It's a metaphor. Saying lay me out with the wind, your mind can wonder and take you to places you're not fond of. Your mind can wonder and take you the place where that person you don't want to think about is. Therefore the balloon represents thought. That's my interpretation.
i think its that now he has someone, something that makes him happy and keeps him company, vice versa, just for someone else to take it away too soon and he didn't see thing to do anything about it
This was probably really awkward during the making of the video because it probably looked like a guy taking the girl out for a walk like a dog... But I love this song :)
I feel number one, that this was purposefully left to be interpreted several different ways.Personally, I feel he was searching and found only a piece of someone he thought was amazing, she in turn was hurting and vulnerable. He chased it, kept it, held it. Fell in love with only a part of a whole. The vulnerable part of another person. His vision of perfection however was shattered by one careless stone ( a word, a look etc) from someone - even when he found out that she was not what he thought
A loaded gun is much like a heart full of love. A gun's purpose is to shoot. A heart's purpose is to love. If it's loaded and he isn't using it, what can she do but give it away to someone else?
Remember playing this song on the piano at Guitar Center @ ontario mills mall pregnant, singing it as well, and a crowd all around me...memories im really going to start picking up piano again.

@NikkieFreakshow It's symbolic. As are many things in this video: It's no coinsidence that we find her near the dumpster; she was taken for granted. Her value and self worth was destroyed. The severed head is a metaphor for the tramatic state which he placed her in. The fact she takes the form of a balloon futher examplifies the fact she is fragile. At first she pushes (or rather floates) away from him, but soonly returns. She still loves him even after what he did.

