I'm surprised that among all these excellent observations I haven't seen any mention of the dynamite bass track, which was played by Donald "Duck" Dunn from Booker T and the MGs as well as The Blues Brothers and several tours with Eric Clapton. I'm pretty sure it was his only guest appearance on any Tom Petty recording and he did not disappoint.

Amen, Brother. One of my favorites from an astoundingly good discography. Petty & The Heartbreakers newly-released 4-CD Live Anthology is pretty wonderful, by the way. I do want to snag that fifth disc that is only sold at Best Buy, but that combined set is a hundred bucks. Petty's worth it though........

You sound like you know your stuff on Tom Petty. He was one of my favorite bands when I was your age. I went to many concerts back then but never got to see him. All my friends would talk about how awesome the concert was, he always sounded good live. This song would always make me think of a girl I liked all through school, we were good friends but she was in love with an older guy that was out of school. I wanted her to know how I felt about her, but she was in love.
