modeling the filter... but it aint the real thing!...

  • holy shit what a beast

  • Yeah Great Unit!

I have a Jupiter 8 at my Recording Studio and it is absolutely Great! Best Synthi I personally know!

  • yeah me to.. one day im going to get the cash... curious,, how much did it sell ? i have a juno 60 and a DX7IIFD and i want the jp..

  • I just came.

  • Listen to the synth bass starting at 4:30. There just is no way to get as punchy bass as this ITB.

  • i love this synth...i cant choose between the jupiter 8 or the prophet 5.....HELPPP

  • You should get the prophet five... The Unicorns(band) had a prophet 5... and a jupiter 6... they were both pretty amazing....

  • prophet 5 is great but remember 5 voice only!!!

    jupiter is the king :)

  • I had one of these... and sold it in 1986. What *was* I thinking? Oh well! How much you want for it?

  • Some go for like 8,000 dollars now. Thats around the price for good condition ;)

  • I want I want I want I want I want I want

  • Ja super! Das schafft kein anderer Sythie! LOL! Oh Mann, echt zum heulen!

  • How much was this piece sold for??

I would give up all synths (nordleads, JX8P, Juno 106) for this piece..

    ABSOLUTELY SICK STUFF..

  • what a classic piece of equipment

  • Beautiful

  • Wish I could snag one of these.

  • japanese analogs (roland/korg) were my favorite, even if american analog (bob moog) started it all (but only monophonic, which sucked)...sequential circuits is good too, but korg/roland, especially roland...THE BEST..when it comes to analog...jupiter 8, juno 60, superjupiter (mks80)...i love ROLAND

  • You don't know what you are saying.

  • That thing is candy :)

  • oh my god..dont sell it dude;-)

  • Stuff ePay!

  • I'm selling a Jupiter 8 if anyones interested.

  • How much? Is it in good condition?

  • i saw the demo, roland jupiter is fat analog sound.somoebody say yamaha dx7? funny.. dx7 was verry populair, but for me it suck!!!

i try all analog synths from that time, i think roland, korg and moog was the best

i try yamaha dx7 to.. how hard i program the sounds still was cold..

    fm synthese, not my fav

  • This guy has upgraded and want to let someone learn a real synth respect! How he sell such a lovely machine the man has a heart.

  • Wow musicians want to give us their instruments :)

  • prefer the Korg Prophet 5...(personnaly...)

  • Korg does not make the prophet 5...

  • Sequential Circuits, you mean in terms of the manufacturer.

  • That would be a funny change in history if Korg pioneered the Prophet

  • The JP-8 easily blows the DX7 away. As for the JP-6, I've used both the JP-8 and JP-6. The JP-6 is not as thick sounding or lush as the JP-8 (twice as deadly with reverb).

  • The DX-7 is a completely different type of synthesizer - you are comparing apples to oranges.

  • I agree to an extent. On my music projects, I've designed numerous patches on both the Jupiter 8 and DX7. Yes, they're very different. However, in my opinion, the Jupiter 8 is a far richer sounding board with a much wider range of sound possibilities. There's no question that the two boards occupy quite different ends of the sonic spectrum. Hence, we keep both of them around. If I had to choose though, I'd definitely keep the JP8.

  • You kind of sound like Christian Slater ;)

  • How would this compare to the Jupiter 6?

  • I thought the Jupiter 6 was a 6 voice version of the Jupiter 8. As far as i know it's the same keyboard with 2 voices less. I might be wrong though :)

  • No. The Jupiter-6 uses CEMs and the Jupiter-8 uses the Roland chips. I think the Jupiter-4 is closer to the Jupiter-8 than the Jupiter-6 in my opinion. The Jupiter-6 sounds so thin too, which is lame. In my opinion, the only thing the Jupiter-6 has going for it is its versatility.