@rbccstmrtn I believe there is a reference between the 7 deadly sins in addition to the two people in the relationship, so 7 deadly sins + person 1 + person 2= 9 crimes. Just what I've heard.
thanks true blood... for helping me support an artist i haven't heard of, or would of even gotten close to searching for.. without your help. itunes tiem.
this song remind me of my best friend .... he got murderd n get stap in a heart beep this August. :( we usally play call of duty all the time and now i cant replace him cause no one else is not like him. he ownlly had 11 years of life :(... Meet him on january 6 2010. I always thing about him and it seems in just not fair cause im still alive n hes not. So im thinking of murding myself to see him again in hevan :(
@Icedcoolcamron dont kill your self life is a car ride u cant stop u may hit a few bumbs even if u get a flat tire u have to keep going dont kill yourself god made a plan for you and he wants you to come to heaven when he wants u to
@Icedcoolcamron Hunny, My best friend died a while back... i tried to overdose... i took 17 vikoden and 35 tylonal and lived... its a miracle im still alive but at the time i was angry that i lived... but just know that suscide is never the right option out. its been a year since i tried to kill myself and i'm very happy... if everyone who had a loved one die killed themselves the world would be goen. It'd just b a chain reaction... you've got family and friends that care deeply about you.
This is such an incredible song... why.... did ....they do THIS to it? This is one of the worst ideas for a video ever... at least in the way it was conceptualized. Wow. I'm going to play it again, and close my eyes....
@kaiserman9 That stupid video ALMOST ruins the song. It's a sophomorish of the great painter Rene Magritte's surrealism. Thus it offends two artists (Damien and Rene) at the same time.
@Ygdrasel I've been a visual artist for forty years my friend, studying it seriously all those years and viewing it carefully in the great museums of this country. I know "sophomorish" work when I see it. How much do you know about Surrealism, and specifically Magritte?
@Zeppolino100 (continuing response to Ygdrasel) The video is TOO easy to interpret, part of what led to my first comment. It didn't matter whether Damien did or did not have anything to do with the video, as either way it falls way short of the depth of artistry in his music. Liking that video is akin to believing that fast food is dellicious gourmet fare.
The video is too easy to interpret...for who? You? Well, here's a news flash: The entire point of art is that everybody can interpret it differently. Just because you personally found an easy interpretation doesn't mean it's shit. Just like just because you personally consider his music to have artistic depth, doesn't mean it's good.
@Ygdrasel There IS no 'entire' point of art. Many books and discussions, etc., are devoted to the multitude of POINTS in it. I don't claim to have THE last word on it. I gave my opinions and it was you who jumped on my back. My negative response to the video is almost totally due to its visual STYLE. I'll be the first to admit that the video maker may have intended more content than I saw. The # of learned critics with similar views is what ultimately establishes quality in the arts.
Argumentum ad populum. Quality isn't even legitimately possible to establish because every individual will differ. As to the idea that Magritte was one of the first to use disembodied fragments, so this video must be trying to copy him...Have you ever seen The Simpsons? Everything's been done, in every medium. Coincidental copies abound. Scooby was a canine sidekick to Shaggy - but Snoopy was the same to Charlie Brown two decades earlier. Did one try to copy the other? Doubtful.
@Ygdrasel When the discussion devolves to the point that you are using cartoons to advance your ideas, there is no point in continuing. You are welcomed to your beliefs, I to mine. I stand with those that believe quality exists and that it can be established through careful pereception and learned analysis. You don't believe in critics, you think all those that try to be artists get the benefit of the doubt and that originality isn't necessary. This ends the conversation. Best to you.
@Zeppolino100 Funny. You never hear about great critics. Only great artists. Now why is that? Because critics don't have the talent to create the art they are criticizing. Critics are fucking assholes who can't do that which they love themselves. Most critics are envious pricks who will NEVER create something as original as the art being discussed and will therefore never be REMEMBERED. So please, STFU!!!!
@RyanKaufman Oh wow. ONE movie critic. Give me the name of a famous art critic, please. Like I said, you can think of five artists off the top of your head and Siskel and Ebert is all anyone can come up with? Movie critics! LAME LAME LAME
@vintonbonner Movies take art. If you don't agree, perhaps you need to look in the mirror. No one remembers art critics because only a small portion of EVERYWHERE favors art. And normally the people who do are pretentious, so they have few friends that don't favor art to possibly be converted. Ebert and Siskel will be remembered because they reviewed one of the most popular forms of entertainment in America at least. That's all.
@RyanKaufman Very well said! Kudos to you for that! I agree that they are two critics etched in pop culture history, there's no argument about that. My only point was that I can't think of any "art" critics but I can immediately think of Picasso, Van Gogh, Alex Grey, Dali, Boris Vallejo. Poets, musicians, actors, filmmakers. I can think of so many different talented people from separate genres but I still can't think of any famous critics besides a movie critic.
@vintonbonner I honestly can't remember any time I've heard an art critics... review I suppose of an art piece. I honestly cannot say I've ever heard anyone judge art. I've been to art museums, and I'm always looking around for cheap pieces that can go in various rooms of my home, never heard a single comment on anything I've seen though. Aside from the "This is nice" etc. Sad really, there should be a TV show about it. Maybe then art can branch out a little more.
@vintonbonner Dude! Without critics shit like Twilight would have won academy awards, even though some people don't agree with critics they are sometimes right about majority of the films, bu then again not all critics agree the same on everything, thats why we have our OWN opinions
@ThatGuyGus I agree. Our opinions mean more than some douche bag that no one cares about enough to hear their opinion. Best thing is to look at it for yourself, no matter what genre.
@vintonbonner So by your faulty logic, only someone who can actually create art can understand and appreciate it? So someone can't analyze and deconstruct something like Michelangelo's statue of David, for example, unless he or she can pick up a chisel and create it himself?
@lexahb Faulty logic? I wasn't talking about someone who "appreciates" art. Criticizing and appreciating are two totally different things, but I guess that's just YOUR faulty logic, huh? And you're damn right, unless you have created something like that yourself, you can't rightfully criticize it. That's MY opinion. You've made my point. Anyone can appreciate art, but who has the right to constructively or non-constructively criticize? A fellow artist of course. A peer who truly knows the craft.
@vintonbonner Here: Lawrence Alloway Guillaume Apollinaire Zacharie Astruc Albert Aurier Charles Baudelaire Michael Baxandall Sister Wendy Beckett Clive Bell Bernard Berenson John Berger John Canaday Champfleury Kenneth Clark T.J. Clark Robert Coates Clarence Cook Douglas Cooper Royal Cortissoz Arthur Danto Denis Diderot
@lexahb Very good. Although I do recognize quite a few names, I can't say I'm sure what kind of art or genre they critique. But I am intrigued. I can see you got it off of an alphabetical list, so these names aren't from the top of your head. But I would still like to know what they all critiqued. Very fascinating though, lex.
Louis Leroy Lucy Lippard Giovanni Lista Camille Mauclair Octave Mirbeau Robert C. Morgan Linda Nochlin Frank O'Hara Saul Ostrow Griselda Pollock Arlene Raven Herbert Read Pierre Restany John Rewald Rainer Maria Rilke Barbara Rose Harold Rosenberg Robert Rosenblum John Ruskin
Oh, here are some more: John Russell Frank Rutter André Salmon Jerry Saltz Irving Sandler Meyer Schapiro Peter Schjeldahl Brian Sewell Roberta Smith Rafael Squirru Leo Stein Leo Steinberg Michel Tapié Théophile Thoré-Bürger Tristan Tzara Kirk Varnedoe Louis Vauxcelles Karen Wilkin Émile Zola
@vintonbonner There are lousy critics and there are brilliant critics, just like in everything else. It's also absolutely false that you never hear about great critics. I can name several in different genres, but you probably wouldn't know who they are.
@vintonbonner Wow. Easy there. No need to get so agitated. I love how people like to attack each other in youtube comments. Here are some famous art critics:
All apologies for getting pissy there. I removed the comment myself because I was a little harsh. Like I said, I DO recognize a lot of those names. Are they all critics of a specific genre? Which ones critique what. As I said, that's pretty intriguing. I still have to say though, most artists names are more recognized than the names listed. Although to me some are known, they are just not well known. Thanks for the research and sharing your findings, lex!
@vintonbonner John Elderfield James Elkins Félix Fénéon Hal Foster Peter Frank Michael Fried B. H. Friedman Roger Fry Théophile Gautier Gustave Geffroy Clement Greenberg Dave Hickey Robert Hughes Edouard Jaguer Michael Kimmelman Hilton Kramer Rosalind Krauss Donald Kuspit Julien Leclercq
@Ygdrasel The reason I brought up Magritte is because he was one of the first to used disembodied fragments of human forms in his work. The fact that you don't care about him, and that you prefer Dali is immaterial, because the maker of this video DOES try to copy Magritte and does NOT try to copy Dali. No, I am not personally acquainted with Mr. RIce, but I'd love to have a conversation that included him, you, myself, the video maker, and an Art Historian to explore these matters in depth.
@Ygdrasel Oh? You believe the entire world of art criticism (of which there are tens of thousands) has no validity? Sir, you and I will never agree on this point.
I believe critics are, for the most part, pretentious douchebags that judge things based on assumptions they have no legitimate support for. Such as what you're doing.
The sole difference between critics and everybody else is that critics are more pretentious with their opinions and they get paid. Reality bites, but that's how it is.
The look in his eyes... He's horrified of what he did and the pain he caused. You almost feel sorry for him, even though his infidelities caused his turmoil.

