Genious!!! Perfect for beginners this really clarified wat i was doing with my synthesizers i mean i was twisting nobs and hoping it would sound good but now i fully understand wat some of those little nobs do
Great video, clear and interesting. I am new to both synthesis and the Gaia but am learning hard and all this made sense and cemented my knowledge, as well as clarifying certain things for me - e.g. changing the speed at which the LFO enters. Thanks !
4:35 what's wrong with our trumpet now? lol i learned so much about syntheses from an acoustic sound! Amazing explanation by the way. thank you for this vid
@BabyGrandOz BRILLIANT VIDEO My pal from down under! My Gaia is on its way so im preparing as much as possible. Any chance you could put a vid up on how to get basic sounds ala Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno to start?
QUESTION: can you play a pad sound in conjunction with the arpeggiator or will i have to multi-track? Can I use the phrase recorder to make an arpeggio then play on top of it?
@BabyGrandOz LOVE ur vid, ive been a zazz guitarist for 20 years and finally bought this synth. BTW anyone who thiks they can tell how good a synth is via a youtube vid is an idiot.
I'm no synth expert (FAR from it), but it seems to me that the fourth property of sound has been neglected: TIMBRE, which would correspond to the oscillator waveform. That's not trivial. Sine waves sound quite different from square waves, and that difference is crucial to sound design, whether or not you're trying to emulate organic instruments or not. But for all that, any effort to educate people is to be appreciated.
all you really need to know is Low Frequency Oscillators, Filters, Envelopes, and Voltage Controlled Oscillators :D look that stuff up and you should be good to go
cool video, should really help a bunch of folks, its not a analog synth obviously but come on folks he is still explaining the basics of forming the sounds you want to make. even with a true analog synth this stuff applies. o yeah and this synth imo is a good synth for the price,
Why don't you show us what this synth really can do, rather than pissing about with an instrument that most people would record from a real fuckin trumpet, and not fuck about with a great analogue synthesis engine, get modern!!!!!!!!!!
Well i enjoyed this very much, you built up that trumpet sound very well and explained step by step what it needs and how to add the elements. That was clear laid and very informing. You are very good, it 'd be nice to see you go through a minimoog and build sounds from scratch. I am sure you would do it better than all thiese alledge pro. Thanks for this great video
lol funny its calles basics of analog synth cuz its a digital synth but it is setup the similairily haha im planning on getting this as my first synth this xmas to use along with my Yahmaha ypg635
I think the GAIA would be many times easier to program than the microKORG, which I've also considered. Except that the GAIA has (yay!) many, many more control knobs :D.
This is the best video I've ever seen for the basics of analog synthesis. I've forwarded it to my friend so he can learn. Unfortunately, it took me years of learning on my own before I finally understood. If only this video was around when I was starting out.
Subtractive synthesis? Well not really. Perhaps I should have said "how to study basic analog synthesis using a digital program that simulates the functions of an analog synthesizer". To make a long story short .... too late ;-)
@BabyGrandOz lol. well.. the "tone" section is a filter obviously and you are using it to "subtract" frequencies from the oscillator which is basically "subtractive synthesis".

awesome thanks. I like how you use layman terms then layer in the technical terminology. Good techniques.

Thank you sooooooo much for this video, but one minor correction: it's actually not "Amp" for "Amplifier", but it really is "Amp" for "Amplitude".
CriticsConfession 10 months ago
@CriticsConfession Of cousre it's amplifier you fool - OSCILLATOR ---------> FILTER ---------> AMPLIFIER
An Amplifier is used to control the loudness of the sound over a period of time so as to emulate a natural instrument.

Thank you Adrian this helps me a lot understanding synths
You really have to think of how machine creating a sound from a basic bleep.
How do you know all of this? Are you a musican?

Does this synth sound as good as an Analog synth like the sh-101? I'm looking to buy something like this, just concerned that VA is garbage...

@LIGHTRONIX The GAIA is a very good synth, and comes pretty close to analogue sound, at least when I compare it directly to my vintage Juno 6. I

analog synthesis? don't you mean subtractive synthesis? there's nothing analog about that synth... except the analog outputs.