  • the king of synth in 80 , simply amazing

  • man i was going to buy one change my mind after seeing this man lets here some more sounds i can do that with my jp 8080 and mini moog dont get me wrong you better try and show a lot more as far as sound wise

  • I got mine JP8 in 1998 for 8000 FIM (back then). It was definitely worth of every penny (well, cent, nowadays..) Excellent condition (studio use only!) Amazing synthesizer.Absolutely Amazing! Glad to see that JMJ used it in his Oxygene 30th anniversary concerts ;) ! And on atleast 3 studio albums too =) It´s a gem :D !! Will never be apart from it <3 ^^ ! J/\/\J Finland

  • Got my JP-8 for $300 back in 1988. Guy was selling to buy a DX7! Funny how times (and equipment) change. His argument was the Jupiter was "outdated" and therefore "useless" "plus the DX7 is digital it never goes out of tune" etc. I almost couldn't contain my laughter so I simply agreed "yeah you're better off getting rid of it", handed him the cash & was done. Still have it after 20 years.

  • haha what a stupid person. Selling a Jupiter 8 to buy a digital synth. In other words, SELLING THE BIGGEST SYNTH OF THE 80'S to buy a digital synth.. haha!

  • I don't see anything wrong with the DX7. However, selling the Jupiter 8 for one? The guy's insane. I could only dream of owning one...

  • The DX7 was a great synth, but it was stupid sell the Jupiter8 for a DX7.

  • dx-7 was krap

  • sure is funny how times change. my dad once sold his ms-20 and sequencer to buy a dx7, he never sold any instrument since then.

  • Amazing to get such a cheap sound out of such an expensive keyboard.

  • The synth of Axel F of Beverly hills cop

  • one day all ebay demos/auctions will be done this way....top marks for effort.quality machine. keep it your regret it my friend.

  • Yes, there will be many more eBay sellers posting demo videos, but are we sure we want to see some of them/ "Hi. I'm Doris and this is the vaccuum cleaner I am selling. Oh, don't mind the 57 cats you see in the background. They share my apartment with me...."

  • this is true but who wants to see a video of a vac? as any 1 we half a brain knows what a vac does, where as a synth such as the jp8 with so much happening and the price someone will be paying for it needs to have a full run down.and anyway who wants to by a vac on ebay you can pick one up for £20 in argos..and if any one cant afford a full price vac at around 20quid there leading a sheltered life.and its a pity they dont sell brains on ebay.cos no doubt youd be bidding for 1..case closed

  • Case is never closed in an on-line discussion. Look, this eBay seller has already sold it. YouTube and eBay have both requested that he remove this video from the internet. Yes, vaccuum cleaners cannot make very good music, but the JP8 can't clean floors, thanks for the comparison... In the big picture: a fully acoustic, 88-key Steinway piano is much better than any electronic keyboard. You want electric? Try a Fender-Rhodes or a Hammond B-3...now that is being plugged-in!!

  • what?

  • why?

  • cold, sterile sounds, terrible interface (no knobs) and absolutely nitemarish programming method.

  • Selling it after 20-years, you must know that there's nothing better. You'll surely regret it. I regreted it when I sold my first JP8. The JP8, Prophet-5 and Prophet-600 are the last synths I'll ever sell.

  • I had a Jupiter-8 back in 1996 with this Encore MIDI Kit and I sold it 2 years later, I deeply regret today! Alicia Keys got one too in her new video "No one". I guess this one is THE synth and will always be THE synth..

  • why did you sell, I guess you needed the money huh??? that can be the only reason.

  • you talk like christian slater

  • good demo but kinda hard to dance to... I hope you do well with sale of this great keyboard!

  • Lmao, thats because theres no drum machine. :)

  • I have a Jupiter 8 synth for sale if anyone is interested. email me for more info.

  • how much you want?

  • Its on Ebay now. do a search on: Roland Jupiter 8 -it will pop up. Lemme know.

    Claude 314-420-0932

  • the roland jupiter 8 is the greatest synthesizer ever made!!!!!!!!

  • man what a sweet piece of equipment

  • damn!!! i wish i could afford that thats like the fantom X of the early 80s lol. idk why youd wanna give up something like that though.

  • i bet your gonna miss her , shes a beast, i wouldnt ever give up my Jupiter 8

  • beautiful jupiter

  • Great vid, pity I couldn't afford to bid!