(it is kind of awkwardly blunt, isn't it...weird and uncomfortable -- just as are emotional affairs). i suppose showing a man's lack of integrity the way the song exhibits would be a bit too pornographic for the video medium. i think it succeeds in showing the starkness, desolation, sadness and pain when hearts stray, when committed relationship fail...

any ideas about the title?
why *9* crimes?
is there a list i'm missing?
or is it an allusion to another work?
rbccstmrtn 7 months ago
@rbccstmrtn I believe there is a reference between the 7 deadly sins in addition to the two people in the relationship, so 7 deadly sins + person 1 + person 2= 9 crimes. Just what I've heard.

great song, creepy ass video
kaiserman9 1 year ago
@kaiserman9 That stupid video ALMOST ruins the song. It's a sophomorish of the great painter Rene Magritte's surrealism. Thus it offends two artists (Damien and Rene) at the same time.
Zeppolino100 1 year ago
@Zeppolino100
Yeah, because Damien didn't have anything to do with his own music video...Your inability to interpret the work doesn't make it "sophomorish", sorry.
Ygdrasel 1 year ago
@Ygdrasel I've been a visual artist for forty years my friend, studying it seriously all those years and viewing it carefully in the great museums of this country. I know "sophomorish" work when I see it. How much do you know about Surrealism, and specifically Magritte?
Zeppolino100 1 year ago
@Zeppolino100 (continuing response to Ygdrasel) The video is TOO easy to interpret, part of what led to my first comment. It didn't matter whether Damien did or did not have anything to do with the video, as either way it falls way short of the depth of artistry in his music. Liking that video is akin to believing that fast food is dellicious gourmet fare.
Zeppolino100 1 year ago
@Zeppolino100
Ygdrasel 1 year ago
@Ygdrasel There IS no 'entire' point of art. Many books and discussions, etc., are devoted to the multitude of POINTS in it. I don't claim to have THE last word on it. I gave my opinions and it was you who jumped on my back. My negative response to the video is almost totally due to its visual STYLE. I'll be the first to admit that the video maker may have intended more content than I saw. The # of learned critics with similar views is what ultimately establishes quality in the arts.
Zeppolino100 1 year ago
@Zeppolino100
Doubtful.
Ygdrasel 1 year ago
@Ygdrasel When the discussion devolves to the point that you are using cartoons to advance your ideas, there is no point in continuing. You are welcomed to your beliefs, I to mine. I stand with those that believe quality exists and that it can be established through careful pereception and learned analysis. You don't believe in critics, you think all those that try to be artists get the benefit of the doubt and that originality isn't necessary. This ends the conversation. Best to you.
Zeppolino100 1 year ago
@Zeppolino100 Funny. You never hear about great critics. Only great artists. Now why is that? Because critics don't have the talent to create the art they are criticizing. Critics are fucking assholes who can't do that which they love themselves. Most critics are envious pricks who will NEVER create something as original as the art being discussed and will therefore never be REMEMBERED. So please, STFU!!!!

