@mannclan100 It was released as Single round about the Time the Fincal Cut Album was released. It is the Starting Song of The Wall Movie. Maybe it was added later to a Final Cut CD as Bonus Track. The Wall mixes the childhood of Roger Waters with the LSD caused Drug-Psychosis of Sys Barett. The Political Things at Syds / Pinks DrugPsychosis Horror Trip can be seen as Midlife Crisis by the Pink Floyd Members: The former 1968 Underground Stars were under Attack by the 1977 Punk-Generation
for some reason this song makes me think about all the kids, barely young men of legal age to fight who had to really man up and show a lot of bravery following bullshit orders facing certain death, the good old english way
@ZuluCatsTheMispeller I know that Anzio had no connection with Normandy (D-Day) or Belgium (The Battle of the Bulge); I'm simply saying that the music--perhaps sans vocal track--and the movie would've complemented one another well.
@SenorSpode It still would've been off because the song say Anzio in it and King George and all that. Wouldn't fit with the Normandy/Germany/American stuff Plus you can't put a rock band in a miniseries like that they'd had to keep it classy I'm not saying this is bad or anything but you don't put rock in a series where only classical music should be played
Many famous public officers, celebrities and actors survived Anzio to tell it, led good lives and exemplified grit; James Arness was one such. A toast to all who fought at Anzio and a moment of remembrance for those who never came home from there.
It almost sounds like this song could go straight into Comfortably Numb, just by the way it ends, the tension it creates, and that Bring The Boys Back Home ends that way too.

Written in the style of a swelling British anthem. Waters has a keen ability to make you feel his music, in the same vein as John Williams. i have this song on 7" single with bring the boys back home on the b/side.the cover has the face off the wall on it and its called music from the film the wall, yet on the back it says taken from the album the final cut.and yet the final cut had not been written then.this song appeared on the film the wall but never made the album aswell as a longer version of in the flesh.they were replaced by hey you which didnt appear in the film.

I really really like this song, but I don't like how it is so personal with Waters. It makes me think of Water's attitude and feud/split with the band.

@atruamerican i can agree.. not going to lie im only 17 i did a 3 yr stint in the army cadets, and every year i did my rememberance day parade through my local area, i can say i have never been so proud to represent those who gave their lives to defend england and those who are still dying to defend what freedom the english have left
@Belgarath98 - According to the history I've read, it is Company Z. Companies W, X, Y, and Z were part of the 8th Battalion. Companies X and Y were wiped out on the first day (Feb 16th) of that part of the German attack. Companies A through D were part of the 9th Battalion, which did not see combat during that particular offensive.
@EyeHawk777 Waters originally intended to place this track on 'The Wall' album, however Gilmour objected as he thought it was too personal. During the making of the film, Waters had even more input to the tracklisting, and this song fitted perfectly.
thousands died in ww2, it doesn't matter what anyone says, but we'll be talking in German if it wasn't for those soldiers between them eric waters, who faught for the allies and gave their ultimate tribute for freedom
@GtForLife123 Yes they were the Tiger 1 tanks, the line was held only through superior artillery power from the Allies as Company Z was surrounded by the tanks and infantry.
@Ascerus It is Z, his father was in Z Company, 8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. X and Y company were wiped out in the first stages of the breakout and Z was the last line which held but some were taken prisoner. His father's body was never found.
@Ascerus Lots of places. Search for Eric Waters, and there are a few articles around that detail what happened and what is true in the song and what isn't. There is a good article about it on rogerwaters org. Just search "roger waters org eric" and click the "royalfusiliers1" link since it won't let me post the link
@Problemization jebala te srebrenica.... vise ste zla ucinili nama nego mi vama. svi su krivi sto su uvukli narod u rat! ali prestanite da nas blatite vise i time da sebe velicate! to je licemerno!
The first verse (up until Roger sings about King George sending the letter to Mrs.Waters) never really made sense to me. But when I studied WWII, I realized it was all fact. It's amazing how intent he is on the death of his father and The 8th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, Company C.
I absolutely hate the sentiment of this song - that a whiny kid can disparage his father's willing sacrifice and salvation of the free world from fascism - but man it is a well-written and performed song.
@brainiacgames what did he sacrifice for in the end though ? 400 thousand British solders died for the stalinisation of half of europe.
ww2 was triggered by Germany's invasion of Poland to reclaim the port city of Danzig (it was stripped from Germany at Versailles after ww1), a city which 90% of it's inhabitants wanted to be part of Germany, what happened to Poland after the war ? The soviets occupied it for 40 brutal years.
Germany could never have invaded the UK, they didn't have the Navy.
@HuxleyWasRight too many idiots know too much about the second world war, and are thus able to draw their own offensive, arrogant opinions from it. you seem to be making 3 unrelated points here.. the Stalinisation of Europe, the ethnic German majority in Dansig (which by the way, we call Gdańsk now) and the short comings of the Kriegsmarine.. what do these have to do with one another ??? why are you sharing all this world war 2 knowledge ? we're not thick - we Dont need the lesson.ENJOY THE SONG
@JeffBend the first two lines of my response are directed at the person i quoted, the rest is just some musings in general (hence the full stop and beginning of a new paragraph). YT comment sections aren't really the place to go in depth on any subject, not least WW2, so i just threw a few thoughts out there.
@HuxleyWasRight i thank you for your reply, which is well tempered and kind.. I'm still not sure about 400 British soldiers dying for the Stalinisation of half of Europe. It sort of sounds like Communism was the Goal of the whole thing... yet, it is a fair statement (as a philosophical, hind-sight based musing) Still, to concede your point, i guess the road to hell is paved with good intentions ..
@JeffBend It is true that we have the benefit of hindsight, but everyone talks about churchill as some sort of master tactician and great war leader, but if that's the case then how come he could not foresee what the consequences of declaring war on Germany, and allying with Stalin, would be ?.
For me, there's no real great leaders from that era, all of them were too willing to go to war, sure some were qualitatively more evil than the others, but non of them covered themselves in glory imo.
@whitediesel266 So are you insinuating that every wars motives have been a lie? In which case, drawing on this singular element, is tantamount to saying the Holocaust was a lie and never happened? C'mon you can't be that cynical surely man. And to make that comment on a Pink Floyd song, just is out of context. Now Rage Against The Machine I would understand it. Trying not to flame on this but it's mainly a curiosity than an irritation of intellect.

