Amusing that Petula Clark completely beguiled all of her famous American duet partners--Dean Martin, Andy Williams and Bobby Darin (see the other you tube videos). I guess if she had not been taken, should could have had her pick!

I wonder what she said to him...I remember when I first saw her on tv, she sang Down Town. I had heard the song on the radio but this was my first time seeing her...she walked out and I thought she's so tiny, maybe 5 feet 2 inches. But wow this small girl has such a strong and beautiful voice !
Soory to burst your bubble there, maleficentdiva, but it's a well-documented fact that Dean drank iced tea or cola when taping as booze messed up his dancing/siinging and acting, etc. All you have to do is look at the DUI's in any drunk tank to see that!
The whole drinking shtick was just that, an act. It played well with audiences tho! Dean rarely drank in private either. Felt it wasn't dignified. A lesson some of the current crop of 'actors' could learn from.
@ShastaPacificRoad thats the truth too...he drank apple juice too..it was all an act..Dean was too professional and thought too much of his fans to mess up a concert or show..he took that seriously.
I remember when I first saw Pet Clark on tv singing Downtown. She was this tiny girl with a great voice, just so awesome and of course quite beautiful.
Both her and Dean are just so relaxed and natural on stage, real professionals.
@whiskeyify I finally figure out what the name of the song was. Bits and pieces put enough together that I found it. It is "Those Where The Days" by Mary Hopkin. Just in case you were courious.
@whiskeyify I have a question. Maybe you might know. Their is a song that maybe Petula or Lulu sang. I can't find the title in my mind. A part of the lyrics are as such "Is that lonely woman in the mirror really me?" First I was sure it was Petula, then I was sure it was Lulu. Drawing a blank on Amazon too. Do you maybe know?
@whiskeyify Thanks for the reply. That helps me rule out Petula. My first hunch that it is Lulu is most likely correct after all. I'll just have to keep digging. Thanks again.
@dgolub1: What a lovely thing to say dg. You now have many to choose from though don't you? A soon to be 78 year old woman still touring appreciates your sentiments however. Keep listening.
OMG, this is great upload! Deana and Pet had such unique sounds and styles and yet as we can see here, the chemistry is magical. Together the power of entertainment is just magnified. Agree with onebaud. He lists my favourite men too! Sigh ...
I feel so sorry for youngsters today. I can't imagine growing up without Dean Martin, John Wayne, William Holden, Fred Astaire, James Stewart and so many more I cannot list them. Kids today have so little to replace them.
I don't know about that. All those people you mentioned are great but if they lived to today and had paparazzi spy on them 24/7 and had to deal with the internet where word spreads faster than you can say 'hold on a sec'... maybe our picture of them would be very different. I don't think today's artist are so much worse, we just know more about their flaws.
@onebaud Very well put. If it wasn't for the news and History Channel I'd of shucked my TV a long time ago. There is a total vacumn in talent these days. We sure were lucky to live in the 60's.
@onebaud you're wrong. We still have them, it's just that they are not alive. But they will always be available and even more nowadays with the technology we have. It's just that some youngsters us are unable to appreciate any of their art. I am 21 and I love Dean Martin.