@vintonbonner Yeah, Roger Ebert won't ever be remembered.
RyanKaufman 6 months ago
@RyanKaufman Oh wow. ONE movie critic. Give me the name of a famous art critic, please. Like I said, you can think of five artists off the top of your head and Siskel and Ebert is all anyone can come up with? Movie critics! LAME LAME LAME
vintonbonner 5 months ago
@vintonbonner Movies take art. If you don't agree, perhaps you need to look in the mirror. No one remembers art critics because only a small portion of EVERYWHERE favors art. And normally the people who do are pretentious, so they have few friends that don't favor art to possibly be converted. Ebert and Siskel will be remembered because they reviewed one of the most popular forms of entertainment in America at least. That's all.
RyanKaufman 5 months ago
@RyanKaufman Very well said! Kudos to you for that! I agree that they are two critics etched in pop culture history, there's no argument about that. My only point was that I can't think of any "art" critics but I can immediately think of Picasso, Van Gogh, Alex Grey, Dali, Boris Vallejo. Poets, musicians, actors, filmmakers. I can think of so many different talented people from separate genres but I still can't think of any famous critics besides a movie critic.
vintonbonner 5 months ago
@vintonbonner I honestly can't remember any time I've heard an art critics... review I suppose of an art piece. I honestly cannot say I've ever heard anyone judge art. I've been to art museums, and I'm always looking around for cheap pieces that can go in various rooms of my home, never heard a single comment on anything I've seen though. Aside from the "This is nice" etc. Sad really, there should be a TV show about it. Maybe then art can branch out a little more.
RyanKaufman 5 months ago
@vintonbonner Dude! Without critics shit like Twilight would have won academy awards, even though some people don't agree with critics they are sometimes right about majority of the films, bu then again not all critics agree the same on everything, thats why we have our OWN opinions
ThatGuyGus 5 months ago
@ThatGuyGus I agree. Our opinions mean more than some douche bag that no one cares about enough to hear their opinion. Best thing is to look at it for yourself, no matter what genre.
vintonbonner 5 months ago
@vintonbonner So by your faulty logic, only someone who can actually create art can understand and appreciate it? So someone can't analyze and deconstruct something like Michelangelo's statue of David, for example, unless he or she can pick up a chisel and create it himself?
lexahb 5 months ago
@lexahb Faulty logic? I wasn't talking about someone who "appreciates" art. Criticizing and appreciating are two totally different things, but I guess that's just YOUR faulty logic, huh? And you're damn right, unless you have created something like that yourself, you can't rightfully criticize it. That's MY opinion. You've made my point. Anyone can appreciate art, but who has the right to constructively or non-constructively criticize? A fellow artist of course. A peer who truly knows the craft.
vintonbonner 5 months ago
lexahb 5 months ago
@lexahb Very good. Although I do recognize quite a few names, I can't say I'm sure what kind of art or genre they critique. But I am intrigued. I can see you got it off of an alphabetical list, so these names aren't from the top of your head. But I would still like to know what they all critiqued. Very fascinating though, lex.

lexahb 5 months ago
lexahb 5 months ago
@vintonbonner There are lousy critics and there are brilliant critics, just like in everything else. It's also absolutely false that you never hear about great critics. I can name several in different genres, but you probably wouldn't know who they are.

@Zeppolino100
Who gives a goddamn about Magritte? Did Rice personally tell you this video had anything to do with Magritte? No. Dali's work is better anyway.
Ygdrasel 1 year ago
@Ygdrasel The reason I brought up Magritte is because he was one of the first to used disembodied fragments of human forms in his work. The fact that you don't care about him, and that you prefer Dali is immaterial, because the maker of this video DOES try to copy Magritte and does NOT try to copy Dali. No, I am not personally acquainted with Mr. RIce, but I'd love to have a conversation that included him, you, myself, the video maker, and an Art Historian to explore these matters in depth.
Zeppolino100 1 year ago
@Zeppolino100
Do you know the video maker? No. So you've got exactly jack shit of a right to decide what he was doing.
Ygdrasel 1 year ago
@Ygdrasel Oh? You believe the entire world of art criticism (of which there are tens of thousands) has no validity? Sir, you and I will never agree on this point.
Zeppolino100 1 year ago
@Zeppolino100
I believe critics are, for the most part, pretentious douchebags that judge things based on assumptions they have no legitimate support for. Such as what you're doing.
Ygdrasel 1 year ago
@Ygdrasel I refuse to dialogue with someone crass enough to call legitimate and learned critics "douchebags."
Zeppolino100 1 year ago
@Zeppolino100
The sole difference between critics and everybody else is that critics are more pretentious with their opinions and they get paid. Reality bites, but that's how it is.