GtForLife123 6 months ago
@GtForLife123 Yes they were the Tiger 1 tanks, the line was held only through superior artillery power from the Allies as Company Z was surrounded by the tanks and infantry.

The final cut has got to be my second favorite after the wall. So much emotion and perfectly sums up an era. Waters is a genius

It's Company "z"............. damn good tune
jgraz42 6 months ago
@jgraz42 If it were Z then I think it would've been said as Zed.
Ascerus 6 months ago
@Ascerus It is Z, his father was in Z Company, 8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. X and Y company were wiped out in the first stages of the breakout and Z was the last line which held but some were taken prisoner. His father's body was never found.

@Decerto78 Where did you find that out?
In the Wall (Movie) with Roger Waters commemtary he does say C.
I've seen the film lots of times; Watched with commentary twice, and subtitles. It's C.
Ascerus 6 months ago
@Ascerus Lots of places. Search for Eric Waters, and there are a few articles around that detail what happened and what is true in the song and what isn't. There is a good article about it on rogerwaters org. Just search "roger waters org eric" and click the "royalfusiliers1" link since it won't let me post the link

The first verse (up until Roger sings about King George sending the letter to Mrs.Waters) never really made sense to me. But when I studied WWII, I realized it was all fact. It's amazing how intent he is on the death of his father and The 8th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, Company C.

I absolutely hate the sentiment of this song - that a whiny kid can disparage his father's willing sacrifice and salvation of the free world from fascism - but man it is a well-written and performed song.
brainiacgames 7 months ago
@brainiacgames what did he sacrifice for in the end though ? 400 thousand British solders died for the stalinisation of half of europe.
ww2 was triggered by Germany's invasion of Poland to reclaim the port city of Danzig (it was stripped from Germany at Versailles after ww1), a city which 90% of it's inhabitants wanted to be part of Germany, what happened to Poland after the war ? The soviets occupied it for 40 brutal years.
Germany could never have invaded the UK, they didn't have the Navy.
HuxleyWasRight 7 months ago

HuxleyWasRight 6 months ago
@HuxleyWasRight i thank you for your reply, which is well tempered and kind.. I'm still not sure about 400 British soldiers dying for the Stalinisation of half of Europe. It sort of sounds like Communism was the Goal of the whole thing... yet, it is a fair statement (as a philosophical, hind-sight based musing) Still, to concede your point, i guess the road to hell is paved with good intentions ..
JeffBend 6 months ago
@JeffBend It is true that we have the benefit of hindsight, but everyone talks about churchill as some sort of master tactician and great war leader, but if that's the case then how come he could not foresee what the consequences of declaring war on Germany, and allying with Stalin, would be ?.
For me, there's no real great leaders from that era, all of them were too willing to go to war, sure some were qualitatively more evil than the others, but non of them covered themselves in glory imo.

@brainiacgames open your eyes ffs every war has been a lie
whitediesel266 6 months ago
@whitediesel266 So are you insinuating that every wars motives have been a lie? In which case, drawing on this singular element, is tantamount to saying the Holocaust was a lie and never happened? C'mon you can't be that cynical surely man. And to make that comment on a Pink Floyd song, just is out of context. Now Rage Against The Machine I would understand it. Trying not to flame on this but it's mainly a curiosity than an irritation of intellect.