@onebaud If you feel sorry for youngsters today you need to take off your horse blinders. I feel sorry for the kids as they get so much baby boomer music shoved down their throats.
@onebaud I was three years old when he died. I'd really love to be at least by 30 years older then I am. Can't understand how is that possible that even my mom and dad don't now him and have never heard of him., nor my brother and my friends. I know he was American/Italian and I am Czech but still it's strange for me to love this fella and be all alone in it.
lee el comentario en tu canal,y no digas idioteses ,PETULA es una señora con mayuscula,y DEAN,solo un compañero de trabajo con el cual tenia gran afinidad...NADA MAS.
Dean Martin was one of the absolute best male preformers/singers/vocalists and entertainers ever. To be able to be looking directly into Petula Clarks eyes and enjoy her beauty and talent so close had to be a great thrill for him. She's just a wonderful talented singer and I'm still jealous of him being able to sing with her and hold her in his arms. Just love this preformance!
@mltw1371 Dean did a lot more than look in her eyes and hold her in his arms... Several times, they were seen alone together in Dean's dressing room at NBC; and although nothing explicit was ever seen - after all Dean Martin was pure "class" - it was well known among the show staff that they had a "thing" going on.
Quality never goes out of style. They are great together but Petula is oh so, so, so adorable. So pretty and the best voice coming out of England since the Beatles Paul McCarthy ! Love to here Paul & Petula.
Now, this is entertainment! What we have today can't compare, it just can't. You don't hear voices like this anymore, nor the harmonies. It just makes you smile...
I totally agree. My "first" favorite song was Pet's "Downtown" (Dad won't let me forget - was only 2 y/o then!), and I find that 43 years later, my favorite music is still from my childhood years. And, it also makes me smile :-)
darrowby1972 - yeah, Dean is great!! - but a lot of that drunk stuff (I'm not saying he didn't drink!,- wasn't the Pope, but...) - was often a 'put-on'! - was a part of his stage 'persona' - he would often act drunk when he wasn't! - Cheers to Dean & Petula!!
Joey Bishop once commented that the whole drunk thing was a put on. Most the time he was drinking apple juice on stage. I believe the exact quote was "Hell, Frank spilled more than Dean drank!"
It won't happen again, folks. Pet had been on the stage since age 10 and Dino had a natural talent that he honed for years with the best of pruning and encouragement. This is what makes them seem so natural and spontaneous together: a multitude of experiences, intellectual curiosity, long hours of hard work, hard knocks and years of experience. You can't expect that from Britney Spears...
I think that Dean was extremely smart and wise to choose to go with Jerry. Love had nothing to do with it. As he said at the end of their partnership, "......you were only a dollar sign to me......"
Sad but true cause Jerry deep in his heart knew it was reality.
Proper music, proper singing, proper celebrities and proper tv! What do we have today - trash music, idiots and drunks who are simply famous for being famous (Jade Goody springs to mind and far to much reality rubbish. Bring back variety shows, proper singers and people who really can claim the title of "celebrity" or "star" as I prefer. Im 29 and so cant really remember what it was like to watch a good saturday nights tv!
couldn´t agree more..i mean how can it be that there were great shows, great entertainers& such great singers back in these days and today we have like..nothin? i think this is almost ridiculous and i deeply miss the old days...thank god there´s youtube xD
Like this show, I was watching a re-run on TV of a two hour special of Nancy and Frank Sinatra. They just don't make TV like that anymore.... much to our loss....
Petula Clark is delightful in this video. They made such great singing partners, it is surprising that they never recorded together, or did they? I also agree with the comments here that these types of shows are sorely missed today. I too am sick and tired of all the garbage so-called reality shows.
was just reading th Post. was my thoughts exactly, i been watching these bits and pieces from all the variety shows from the past. you are right i was just thinking how much i miss these, was just saying "god TV sucks anymore" bring back the Variety show
Well, everyone seems to agree that today's music sucks...I loved Dean and Petula was so beautiful and great...I just feel sad that people today don't enjoy performers like this.
Now that's entertainment. To bad our collective taste for class and real talent has so degraded that we'll buy anything they choose to shovel at us today.
2old2rocck, this video is really enjoyable, thanks for sharing. You're right, they don't make them like that anymore, Petula's voice is so refreshing, she could be every singer's favorite partner. Dean Martin's act and voice gets charmingly harmonious dueting with her.
lots of jokes on TV Now a days. But i grew up when i could see all the variety shows ont v. From Ed Sullivan on. sure made a sunday night before school week. I miss all this Kind of TV also. dump all the riki lake type garbage. We know we have Butt holes in the world, seen them on news in papers. who really gives a crap about those losers on those shows, bring back entertainment, i have enough of the garbage.

look at all the sensitive people giving you a thumbs down for this comment... wow, i mean does anyone actually think Dean DIDN'T poke her??? whats next a thumbs down for saying the sky is blue?
I recall Dean calling Vicki Carr "the best girl singer in the business." No, I don't think Dean and Pet Clark did any hanky-panky, being amorous and sexy was part of his stage persona.
Dean and Petula had great spontaneous chemistry. They never had a love relationship and weren't in each other's lives aside from his T.V. shows. What is interesting here is the high level of musicianship, the ability of both artists to create a mood, and their split-second timing. A thought: Imagine Britney trying to cope with Dean Martin, not to mention recording live with a live orchestra.
Amusing that Petula Clark completely beguiled all of her famous American duet partners--Dean Martin, Andy Williams and Bobby Darin (see the other you tube videos). I guess if she had not been taken, should could have had her pick!

I also agree with the comments here that these types of shows are sorely missed today. I too am sick and tired of all the garbage so-called reality shows.

Well, everyone seems to agree that today's music sucks...I loved Dean and Petula was so beautiful and great...I just feel sad that people today don't enjoy performers like this.

I recently got all of the episodes of the Dean Martin show and the collabs. with Petula Clark are some of the best singing numbers.

Dean Martin's act and voice gets charmingly harmonious dueting with her.

two great people, two amazing voices, perfect combination

I recall Dean calling Vicki Carr "the best girl singer in the business." No, I don't think Dean and Pet Clark did any hanky-panky, being amorous and sexy was part of his stage persona.

My guess is that there was attraction between them. It sure looks like it atleast. But more important, it´s a great performance from both of them.

my take--Pet was avoiding eye contact to keep her concentration on doing a professional job.

Dean was a natural and could fit in any performance without notice, and pull it off - I think thats what made him so special.

Dean and Petula had great spontaneous chemistry. They never had a love relationship and weren't in each other's lives aside from his T.V. shows. What is interesting here is the high level of musicianship, the ability of both artists to create a mood, and their split-second timing. A thought: Imagine Britney trying to cope with Dean Martin, not to mention recording live with a live orchestra.
waynebrasler 4 years ago 3
Part of Dean's charm is he could make anyone look and sound good--perhaps even Britney.
