Actually, I discovered that glitch (surface under the log, fall to the ground and be able to walk around as if there was no water at all) on pure chance when I was playing the PAL version of the game. It was the same copy that I got and played when I was a kid back in 2002 or 2003, so the glitch was definitely not removed from at least the first batch of games released in Europe.
